80

I'm a lawyer, like a year ago I was home alone (wife and kid went on the trip) and from boringness, I decided that I should learn to program (was thinking about that earlier because of some ideas for apps I had - I was fucking naive then :P).

So I start googling best way to do it and I decided to start CS50 course on edx. And that was a real blast for. Best learning experience ever happened in my life.

Anyway, I was going through CS50 curriculum (at the start I thought I will quit it after few weeks) and every day was like so exciting. This whole programming thing seems like the best thing happens to me in many years. There were so many interesting things to learn, I felt like I discovered whole new word.

So after few months while I was finishing CS50, one day I decided, fuck it, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life (I'm 35+ btw ;)). I chose frontend path as it seems easier for a person without technical education. If everything goes as planned I will start looking for a job at beginning of next year. So where I the rant you could ask?

Well, you should guest what my family thinks about it. My wife was like at first: I'm proud you learning something new, now she hates it, making fights about me always sitting in front of computer (which is not true as I learn most in work in my spare time - I can do it as I work on my own), she even told my parents that I cheat her because she started family with a lawyer, not a programmer (supposed to be joke, but really not fun for me) . WTF - where is the fucking support ? ehhh. My parents on the other side still don't believe I will do it (after more than a year of my learning) and they still think I will quit the idea in the end....

So thats it my rant about what my familly thinks about me become programmer.

(sry for my English)

Welcome! And finally a developer who will care for terms and conditions :D

If you convey how important it is to you and if you can show her that your quality of living won't change (or even get better), I'm sure she'll come around. Depending on the job, you'll probably even get to spend more time with your wife and kid(s). If it doesn't work out, you can always go back to a law career. 😉

    Welcome!

Wish you all the best for your new career path.

At 28, I left my architecture related job for web designer, and next 2 years, I've became back-end dev. Good life. No regret!

    $92,233 vs $24,049
Average lawyer income vs average programmer income in Poland. (Google search, I may be wrong)

Anyway hats off dude. You have balls of steel or gold. 🍀🍀🍀

@CurseMeSlowly I suppose the area makes a big difference. I'm in the Silicon Valley and 90K is about right.

It's a nice decision to take there, because I believe u have already calculated all the risk. Who knows u can use technology to solve problems in ur dicipline ✊

I'd say Tha though should keep doing whatever makes you happy.

As a song says "Never again will I spend all the precious time that I have left on those who oppose anyone doing what they love"

Yeah, it's hard to keep up because you have a family, but your wife is being kinda rude. All I can say is that I hope for the best of you, and welcome to the wonderful world of the devs

I'm supporting you mate! You made a great decision. A tough and a bold one. It takes balls to do that and for that you have my gratitude.

While you're really not that old, I still have to mention that "never too late" moto.

Also maybe keep building websites as a part time job / hobby for a year. This is to expand your portfolio, gain experience and still to be able to work the current job.

    PS. I've also done the Harvard's CS50 :)
Though I already had the knowledge :D

    @ignuit

From my life experience i can advise you to chose a profession you are passionate with, if you not sure at this moment of your life try both, just dont wait too long and if your really dont like law or medicine or whatever your studies quit it and do what your heart tell you is good for you :)
