I've never seen competent coders on twitter
the new Boston taught me java way back when and that was about it -
retoor10472dI wanted to bash you for being positive about CDN, but then I saw VPS comment. Yes, it's better to host it yourself. It costs nothing. Serverless is terrible, it actually means a LOT of servers and on top of that, that scaling, you still have to write code for that yourself. It only scales in amount of workers. Yh, since when was that ever hard?
You align with me in opinion. With the ease of backup I would even prefer VPS above dedicated server (depends a bit on pricing / performance of course) but there are enough VPS power servers.
But that whole amazon shit. I prefer digital ocean VPS'es and stuff. When people rant here about amazon, it's always something unexpected that has been billed. I also saw someone who made a button click app (whatever that is) and asked donations because the click costed money for request. Imagine imagine imagine. I've build cloud systems for three years and do everything myself. Knowledge, a devops at least, should have. Amazon is for stupids. -
@retoor
agreed. Nowadays, I exclusively host everything on DigitalOcean. It works so well.
AWS is for masochists.
What's your quarrel with CDNs?
I think in the right circumstances, they make sense. For example, with video delivery, on-the-fly image transformation... -
retoor10471d@null-pointer-ex cdn's cost money for a service you very simple host on yourself. Yeah, maybe if you do mass like video that some other provider could be cheaper? Big video hosting is maybe hard to do yourself indeed. No experience with.
(BTW, did you know the perfect video encoding doesn't exist? Netflix has a different one per episode, episodes with many quick flashes like transformers use other encoding than slow stuff 'friends' for example). -
retoor10471d@null-pointer-ex Digital Ocean I've meant as example tbh (but my friends use it). I personally use TransIP what is ONE of the best dutch vps hosters. The hoster where I worked myself had actually faster vps'ers. I noticed, because I hosted on both a Daas (Desktop as a service).
VPS servers make a lot of money because they sell many times the resources that it actually has and most of times that's ok, like the bank not having all our money. But i'm sure you know this already. But that's at least ok / ethical. Serverless, WTF WTF :P How could we even accept that name? I have also some comments about decentralized tech, a lot to say about that. -
@retoor yeah, video streaming is still not a solved problem.
Yeah, I only use CDNs for video streaming or heavy file delivery. Helps speed things up a ton. Especially when it supports resumable uploads/downloads. -
cprn177823h1st of all, there never used to be a decent *anything* coders community. “Those who cannot write, teach” includes code.
98% of those people just started and write about stuff they don't understand, because they're excited and think it's magic. As soon as they understand a single concept, they think they should teach it to the whole internet, because their way of thinking is *so unique* and deserves praising.
The remaining 2% are either mids, or failures. Even when you watch someone highly regarded, like Cherno or Primeagen, who worked on complicated subjects for big companies, you realize their own code is full of bias and not that good. Better than most, but not breathtaking. Why? Because they went through the hump, declined, burned out, and only then started talking about writing. As soon as they got their mojo back, you don't see them teaching ever again.
Decent is a level, that cannot be taught. -
jestdotty570618h@cprn game reverse engineering and game hacking forums had really smart people and were my first exposure
so it's all downhill from there -
i always thought twitter was that place to follow porn stars. Why would u talk about serious shit there?

There needs to be some sort of enforcement about who can write code. JK,
but seriously, the current dev wannabes and influencers on sh-t-witter and linkedin are literal cancer.
A dude will make a post about how to "scale" a system, yet they have no grasp of the most basic fundamentals. They have no idea what a CDN is, they think you can just store blobs and be done with it. Like, bro, are you going to be serving a 10MB image from the DB every single time it's requested? How WILL that scale? How will low bandwith users be served? Oh, yeah right, I forgot that everyone in the world has 1Gbps internet from NASA.
They think serverless will take care of it.
BUT HOW? No wonder "serverless" companies like Vercel are making bank out of idiots who can't manage to spin up a decent VPS that would take care of 99% of usecases.
Granted, most copy paste regurgitated AI slop from chatgpt but still.
It's so infuriating. There used to be a decent Twitter dev community, but not it's just AI shills, crypto bros and script kiddies all pretending to write code.
It's time I stopped using that site.
Also probably a sign I should quit this industry. Getting tired of it to be honest.
Don't see myself still writing code in 3 years.
