Alright dfox, I love the community you've made, but this rant is aimed at you and the bit of hate you brought in with one of your last rants. (https://devrant.com/rants/1218222/...)

This rant is concerning the Telugu bug. For those who don't know about it, on iDevices and macOS computers, sending a special character in a certain language causes messaging apps to crash. This has happened a lot with Apple products recently.

However, I feel that your (dfox) rant about it was hasty. One of your biggest complaints with it was their QA. You then continue to have a conversation about it in the comments, talking about how it's patched in betas and complaining about it. It's obviously not all you, but still. Why the fuck would people complain about QA when the patch is in PUBLIC BETA TESTING? That is LITERALLY QA RIGHT THERE! Would you prefer Apple release a quick patch that causes another root exploit? Android, and Linux on the whole, is not exempt from ANY of this! Massive things have massive complications, and some things slip sometimes.

You say it's one of the 'worst security issues in the history of modern devices/software in terms of its ease of exploitation, vast reach, and devastating impact if used strategically.' Uh... it's a character bug, and Apple officially called it a 'memory corruption' bug. Yeah, I know, it's a bug, but still. All it can do right now is crash a few messaging apps. Sure, if done right, it could cause a lot of issues, but Meltdown and Spectre are arguably MORE DEVASTATING. They're baked into our modern processor architectures at the heart of it all, and are hard to patch without serious performance loss.

So please, with all due respect, I think it needs to be toned down. The patch has been officially released now. 'Oh, they should've patched it sooner/never let it through!' Fuck off. As if you haven't ever forgotten a bug or just missed it/can't figure out how to fix it. 'They're too big, they have the resources to fix it!' Humans can only do so much. You try doing it for that. You'll surely miss something.

Phew, that's one hell of a rant. Feel free to downvote me and hate me in the comments. I'm prepared.

    @dfox
Also, @linuxxx I saw you perpetuating it too. Just saying.
  • 1
@DLMousey I will come at anyone perpetuating hate of something like this, however intentional/unintentional/severe/light/etc. I am fucking pissed at all of the hate I see here, and it's always the same few. Apple, Google, Microsoft, REEEEEEEE. I'm sick of it.

@IllSlapU MD/SP are modern device bugs, and ones which have a worse impact than a fucking Telugu character. A bug is a bug.
  • 1
@irene You're going to hate a company because they *ACCIDENTALLY* let a surface bug slip through, and proceeded to patch it relatively quickly? Gotcha. Again, as if you haven't ever let a bug slip. Everyone does. Apple isn't MADE of computers. They're HUMANS. We have to remember that.
  • 0
@irene For a complex bug in a language a lot of things don't even support, a language which has more complex characters and standards than most, it actually is. Also, it was quicker, but they had to do QA through betas as to not break everything else in prod.
  • 3
The point was QA should have been implemented BEFORE the release of the version with the bug. It's not the first time this happened, learn from your mistakes.

@1989 I have one Apple product, my MBP. I use Android right now. I'm trying to make it clear that people are real quick to jump on the hate train.

Yeah, sorry, but I completely disagree and this rant is kind of ridiculous. I’ll say whatever I want about Apple.

The biggest Apple fanboys I know were livid about this latest Apple failure and one of them told me today he hopes they can turn it around before it’s too late.

I don’t give a shit about public betas. Like someone said in my rant, I have absolutely no interest in helping Apple debug their software. I’m not their QA and I have a job and they aren’t going to pay me. They are worth almost a trillion dollars, they can hire their own QA department.

“All it can do is crash a few messaging apps.” - that’s blatantly incorrect and shows you don’t understand the issue and didn’t read my rant. It can crash literally any app that displays the character, making apps like devRant and any other social media/user generated content app vulnerable. I know major companies that had to turn off commenting in their apps.

@ryanmhoffman Multiple languages, only partially similar bugs. Everyone misses things. Why do people think that these companies run themselves without humans? Everyone ALWAYS forgets this. They are still fucking PEOPLE. No matter who they work for.
  • 0
@Rekonnect it's not the first time that this EXACT type of bug made it through. That is very much a QA problem no matter what company it is.
  • 0
@dfox Say what you will, but you did perpetuate a thread of hate which really shouldn't exist. It was only a partially civil 'discussion' if we can call it that. Incredibly biased, saying 'Oh Apple is just shit wheeeee' instead of talking about it much at all. Pointless waste of time.
  • 1
@Rekonnect why write up a rant before understanding the actual scope of the issue though?

The main premise your entire rant was based on is demonstrably wrong.
  • 2
@Rekonnect it's called devRant, not devCivilizedDiscussion...

@dfox I've been trying to grasp the whole thing before I typed this up. I can't think very fast lately, there's a lot of shit going on, and I read your rant yesterday and it fired me up. I'm not an Apple fanboy, Android fanboy, any kind of fanboy or anything like people would call me. I'm just sick of the same shit over and over here. This is adding to it and I feel the need to make it clear that it's a problem.

I admit, the rant isn't perfect. It was typed kinda quick and I'm also kinda busy, but I have a minute here and there.

So, please, explain to me how someone could get user data and use it through the (now patched) Telugu bug, that you said was a massive security issue. MD/SP can be relatively easily executed with software available now, Telugu is a character memory corruption bug.

@ryanmhoffman Yea, I know. But it's devRant, not devHateOnAppleGoogleAndMicrosoft.
  • 3
Apple has fucked up a lot, A LOT lately and imho they deserve the criticism and I agree with @dfox
  • 2
I mean the irony that’s been pointed out by others here is just kind of crazy. There’s nothing civilized about this rant. My rant targeted Apple (who deserved it), but not any specific people...

