Today I realized an interesting thing about social media I use:
Twitter: using since 20.06.2016, likes from J.Dorsey: 0
Facebook: using since 21.11.2010, likes from M.Zuckerberg: 0
Vk.com: using since 24.10.2008, likes from P.Durov: 0
devRant: using since last Sunday, likes from @dfox : 1
Didn't notice this initially because I'm new to devRant, but today I decided to visit the About page. Then I looked at my notifications. Then once again the About page. *a lightbulb appears* xD19 -
First off I dont mind what OS you are using. This rant isnt about the OS but about hypocrisy for some of the users. Secondly Im sorry for typos, I typed it on my phone while waking up.
People are calling Windows spyware, so they are using Linux or MacOS. Even though I disagree with the term spyware I would be fine with that if you weren't a hypocrite.
How many of the people who use Linux and call windows spyware uses Google, Apple, Facebook or Twitter once in a while? I highly doubt you if you say you don't.
A few years back Ive tried to live without anything of google, this also meant blocking YouTube, their trackers an javascript libraries.
Not much of the internet still works if you block google servers.
Google is everywhere and always collects data.
Facebook and twitter also collects data about you. Everyone who has your number in their phone will share it with Whatsapp and google so they can build up a profile. Even if you dont block it.
What I am telling you is that its impossible to avoid being tracked by these companies (including MS).
Every company I mentioned here has a profile on you, if you want it or not.
So let's check which of these companies tries to follow European laws.
Google gets fine after fine but doesnt really try to avoid it.
It looks like Apple, MS, Facebook and Twitter are doing it better on this.
But if you check the European law every European citizen is allowed to request their complete profile collected by a company. And that means complete and not the public part you volunteered to give away.
So I tried it out.
Google didnt want to give it, apple didnt want to give it, Facebook didnt want to give it and Twitter doesnt want to give it.
The hypocrisy is becoming clesr with the following. I did get my complete profile from MS. It was a messy PDF file which crashed most PDF readers.
It contained a list of people I know and how I know them. It contained MS accounts I had in the past and my hobbies. (and quite a lot more)
So from these big companies MS is the only one following the European Law.
So yes they do collect data, but they are open in what they collect.
And Im not saying here that Microsoft is great just because they follow the law.
You can have your own opinion about this and do with it what you want. I just wanted to share some, maybe alternative, facts.
And again this isn't an OS rant or whatever. I dont mind what you do, but I do mind hypocrisy.18 -

Just found this gem on Twitters API...
When your app gets too excited they return status code 420 to tell you to chill! 😂😂😂
Fyi : For the non web-devs out there 420 is an invalid http code.5 -
So Twitter apparently used http status code "420 - Enhance your calm" to notify the client that it was sending too many requests (basically chill the **** out). Note the status code number as well 😁

If the time comes when the traditional signing in with email dies out, I don't know how long I'm gonna last to the Internet anymore. I never liked the idea of having my accounts associated with these giants especially with Facebook.14
-
devRant is truly amazing, a social network where I don't have to give up on privacy by giving out my number to confirm that I am legit when I'd use something as a VPN to protect my identity (unlike twitter facebook and google)
Thanks for giving a fuck about privacy and not giving a fuck about my data11 -
Person- Hey! are you a game developer?

So... Some fake accounts on Twitter claimed to be Elon Musk and to give shitloads of Bitcoin to those who sent a little amount first. They stole... Wait for it... 180 grand.
That's basically your everyday 419 scam. Existing since before the internet, done with the names of Gates, Buffet, Bush, Obama...
They say "the big bad evil criminals and the poor little innocent victims" I say natural selection. Sorry, in those lion vs gazelle scenarios I always thought that it was fair, no matter how it went.
Just when did humanity get so brainless? Have we always been, is the internet just a catalyst for stupidity?
Just why the fuck must I be an infosec sheepdog instead of a wolf? Man, I could live the life, drink beer and smoke herb while working... Get up at 12, don't give a shit, no boss, no taxes, no social security payments that I don't see jack shit from, and the pay would be better to.
Damn.13 -
Reminder:
Change twitter passwd NOW and everywhere where you used that passwd.
Twitter somehow stored unencrypted passwd in logs. While they were probably never accessed by anyone its still better to change it right away.4 -
Never posted on 9Gag, never twittered and almost never posted on Facebook, because I thought it is unnecessary and not interesting. But man, ranting here feels so good with every ++ I get 😁

