@Lensflare in Canada you can work for yourself without getting the government involved. Until 40k of revenue in the last 4 quarters, then you need to start collecting sales tax.

If something like that was available in the U.S (which is not) and it was hard to get because there had to be a fee + and exam to take for proficiency it would sure as shit cut down a lot of annoying competition. -

Mandatory licence for business transactions is tied to minimum standards for people not to fuck up the lot.

You don't need that licence before freelancing, just within a year of doing business.
Nor does it come with restrictions. It's designed to keep off scammers, rogue traders and crooks.
And if you attempt to fake your balances, that's it. Yo' out.