Also, I wouldn’t have had any issue with this rant if it wasn’t for that fact and the simple fact that’s it’s based on a gigantic factual inaccuracy.

@Rekonnect security issues come in different forms. Not every single one has to be about accessing sensitive data. I explain in my rant (that you didn’t read fully) about why the issue was catastrophic so you can read it there.

Put in short, rendering apps unusable as a whole is a security issue of epic proportions. I’ve personally heard of 0 public exploits of meltdown. A bad issue, but from my understanding, not exploitable with 15 seconds of work and in general difficult to render entire apps unusable and crash devices.

I'm noticing something. People call me a fanboy for defending things like this. What I'm seeing is kinda the opposite happening with a lot of this community, like, everyone seems to love to hate. Why? Again, ik, devRANT, but still. Apple deserves some flak, of course, everyone does. I think it's just a bit disproportionate.
  • 1
@Rekonnect you literally called me names and said I was being ridiculous without even fully reading the rant you were responding to. If you’re going to do that to someone, at least give them the courtesy of reading their thoughts in whole.

I agree, I don’t like when people use the word fanboy, but IMO that behavior kind of warrants it and certainly makes one seem like a fanboy for getting this offended over a rant that criticized Apple.
  • 0
@dfox I don't get offended. I get pissed that people forget things.
  • 1
The funny part about this is I actually would have appreciated a well-reasoned rebuttal to my rant that wasn’t borderline abusive and got the facts straight.
  • 0
@dfox And I did read the rant. It didn't change a damn thing. Read it again. Same.
  • 0
@Rekonnect you literally got the most important fact/problem with this bug wrong, that it was extremely wide-reaching and not just “limited to messaging.”

A well-reasoned, factually correct and non-abusive rebuttal would have been great.

@dfox why don't just DELETE users WHERE username="Rekonnect"
  • 0
@dfox I don't have time for that right now. I had a rant to put down and a minute to do it. Give me a while and I could come up with something better. Right now I'm pissed for many reasons, this is only one. There's a ton of other life shit going on.

@GarreauArthur I respect his right to have an opinion, and I don’t want to set a bad example.

But to be clear, this rant does violate our rules (mainly targeting other users), but since it’s me I really don’t care.
  • 1
    @GarreauArthur Rly? Lol, nice try.
  • 1
@Rekonnect I hope everything is ok, but please do realize that’s pretty ridiculous/unfair that you didn’t have 2 minutes to read my rant fully but you had a number of minutes to trash me and work I carefully put together.

I worked hard on the rant, tried to make sure I had the facts correct, and I stand by completely what I said.
  • 0
@dfox I target like this only because your opinions carry weight and stuff like that. I do have shit to do now, and now I expect people to hate me for coming at you like that guy just did. Idc. Might leave. Getting sick of all the shit.
  • 0
@Rekonnect the commendable thing to do here would have been “I see now I misunderstood the scope of the issue, so I’m going to take another look.” Doubling down didn’t help your case here.

    Sorry to see you go.
  • 0
@dfox Please don't lecture me on what to do. Wrong time. I'm still figuring shit out. I get enough of all that from literally anyone older than me.
  • 0
@dfox And just to settle it, I will look again. Later. Don't need to bash me over it. Please. There's more than I want to explain happening right now.
  • 0
@FrodoSwaggins Thanks for being one of the few people not calling me out. Helps me feel better about my stance.
  • 1
@irene This is a rant platform. And people have been telling me to tame my anger for years. Your word doesn't help at all. In fact, people saying that makes it worse. Nobody ever gets that.
  • 0
@irene YES! IF YOU LOOK AT MY RANT HISTORY YOU WILL SEE I HAVE AUTISM! OF COURSE I GET PISSED!
  • 0
Why the fuck do you bash a guy with diagnosed mental problems including anger issues? Jesus! @irene
  • 0
@irene Aspergers symptoms include anger issues, Aspergers is under Autism spectrum disorder in the DSM-V. Look up the question before you bring it up please.
  • 0
@FrodoSwaggins I'm just sick of people complaining about my anger issues. As if I'm not PAINFULLY AWARE.
  • 1
  • 0
@Rekonnect Not sure what your exactly mean but yeah I stand by what I said. I've mainly got different reasons for 'hating' apple but those are already known.

I'm not going to take anything back in case you were wondering.
  • 0
    @FrodoSwaggins Thanks for making sense!

Source for bricking/serious damage claim: http://news.softpedia.com/news/...

Of course they can be lying, but they claim it was a first-hand experience.
  • 0
@FrodoSwaggins it probably is I think. When I accidentally ran into the character on desktop (while I was trying to delete the rant) it messed up my whole computer for a few minutes and I thought it would have only screwed up the browser window/Chrome at most. But it seemed to have a much larger impact.

@Rekonnect I think it comes from the disillusionment. Apple has a reputation to uphold and since Steve left the building, things have not been the same. It is not as much of a cluster fuck as Gilbert Amelio but someone needs to go in and kick some programmer ass at Apple.

They need to "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish" and now they are fat and lazy.

Someone needs to have the balls to walk the halls and when it is required yell "get the fuck out of my company" at those who can't get their head out of their ass.

Oh yea, it is also a hiring problem. They hire arrogant passionless pussies with cranial rectal impaction.
