Tried several Linux distros and every single one has performance issues for some reason while Windows is stable. I am confused and can't find the reason for it. I like Linux very much but it's unusable for me.

    What kind of "performance issues?"
  • 0
    Elaborate.

    Well, you have the "arch" tag in your rant - ofcourse it is unstable.

    The most stable distro (in my oppinion) is mint

    @Gophyr @ThaOneDude Some programs need a lot time to start, programs just freeze or crash, system freezes for several seconds etc.

    @Plastikmensch I use ubuntu and that doesn't happen to me. Maybe try mint like @Linux suggested.

    @Linux Interestingly Arch was until recently the most stable distro for me.

    @Plastikmensch
    Arch is not meant to be stable, it is "bleeding edge" and the definition of that is - unstable and unreliable.

    Have to tried to use Manjaro?

    @anki7 Not yet. But I'll try it when I am in the mood.

    Check cpu usage.

    Try to see if all cores are given to linux and if you have all your ram.

    And see if a software is taking a lot of juice.

    @-vim- Checked already and the only thing I see is a 100% spike on one of the cores during freezes. It's not the same core though.
  • 1
    @Plastikmensch did you check what process was making it spike
  • 0
    @-vim- gnome-shell. Whoops.

    @Plastikmensch Definitely a good distro to use. Do check it out.

    @Plastikmensch Which distro do you use currently?

    @Plastikmensch we found the problem! But it’s weird tho, gnome doesn’t use that much memory, I think there’s something making it bug, but don’t worry then, it’s just a DE issue, I suggest using lxde or xfce as they’re lightweight

    I personally love budgie desktops or KDE Plasma ones!

    @Linux funnily enough the most stable distro I‘ve tried so far is manjaro, which is arch based :P

    @LuPaw
    So, what happends if you forget to update it for a couple of month? Shit is breaking.
  • 0
    @Linux Just don‘t forget to update :P
    First thing I do whenever I boot is update^^ It just feels right to do so :P
  • 1
    Well what DEs were you using?
  • 0
    @simo002m Gnome, KDE and whichever Ubuntu uses.
  • 1
    @Plastikmensch Well those aren't really that lightweight and I wouldn't recommemd running them on older hardware
  • 0
    @simo002m Even though I need an upgrade I don't consider my hardware old. But since there is Ryzen and DDR4...
  • 1
    @Plastikmensch Well I never really had too much trouble with Cinnamon. Something that I never had trouble with, unless I had configured it improperly, is openbox. Something lightweight that doesn't need configuration(unless you want to make it look prettier) is mate

    Do not use gnome, unity, cinnamon, or KDE. They are the cause of 99% of Linux performance problems.

    @linuxxx Hm... Budgie looks interesting.
  • 1
    I use lxde/openbox at home, and couldn't be happier.

    @Plastikmensch
    Seconding Mint with xfce!

    Decided to go for Manjaro with Budgie. Works well so far, but that was also the case with Antergos first. Time will tell...

    @Condor Did you mean Intel with AMD cards? This issue is as far as I know solved. But yes, the hardware has a huge Impact on performance and stability.
    Which hardware to use highly depents on the usecase.

    Didn't know that. Thanks!

    Arch being stable was my impression too. (I think I already said that but with Arch I had the least problems overall.)