I've had a Twitter bot running for just over a year now. It's going to gain it's 6000th Follower at some point today.
I find it odd that an automated account I made has more Followers than all of my human accounts across all social networks combined - a lot more. I like to wonder about my bot Followers, how many of them are bots? How many of them are real and feel an actual connection with "me" and look forward to my Tweets, blissfully unaware that it's a bot?16 -
Some 'ethical hacker' living in my country scanned all domains of attachments in tweets of Donald Trump. He found out that one was expired and bought it for 10$. He then placed a arguingly funny movie at the exact location. Quite funny.

This Twitter Bot will make you addicted to Books.
That is the title I came up for this post.
Anyway I just wrote a new Twitter Bot that when tweeted the name of the book that you last read, it will reply back with a related book suggestion.
Feel free to take it for a spin and share your interesting finds. I know you will try to break it :)12 -

I finally gave in into the peer pressure and made myself a Twitter account.
WHAT A FUCKING SHIT SITE.
When registering the only thing I provided was my email and username. Nothing more.
One day later when visiting Twitter I get a big ass pop-up that briefly tells me my account is locked for 'unusual behavior', 'suspicious activity' and 'not following of Twitter's rules'.
I want to remind you that my account was barely one day old, and had no activity whatsoever.
So if getting your account locked for no single reason isn't bad enough. The only and ONLY way to unlock my account was TO PROVIDE MY FUCKING PHONE NUMBER. No other single way to unlock my account.
YOU WANT MY PERSONAL DATA SO BADLY?
On top of that I didn't receive a single email from them for this 'suspicious activity' or 'breaking of Twitter's rules'.
THIS IS SCAREWARE. Lying to people in order to get more personal data. My account was perfectly fine. And without providing your phone number you can't even delete your account.

So I had this conversation with my dad
Background : He saw news about some celebrity's Twitter account got hacked.
Dad : Do you know how to hack a Twitter account?
Me : No dad. There are ways for people who do this kind of stuff.
D : But, you studied software engineering!
M : Yeah, but I don't do hacking.
D : Although hacking is not ethical but everyone should know about their field.
*Awkwardly left the room*
Just because I studied computer science doesn't mean that I SHOULD know hacking.
And this is not the first conversation of this kind!4 -

I posted a long-winded Twitter thread describing the experience I have in software development and advertising that I’m looking for a job. It felt awkward as hell to do, but yolo. I’ve had a few people reach out as a result; here’s hoping something works out. Hilariously, absolutely forgot to talk about databases. 😅

When not logged in, twitter.com opens a welcome message and a login form. twitter.com/login opens a login page with a "remember me" check box so you can stay logged in.
Twitter don't seem to want visitors to their homepage to come back very easily.1 -

A burden has been lifted off of me. The burden of social media. I hate it with every ounce of my soul(except twitter and devRant). The amount of time wasted it is unreal. Deleted my instagram last night and my snapchat this morning. It feels so good!!!!! Sure my classmates think I'm crazy but it is worth it. No negativity more time to focus, work and game. I think it is a huge win.6

Welp, they invaded my workspace again...
This time the GitHub Maid title went to my Twitter :/
(tbh I'm getting used to it already lol) -
I hate Twitter so much right now! I was trying to embed a timeline into my new website and it kept only showing me a link. I thought that my server config was messed up and re did everything from scratch. It turn out that when you use the Twitter embed tool, it doesn't add "https:" in front of the link to the js file. There is a week of work wasted because of a broken link.1
-
I. hate. Twitter. So. Much.
Well I don't hate Twitter as whole, but their "Contact Us" page is just plain fucking awful.
So, in my country the required age to give consent on my own to collect data is 16. I was 15 at the time when the fucking shithole of a law that is GDPR rolled around, so Twitter locked my account due to me having 15 years. Fair enough.
Couple months passed and now I'm 16. So my account should be unlocked now right? Nope. Still locked. So ok, maybe they don't have a system that auto-unlocks accounts. So I click the "Get started" button. That brings me to a form where I should fill our my parents email. But there is also an option to click a link if you think your account was locked by a mistake. So I click that. Now it should bring me to another form where I tell Twitter why they should unlock my account. BUT THE COCKSUCKER THAT DESIGNED THE FUCKHOLE OF A NAVIGATION FORGOT TO GIVE ACCESS TO ACCOUNTS THAT ARE LOCKED BY GDPR. SO IT REDIRECTS ME BACK TO THE "PICK YOUR FORM" PAGE WHERE ALL THE FORMS BUT THE "GIVE US EMAIL OF YOUR PARENTS" ARE FUCKING LOCKED TO ME!
So now I'm stuck in the endless fuckhole that is the Twitter "Contact Us" page.
btw my first rant...7 -
For the people that missed my comment at the bottom of my last rant, I have gotten the Twitter account set up for my locker door Twitter project.

