If Oracle wins in the case against Google, how do you think the outcome will influence new developers and the CS field in general?

Can I get a quick rundown of the case?

@jhh2450 basically, Google was wanting to use some Java API for Android that Oracle had created, and since google wants to keep android open source, they went ahead and made their own version of the API and wrote it in java. Oracle sued for copyright infringement on their API and want $9 billion from google. Google won the initial case, but oracle fought back and it will be going back to court soon.

The way it’s been presented to me, it sounds like if they win, Oracle will be able to charge people to program in Java.

@Blake That's textbook definition of bullshit.

@jhh2450 Right? Imagine having to pay rights to speak English!

Would google react by making c#/Go/somethingelse the primary language for android development?

@AnonymousMooCow that would be very hard to change, but then again, if we could just make it work like on a normal os where you can compile the language you want on every os, that would be great! Why limit to one language type of bullshit?

@AnonymousMooCow Google has already moved to Kotlin for all these libraries, good move on their part.

@Blake but doesn't kotlin run on the jvm and use the same apis as java apps?

@AnonymousMooCow Java and Kotlin have interoperable frameworks, but they are two completely separate languages!

Ah, I thought the case was on the APIs and not the java language.
