Bought Logitech gaming mouse. They are doing everything they can to try and get you to get an account. However, it is not yet required. I stopped using Razer devices because of them requiring an account. I hope Logitech doesn't end up there. It seems like every company is going to shit. So for now Logitech isn't a bunch of shits. If they had required an account I would return the gaming mouse. I don't need that noise.

What I really want though is a framework that works with all vendors for added functionality. An extended feature framework.

What does the extended features for gaming mice and keyboards look like under Linux?

    Enshittification continues.
    Logitech has already been contaminated, they were playing with the idea of a mouse subscription. The MBA cancer is in and it will not leave.

    define what framework you would need ?

    A mouse just needs to push buttons and do stuff. And if you need special thinks, use x-mouse button control or something like that. No account, no tracking, nothing...

    razor doesnt need account? On Linux there are many open source programs to customize razor keyboards such as the rgb animations.

    This bullshit is everywhere now. Even my washing machine requires me to create an account to make some custom configurations or to receive push notifications.
    🙄

    Just create temporary email using temporary email service. Fixed in less than a minute

    @Lensflare I can imagine not to use temporary email for a washing machine tho :p Where do you have to enter credentials?

    @retoor are u sure its not a key logger to feed the ai

    @Lensflare LOL. Get a Miele

    On Linux as far as I know it is centralised on a library called ratbag that has definitions for each model/brand and it has a nice frontend called piper. With my logitech mouse I only miss the g-shift feature support but all other settings, even lighting, seem to be there.

    @Grumm the macros and lighting settings. I have to add vendor specific software to get say keyboard macro sequences for specific games.

    @retoor it‘s coupled with an app and the app requires an account. I haven‘t tried fake emails because I don‘t care enough to try.

    > "Bought Logitech gaming mouse."

    Which one?
  • 2
    @Lensflare ofcourse, an app. I fantasized about some old school find my washing machine app only working on windows

    I mean, it's almost always a shit move.

    But in my particular case, the AC I got installed yesterday comes with an app that allows me to control it from anywhere. It's cool to go out and be able to turn it on 15 mins before arriving home and have it be warm and comfortable.

    @CoreFusionX yeah, the features for an account is that it gets saved in cloud. Might be other benefits.

    @PaperTrail

    G203

    and I have another arriving on weekend

    G502

    I think I had a G502 in the past, but the switches wore out fast so I returned it. So I bought two in case one dies.

    @Demolishun > "G502"

    Nice.

    My G602 switches wore out after many years of faithful service. I think I paid around $30 back then, I can't think about paying close to $100 for a mouse now. Been watching the sales and refurb market for a < $50 (wireless) G502. Dealing with my $10 backup TechNet "gaming mouse" in the mean time.
  • 3
    @PaperTrail the G502 was like $44

    https://amazon.com/Logitech-G502-Pe...

    Edit: Oh you want wireless. I go wired. I don't want to deal with wireless.
  • 1
    @Demolishun a wireless mouse lasts almost a year
  • 3
    @retoor wired is also half the cost.
  • 2
    @Demolishun I‘m old school as well. Everything wired unless it really, really needs to be wireless.
    Even my wifi is wired.

    @CoreFusionX leaving it on at a constant temperature for the whole day may use less energy, but ymmv

    @electrineer

    I don't really use it the whole day, only for the night, which is when it gets real cold.

    So it's cool if I go out to the bar, and just before coming home I turn it on and then leave it until sunrise.

    everything as a service and you will own nothing and be happy

    remember, it's not capitalism because the government is complicit (and also one world government people is who want you to own nothing and be happy but anyway)

    @feuerherz the razer open source people reverse engineered the Razer software though

    I wanted to do a little RGB keyboard software in rust for my razer laptop (primarily cuz all the existing are python and ew) but uhhh

    Jesus fuck everything is a mess. all those open source packages, nobody knows what they're doing. it's spaghetti. razer doesn't tell you what signals do what. so people just like guessed them and there's no documentation and everybody is confused

    and what the fuck is a dbus. why is there separate driver software ? huh? TF is a driver anyway. to be fair part of my issue may be me not actually taking an autistic how-linux-works course. if anyone has one of those I would watch it

    someone talked me into buying rgb Bluetooth lightbulbs

    turns out I can't connect to them without a pin and the pin is provided by the app. the app also keeps asking for GPS and won't work without it and keeps saying they don't use that data for anything else. gay

    also I wanted to programmatically change the colors. I don't want a stupid app. let me send signals to this thing from scripts. lame and lame and laaaame

    @jestdotty yeah, I hate this new world of walled gardens.
  • 2
    @jestdotty ohh okay. Yea my next keyboard wont be razer aswell. Though i think my current will hold many years. Anywho, it be cool to put some custom color animations there from code!

    The G203 has like 8Kdps or some shit. I set its dps setting for default to 1650. It feels so nice just to scroll around the screen. I think I had my old mouse set to slow.

    @Demolishun The lights I can understand. But AutoHotKey does also the trick on any keyboard. (But maybe blacklisted as cheats in games ?)

    @Grumm I don't know.