Long long time ago when recharge coupons we a thing, I used to try out more codes in the series and waste my time. After failing a lot over this, I started trying out different USSD codes to see what other stuff is out there. This got me to stumble upon facebook and twitter on USSD. I'm not sure now but, twitter was probably *515# from my carrier.
Facebook. I remember chatting for quite a long period using this. Very slow and limited yet, fun. The USSD message expires within ~60secs. so you have to type the chat message before that or you lose everything you typed. The phone was no smartphone that would allow me to copy the text from the USSD input. On top of that panic, was a character limit to these messages. I remember hitting send while being midway through a message just so I don't lose what I typed, on a T-9 keyboard. Still miss those!
The person on the other side would receive a half message due to this, and would start replying without any patience, to which I panicked as now there's a new thing to respond to, and a half message which I'm waiting to complete.
Later over the weekend when I was allowed to visit the cyber cafe for an hour or two with 15-30 INR, reading the chat threads, being able to use the five sticker packs:) and thus continuing on a computer was fun. But, as the time at the cafe expires, I had to immediately shut off my session or I'd be charged more. Thus, I was left in the middle of a conversation again, and had to continue over USSD.
Using social media without any internet like this was quite fun in a weird way. If I get a new message, I'd get a USSD alert, and then an sms if I didn't reply in some 10-15mins!
This had all the features like like and comment. Friend requests too. For the posts in a "timeline" which was new and fancy in those days, all you see is the caption of a post which also gets truncated quite a bit as USSD also has to show it's options like:
1. Like
2. Comment
3. Next Post
4. Main Menu
This was around '13 or '14 I guess. After which I later got my first computer- a laptop. Anyways, the tactile feel of pressing the buttons on a T-9 keypad is nostalgic to me. 😅 And if you were a pro at texting, u must hv used shrtcts lyk dis too w/ emojis lyk :-) <3 -
Reducing API access to third party apps seems like a fucking short sighted move, Twitter.
Presumably given up on innovating on the platform and decided to milk what you have.
Doesn't excite me about your future.5 -
To my dear friends complaining about GDPR, if companies providing free services in exchange for users data didn't fuck up completely, there wouldn't be any GDPR. In history, regulations always come after people fuck ups, uncle Bob has some nice talks about that.1

Did anyone else follow the epic duck twitter battle between museums around the world?
Seems it was started by The MERL: https://twitter.com/TheMERL/status/...
A nice summary: https://mashable.com/article/...
I agree completely with the one tweeted response in the link above:
"Honestly seeing museums flex over ducks in their collection is the kind of energy I want from 2019" (https://mobile.twitter.com/hannahke...) -
Hey guys, does someone knows if Twitter colludes with other websites and/or services to collect data, because I thought that privacy-wise, Twitter wasn’t as bad as Facebook as I just use Twitter to follow youtubers and Donald Trump(to keep up with his craziness) and never post anything. But I just got a Python Machine Learning ad just. And it’s spooky because I’m currently (trying to be) learning Deep Learning and Google knows it (🤬🤬 you udemy ads) but Twitter!!?? Do they have a way to link my account??6

I'm so pissed off at twitter REST API. On their site is a example: https://api.twitter.com/1.1/... but it doesn't work, Volley always returned 404, and guess what I tried. I changed the order of screen name and count to this: https://api.twitter.com/1.1/... and it works. I don't even. I sat there pulling my hair out for 2 hours just for this, fuck.3

So I work at a digital agency and the second my manager heard Twitter had upped its character limit he started planning out all the new hashtags and emojis he’s going to include to max out the limit.
Please Twitter, stop.1 -
People, even on devrant, are complaining about having to change their Twitter passwords. A major security event is not the only occasion to change your password (for anything).
You should change your passwords for everything regularly. Like, once every month or two.
This is why password managers are brilliant.5 -
A senior dev I’ve interacted with only on Twitter, whom I looked up to, who has blog, newsletter, buzzword tweets and all that jingles.

