What linux distro should I choose to be my primary OS?

Alright, not much to go on, but since you're a programmer, then OpenSUSE is tailored towards developers.

Personally, I would go for something like Manjaro for my primary Linux OS because of the way they handle updates.

Ubuntu is widely supported and since they dropped unity its become better (no hassle changing it yourself)

@linuxxx even you should know there is no "best" to this question, like all others, asking what someone should use is invalid, most of the time they give 0 information about their hardware, what they need if for etc and expect us to make an educated guess.

My experience with Linux is: If you want to get stuff done and want an OS that works, go with Linux Mint or Fedora or one of those, but if you want something that gives you headaches every once in a while and that you have to nurture and care for go for something like Arch or Gentoo.

I like Linux Mint, everything works out of the box (most of the time) and I can get straight to work... Though I periodically install arch because I forget how much of a pain it is.

If you hate yourself and have lots of time then install gentoo. Well my current choice of Linux would be elementary though. It looks nice and is Ubuntu based (but sadly not the latest one)

@theuser I have my PC dual booted with kali linux as the other OS beside windows yet I don't view it as a good primary OS

@HRT-713 yeah, kali is cool and all, but it's not a very clever choice to use as a dual-boot, it's better to keep it on a usb stick as an extra if you actually need it.
Since kali is debian-based, you could go with ubuntu or debian, and install the pentesting tools you want on top of those - that would be a much better choice (and the packages are the same, so you should not have any significant issues)

Seriously, whichever one you want. Having said that you could check youtube for comparison videos on the different versions to get a feel for them instead of having to install test all of them yourself first. Might save a bit of time and I learned a bit watching some videos.

Anyways, I'd say take a look at Mint!

I'd suggest for a daily use linux mint, like ubuntu is widely supported and if you don't like the default desktop environment you can always change it (also apt-get)

@linuxxx exactly, but now this is beginning to be a moot point imho. No one can tell another user what's best for them, it's all just trial and error. Hopefully the OP is able to find something that suits them :)

@ScribeOfGoD In my country, internet is really slow, so I need about a day to download one linux distro if the download doesn't fail because of the electricity going out, so what I mean to say is I don't have time for trial and error.@linuxxx

@HRT-713 well wine should support it. Oh and I've seen you have power problems. Try to use torrent downloads for the ISO that way you recheck and continue the file if the power goes away.
