I hate it when people say they want to "GET a new girlfriend"...
Shouldn't it be "FIND a new girlfriend"?
I mean you can't just go into the supermarket and get some butter, milk and a new girlfriend. You can't buy them. By saying that, you seem to me as if you're treating women as objects. I know it's technically possible to buy a girlfriend, but that's prostitution.
I think that "GET a new girlfriend" just doesn't sound right...

Your opinions?

    A get request doesn't change state, so it's definitely wrong one to use. Only use it to find out if they are interested and available.

    To POST or HEAD or even PATCH a girlfriend is obviously not better 😂

    "Nice guys" would disagree ;)

    @2erXre5 and under no circumstances try to DELETE a girlfriend. That will get you in trouble with local authorities.
  • 6
    @YouAreAPIRate the best would be PUT in an idempotent way

    Time to POST a girlfriend

    So this turned into a conversation about HTTP requests...

    But in java they are objects

    <@Qwby>
    I know it's kind of irrelevant but it is a topic that is bothering me for a long time... Just wanted to hear your opinions. That's all.

    Also I said "seem to me as if" not "are".

    @Qwby
    I don't understand your mean behaviour

    @Qwby It may feel irrelevant to you, yet there is some gain in reflecting the common sayings.

    I am more on board with the "thinking determines words" than "words determine thinking" (as in: a sexist person will use language in a sexist way rather than sexist language makes a person sexist) , yet there are some cases were I do see people have a sense of entitlement also due to the fact one how we use language.

    Example: What happens after you GET a friend? They are *your* friend. That implies possession rather than a connection ("They are one dear friend of mine").

    And true enough, one time in a bar I went in between a fight of a couple. One dude was pulling a crying and fleeing person back to them, once I stepped in, he shouted at me: "What are you doing!? She is MY girlfriend!"

    Implication: "She is my property. I can do with my property what I want."

    @CozyPlanes Mean? Maybe, but also honest. It's also "mean" to imply people would think badly of women, just because they used a common saying. When they say "get a gf", I bet you most don't think they'd buy a woman, they think "I should get to it", meaning they start their search for a gf. Getting worked up over this might be more of a personal problem.

    I'll just leave this thread though, don't want to be mean to more people.

    I thought this was DEVrant, not reddit

    Well then what should I do?

    Find one in the wild and throw my balls at them until I've caught her?
  • 4
    @2erXre5 GET HEAD? 😏

    * opens rant *

    * ranters avatar is a guy *

    ok, he's just joking

    For me getGF() includes query. So get = find but find =/= get.
    Anyways. Have fun looking for one.

    How about women saying they want to "GET a new boyfriend..." ?
  • 2
    @ilikeglue and objects in java can be destroyed.
  • 2
    @kerbonkers and can also be owned by you :D
  • 2
    How about

    girlfriend = new Girl() ;
  • 5
    What if you do find a girl attractive, ask her out for a coffee and she replies with HTTP 418? 😋

    @ilikeglue @SumitkumarD @SumitkumarD
    girlfriend.@SumitkumarD

    My object pool is full of instantiated waifus

    Techically, everyone is an object.

    Hold on!

    This discussion about GETting or FINDing a girlfriend is nice, yeah yeah, but you're all assuming the same thing here! And that is: it is possible to GET butter and milk from the supermarket. This assumption is incorrect; try FINDing anything in my local supermarket! Without FIND there's no GET.

    @thesagya ,😂😁

    Women are objects. Look up the definition of an "object".
  • 1
    @burrellramone Not if you're coding in a non-OOP language.

    @filthyranter You're right. In those cases they are but constructs and structures.

    We all are just classes inheriting from IPerson

    So what if they view women as objects. They are completely free to do so. Just like women are completely free not to become girlfriends of such men. If a man is handsome enough and skilled enough in flirting, saying he GOT a girlfriend is pretty close to reality. Same goes for attractive women. Looks can very easily be used for manipulation. Nothing new in that.