Why doesn't Twitter have a public API without authentication for simple stuff, such as reading tweets. One can do that without logging in on the website, why shouldn't code be able to do it.5

Legit questions!
How does facebook secures itself, we never heard news like facebook hacked, user data stolen, recently with ddos, twitter and other websites were affected but not Facebook?

Does anyone else feel kind of bad for Twitter at the moment?
They are trying all sorts but don't seem to be able to find something sustainable.5 -

Sometimes, I use the Twitter's advanced search to find a tweet I wrote saying (sic) "DUDE, I LOVE YOU", because it also linked to a repository that I found (and still find) overly useful, but can't manage to remember anytime I need it.3

Just realised that I've not been on Twitter since downloading this app; just popped on and rejected 8 follower requests from bots, had a look around ... Saw it was still shit and came back here 😬

Since I can't make many posts, I'll try squeeze them all in one:
1. Phone recruitment interview went "well", I even spoke french at some point! 😃
I have to brush up my knowledge again for the technical test (I hate them). Somehow I got excited, which I shouldn't, but only time will tell...
2. My brain is stuck with opening a Twitter account, mainly for following people/companies news. I don't know if it's worth it, so I would your feedback on this.
3. I've finally come down to listening to synthwave while coding and I was wondering if there's any good free service (I'm still poor, so I don't want neither Deezer nor Spotify), preferably with a UWP app on Windows 10 (that is not Soundcloud).4 -
I was sitting in a client meeting recently and we were discussing the client's social media requirements. We said we'll setup Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Google+ profiles when the replied "What about Whatsapp?"
We said "That's a messaging app".
Client "Well, we want to receive messages, so set us up with a Whatsapp profile too"2 -
Can someone suggest me a good Twitter client. Half of my feed is straight up garbage, filed with tweets from accounts I don't follow or ads. 80% of the accounts I follow are developers, yet more than half the posts I see are related to politics. Why!! just why!!??!!??
Also I wish more apps had chronogical sorting of posts like devrant. :/8 -
Time for some one-off self-promotion.
I used to be very active around here, but dropped off the face of the internet world for a bit. I still lurk around and respond when people mention me in comments, but if you'd like to see things I post, and projects I work on, please consider following me on twitter.

For those devRanters who are active (or passive) on Twitter, I am looking for fellow programmers to follow.
I am looking for educational, interesting and funny tweets about coding/programming.
Of course if think you think you fit in the description, I would like to follow you too.
Do you have suggestions?16 -
The new twitter developer stuff is SHIT.
I need to apply now for my small app I use wanted to build this evening as an automation site project. Can't you cunts just give me access to this api so I can finish my projects.
How the fuck should I describe in 300 characters THAT I WILL BE TWEETING ONE TWEET PER WEEK NOTIFYING ABOUT A NEW EPISODE.
Now I need to fill 80 more characters with some dumb stuff just to be able to apply.....8 -
Hey, I hear you like developers ranting! Maybe you also like developers swearing: https://twitter.com/gitlost1

Fast-forward couple of hours, I decided to post a picture of it (it wasn't bleeding or anything) on Twitter. 2 seconds pass, and my account got suspended.
I have 2 simcards: one for calls, one for unlimited data.
Twitter is trying to call me to verify the account, but I have my data phone number in the profile.

