I just watched this documentary called "take your pills" and seeing the weird programmer they interviewed I got curious about how many DevRanters use Addy as a coding booster? Would you consider it just a normal performance enhancer like caffeine? Have you tried it?

I've only noticed coffee heads like myself here and I was wondering if some of the people that aren't are against the use of Adderall too.

I'd love to hear some thoughts on the subject.

I was watching it yesterday and thinking "wow, none of the pills a shrink ever prescribed to me gave me nothing but numbs and headaches. Where can I get some of those?"
I've never used anything else than coffee and rage, but cannot blame to those who wants better performance wrapped in method. Sometimes I would love to have some magic source of powers to be better at coding. Then I remember I already have dependency problems, and another one could be troublesome...

@stereohisteria I was thinking something similar when I was watching it too, I guessed it'd be a last resort of sorts for my certification exam.

On Wikipedia it says there's also a rectal way of administration 8)

I'd say it can help the moment you need it the most, but then you need to count in a couple of off days afterwards. A bit like having a boost after smoking a cigarette, but being more tired an hour later, compared to the moment before you smoked it.

@FunkDelegate ++ for the alternate way of administration 😐😂

@Pseudonymous didn't know if yerba mate I'll look into it, and please do and tag me in that rant I bet it'd be interesting

@Pseudonymous I sometimes sniff caffeine. A friend of mine made this, he added some etheric oils for flavour. It's quite nice. It gives you a lot of focus and it doesn't make you nervous at all (unlike coffee, as coffee tends to be of very poor quality).

I've never used Addy myself, but a lot of my friends do and they say the shit is amazing. Trying to go about getting some legally arguing my case for a weak attention span. So far no luck, but I'm also not that desperate to get it.

If I have to, I'll just buy some from a friend or something.

Try Eleutherococcus instead. Makes alert and boosts your immune system. But please not after 4pm. That shit works longer than your average caffeine dosage.

The adrenaline from perpetual deadline proximity keeps me awake all week. No need for pills.

@Bernarnold I want to try yerba mate, does it have a good taste?

@irene I would consider dependency upon a substance to be addiction not necessarily intake frequency.

@cabrasm @finiteAutomaton don't know what dose are but they've spiked my curiosity.

I'm not sure what it is but if it's drugs then nope for me. I do coffee and alcohol and that's it.

@linuxxx it's a drug primarily prescribed to patients with ADHD but often abused as a performance booster by students, coders, athletes, business people, etc. Because the primary effects of the drug are enhanced focus and resilience during daunting or monotonous tasks. That's what I know from what I've read.

last research quoted hit me quit a bit: adderall vs placebo no performance boost only difference was "they felt super confident on it". at that moment whole feeling of "i want some" vanished

@AlexDeLarge I am very much aware of that yes :)

@irene @AlexDeLarge Are you joking guys? He's from Holland. You guys think he doesn't know what drugs are? 😁

@MrJimmy yeah, you're right. I thought I could say sth useful, but the fact is most drugs don't do any good.
About the OP: it definitely isn't a normal booster like caffeine. It's much harder drugs. You could do it once or twice in a year without much harm, but don't do it more than that.

@MrJimmy In my defense, I was talking about a plant which is generally known for being good for the immune system. It works differently than e.g. caffeine because it is boosting your mitochondrial cell production. See it as an antidote to everydays toxins like (added) sugar.

@irene True. There's a reason why coca cola replaced cocaine by caffeine. There has to be drugs in it 8) I used to know a guy who was addicted to coca cola. I'm addicted to coffee myself. And to nicotine. The combination gives quite some endorphins production 😁

@irene At high concentrations of sugar, your body makes high concentrations of antibodies to balance the sugar levels in your blood. The thing is, sugar gets out of your blood quite fast, but the antibodies don't. That's the nervous feeling you have after you eat a lot of sugar. It obviously makes you want to eat more sugar to balance out the antibodies.

Now here's the fun part for the coca cola company: you get the same effect by using sugar replacements. To your body, there's no difference. Same for all the other bad stuff you know about sugar.
    $$$ 😈 $$$

@MrJimmy I agree. Especially when there are so many natural alternatives (including just having a good night's sleep).

@Pseudonymous Yes, but you do not need to convince your MD to sign a prescription for them, and they are (generally) less prone for side effects.

Even your average herbal tea can be a fantastic "drug".

@finiteAutomaton quoting the documentary "drugs don't have side effects, they have effects, it depends on which are your desired effects"

@Pseudonymous That's What I meant by "all the other bad stuff". Thanks for elaborating it 😊

@irene There's a star trek episode with music with drug effects. Was awesome. Was with a DJ playing sci-fi music (obviously) and people dancing to it, in complete ecstasy 😁
That was in the old show, with cpt Kirk and dr Spock. You can imagine Spock in that scene 8)

The idea was an evil DJ turning innocent people into willing slaves. Maybe we can make a porn version. I'll be the DJ 8)

    @irene Edit: added 2nd paragraph

@irene it does literally. There are at least 2 known effects:
    1. Exposure to high volume music makes your brain produce endorphins
    2. Long term exposure to repititive music does the same thing. My experience is after about 4 to 5 hours 😁

@irene Nice! One of the best styles ever! Maybe we can use it for our porn flick 😁

@irene Fascist pigs. Just kidding. Maybe it's better this way. There'd be child porn before you know it.

Btw, how come I never read or hear about porn devs? 50% of the net is porn, so there should be lots of those. How do they stay invisible? How do porn sites search for devs?
  • 0
@irene Maybe they're crap devs that would be jobless otherwise. Those sites used to be (or still are, don't know) infested with viruses and bad links and the like. Made me think they suck at security to start with.
  • 1
@irene yeah, there's certainly money to be made. Hey, I've got this fantastic idea for an app. It's an app where porn devs can express frustrations in anonymity. Let's do it together. You do the development, I'll do the idea 😁
  • 0
@irene but you know about porn right? 😁
