Simply curious, what does a sysadmin do? It simply seems to be one of the most popular roles on devRant.
I searched it up, but I still don't understand what they do. They don't seem that much different from programmers or web developers :/ -
@Michelle eh no, usually a SysAdmin in particular are the ones keeping the servers up, physically, in the datacenter and that the stuff runing on that server is properly managed and such or tweaking with the firewall as need sometimes too, you can do it online too though, I used to work as one when the other one was at home sleeping I was at night dealing with clients from the other side world and such

@Michelle
Sysadmin isn't one role. There are many subtypes just as there are subtypes of developers. The thing in common- we all manage systems just as all developers write a form of code. If you never met a sysadmin that's probably becaude you work in a small company. They exist in organizations thta have lots of servers and systems
Here is a list of roles, in some companies and organizations they may be mixed or separated:
Microsoft/Windows sysadmins- manage domains, domain controller servers, exchange mail servers, SCCM, Active directory, IIS and MSSQL servers.
Unix/Linux sysadmins- manage unix and Linux servers and services. Usually command line and scripter wizards.
Storage/Virtualization sysadmins- manage physical and virtual storage, virtual machines, server rooms, backups, DR.
Security sysadmin(my current job) - manage security systems(Firewalls, Antivirus, security incident monitoring systems, forensics, hardening, WAF, NAC, permissions, ecryptions and certificate PKI. -
@Chlodovechus Here is the MVP of the thread perhaps condensing most of what you need to know @Michelle

@Chlodovechus
Ohh, I understand a lot more.
Also, I'm 16, so I don't work in a company haha. I was simply curious in case it's a career I want.
Thanks so much! I understand a lot clearer now, and I just realized how much of a stupid question I asked :) -
@Michelle dont say that your question is stupid, it was a legit good question and is way worse to silence a doubt than to search for the answer

740027567y@legionfrontier “Keeping servers up physically” sounds like servers had a tendency to fall over and you have to underpin them all the time.
