Very exciting news, just thought I’d share.

I was a computer engineering student before I left school to have my first child (and then second, third, and fourth).

I stayed at home for five years, out of necessity, not by choice, and struggled to get back into tech.

I eventually stared freelancing Wordpress sites, because in a small town, I didn’t have any other opportunities.

When not doing that, I took online classes and did side projects, mostly in Javascript.

This summer I got an internship at Mozilla through GNOME Outreachy doing python work.

It’s completely unreal to me...but I have been offered a contract-to-hire position with Mozilla.

After years of feeling like I would never succeed, I have my first real programming job.

Ridiculously awesome benefits and pay...

Holy fucking hell.

Me: so, ifconfig, what is my gateway?

ifconfig: [ip address]

Me: nmap, what is this IP address?

nmap: it's a network switch with an open telnet port.

Me: what happens if I connect to it?

switch: WHAT IS THE PASSWORD?!?!

Me: is it blank?

switch: correct. what do you want to do?

Me: can I look at all the IP and MAC addresses on the network?

switch: WHAT IS THE ADMIN PASSWORD?!?!

Me: is it... admin?

switch: correct. Here's everyone that's connected to the network: [400+ IPs and MACs]

Me: ok python, would you filter through these and tell me what manufacturer each one belongs to?

python: sure.
[~50 manufacturer lookups later]
python: there's a bunch of apple product, a bunch of miscellaneous laptop and printer manufacturers, and some raspberry pis.

Me: raspberry pis?

python: yep. about 20 of them.

Me: What happens if I connect to one?

rpi: WHAT IS THE PASSWORD?!?!

Me: raspberry?

rpi: correct. what do you want to do?

Me: can I make you do my bidding in the background when you aren't being used?

rpi: sure, sounds fine.

I love ignorant sysadmins.

JavaScript is like Voldemort. It can do great things. Terrible things! But great!

Customer :Can you build a system that rates our product by XYZ standard?
Us: Sure!

*time passes*

Us: Ta-da!
Customer: Okay, here are some good and some bad products!

*products get rated shit to supershit*

Customer: No, that's wrong. Some of these are as good as we can, they should be rated best!
Us: okay, we offset the results.

*products get rated good to barely okay*

Customer: Great! Can you sign that the system rates by XYZ Standard?
Us: No.
Customer : But we paid you to rate by XYZ standard!
Us: By XYZ standard your products are bad, you can either have your products rated by standard or pass the test.
Customer: Unacceptable!
Us: Improve production?
Customer : Not possible, the job is done when you rate the products good by XYZ standard.

It's here 😀 Now I can resume testing my projects peacefully on real device instead of that crashing Android emulator. I still miss my Nexus 6P.

I thought I was never going to be anything in life because there was nothing that I was good at. Then I started "web school" and it just clicked. I was good at it and I understood it. Finished with an A :) now I love my job as a front-end developer.