Tech Twitter is a fucking joke, unless you're a somewhat accomplished programmer, wrote something interesting / useful, or at the least have contributed anything meaningful that isn't just a repository with Markdown documents in then I don't want to see your fucking stupid inspirational quotes or words of encouragement with thousands of damn retweets. The circle jerk is frankly just unbearable.
There are plenty of developers that you can learn a lot from and that's great, and I don't want to put new developers down, but you're really not in any position to be giving advice or motivational monologues, you're still new, or worse yet, you've literally just started. Behave yourself.
I'm convinced they're all just LARPers who jerk each other off and shut people down when they have "naughty" opinions. They spend more time writing articles about HTML tags or some aspect of JavaScript you can just get from MDN and get a million fucking applause for it. Maybe you'd be a better programmer if you actually did some programming.
Okay I'm done8 -
No, Twitter, I will not delete my tweet wishing for the death of a video game character. I will, however, delete my account and invite all my friends to move elsewhere if you don't accept my appeal.7
-
How the heck can Twitter's algorithms for selecting "Who to follow" and "Trends" suggestions? I tweet exclusively (but rarely) about tech, but Twitter seems to think that loudmouthed SJWs would be the perfect people for a tech tweeter to follow.
FFS, intersectional gender studies from a class struggle perspective are not of the slightest interest to a techie.
Maybe Twitter just selects the most frequent tweeters in you area, regardless of content.3 -
Today I had nothing to do and started writing a twitter bot that tweets a random picture from bing maps filtering seas which are uninteresting. I think this is good for 1 day development.

I have been trying to use the digits by Twitter Api for web and have been contacting them on everything possible and finding any help for a month and have got almost nowhere. I added ssl and did all the stuff they told me to do.... Wtf Twitter still trying to get this to work2

I know it's not really related to development, but I got in a discussion on twitter and one dude tweeted "in science, 1 isn't 1"
And so I was like "mate what? science is highly dependent on math and in math, 1 is kinda always worth math"
And this this girl comes in and just says:
"it's not true that 1 is always 1 because there's binary code as well"
And was was like totally astonished, like, have you even studied something? 1b = 1d = 1x and it's always 1 in whatever base!
(she even says she's some sort of engineer in her bio)8 -
Fuck, got one of my Twitter bots permanently suspended. Twitter won't even tell me why.
It was called "gifb0t" and simply searched for "favourite gif" every hour and Retweeted 5 of the search results.
It turned up some killer gifs.
But it also sometimes (unintentionally) found porn gifs... Maybe someone complained?
Frustrating as I have other bots that are allowed to keep running.
Farewell and thanks, gifb0t!
And fuck you, Twitter.2 -
A year ago was my last rant post, now I'm back around the same dates, that's curious, isn't it?
BTW here are also # functions? I have been on twitter for a long time, I acquired some bad habits! 😅4 -
I set up two of my raspberry pis in the last days to contribute for the SETI@home project and post the status of their tasks hourly to twitter.

Twitter disclosed a bug on its platform that impacted users who accessed their platform using Firefox browsers.
According to the report of ZDNet: Twitter stored private files inside the Firefox browser's cache (a folder where websites store information and files temporarily). Twitter said that once users left their platform or logged off, the files would remain in the browser cache, allowing anyone to retrieve it. The company is now warning users who share systems or used a public computer that some of their private files may still be present in the Firefox cache. Malware could be used to scrape and steal this data.2 -
Sooo, this DDoS I read about, it's hitting quite a few mayor sites isn't it? From what I've noticed at least Twitter, GitHub, Dyn. Any other mayor ones?3

Last week I finally deleted my Twitter account. DevRant has succeeded where Twitter deeply failed me: in providing good laughs, a friendly community, a less popularity-biased algo, and interesting content. I kept it for promotion just in case I'd ever get around to publishing a blog regularly, but even if I eventually do, I no longer give a **** about Twitter.2

Who the hell is Dhruv, and why is Twitter suggesting I follow them? That jumping elephant drives me nuts!3
-
Twitter api restricts me to fetch only 3202 tweets and if I had to fetch the retweeters count is limited to 100 .. is there any open source which will help me get through this problem because the data being collected is not sufficient for analysis
-
I used to use Twitter for character count often while debugging or writing test cases. Now the shitty ring counter is freaking useless😑

Any help?3 -
When you need to reactivate your Twitter dev account, get surprised by amount of the shit you need to write and simply refuse it. Fuck this. At least i can focus on more fun tasks than social networks implementations.
