This is super childish but it's the gameserver insidstry and karma is a bitch.

TLDR: I hacked my boss

I was working for a gameserver and I did development for about 3 months and was promised pay after the network was released. I followed through with a bunch of dev friends and the guy ended up selling our work. He didn't know that I was aware of this as he tried to tell people to not tell us but one honest person came forward and said he sold our work for about 8x the price of what he owed ALL OF US collectively.

I proceeded to change the server password and when he asked why he couldn't log in I sent him an executable (a crypted remote access tool) and told him it was an "encryption tunnel" that makes ssh and file transfers secure. Being the idiot that he is he opened it and I snagged all of his passwords including his email and I changed them through a proxy on his machine to ensure I wouldn't get two factored with Google. After I was done I deleted system 32 :3

    @ewpratten you got it. As long as I get paid the data stays intact. Try and screw me you better lock your door before the swat team shows up 😂

    Don't know what to think of this honestly. While your retaliation was indeed justified, it has gone way too far and makes you an even bigger asshole.
  • 10
    @PrivateGER I agree with that.
  • 9
    @PrivateGER meh I am the definition of too far
  • 17
    @n3xus Don't cut yourself on that edge.
  • 3
    @PrivateGER so you like to be lied to and not paid? Charity.
  • 1
    @jespersh haha!!
  • 4
    @nuubsthename Could always open a court case. What HE however did was NOT justfied and the move of an ass.
  • 3
    @PrivateGER or the guy could just be a decent human and keep up his end of the deal?
  • 5
    @nuubsthename Or OP could be a reasonable person and not just throw away all evidence to get his earned money?
  • 5
    @PrivateGER I low-key don't care. It's more satisfying to give him discomfort
  • 4
    @n3xus I think he'd be more uncomfortable in court but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  • 2
    @xorith based on the facts stated: 1) work done 2) good samaritan steps forward gives heads up of bad business practice 3) payment made to person work done for 4) payment not made to person responsible for work?

    Wait for lengthy court case or protect yourself? Self preservation.
  • 5
    @nuubsthename If you think that's self preservation, then I hope you have your funeral costs taken care of already.

    Now quit being a fucking idiot.
  • 8
    And to spell it out for ya.

    1) Has evidence in the form of someone coming forward

    2) Has contract?? (at this point, I'm going to assume no but let's give him the benefit here)

    3) Bring a lawyer into the mix.

    You say lengthy court proceedings, yet a large number of contract disputes are solved in mediation because the shady cunt who did the deed would rather toss money at the problem and go back to being shady then deal with the cost of lawyers in court.

    So not only did this idiot throw that chance away (if they ever had it by having a contract), they also engaged in illegal activity and could now be the subject of a lawsuit themselves - only a criminal one.

    And he's done posted it on social media with enough identifying information that no doubt someone familiar with the situation could easily sink his ship.

    @xorith from what I know, this isn't the first time @nexus shut down a server.

    Hence our "always install a backdoor" joke.
  • 5
    @xorith agree with everything here. Just hate rat bastards pulling fast ones, and to have to be inconvenienced to get the right thing done just irks me.
  • 5
    @nuubsthename

    It irks me as well, but so does doing something illegal in place of the right thing. Like I said, it shits on our profession as a whole and it's completely illogical when you consider the potential consequences.

    Posting it up here for bragging rights is just the added cherry on top of the dumbshit sundae.
  • 6
    @xorith hey you right there... can you also express yourself without discriminating someone?

    Just Fucking calm down, okay?
    We all already got our own problems. No need to put that bitch ass oil into that Fucking fire!

    Fucking calm down, dude. DevRant is a place of freedom and tolerance without discrimination towards fellow ranters.

    If you can't stick to that rule, well... then you're probably the one who should think if he's doing right by staying on DevRant.

    This is not ducking SO.

    @-ANGRY-CLIENT-

    Apologies.

    By "kids" I am referring to immature people.

    Age is just a number. Maturity is the measurement.

    I also am calm. I just decided to use the platform for it's named purpose and break out my Bostonian. I don't get to use it much.
  • 2
    I know you're meaning it good, but please don't also put discriminating words. Use "Constructive criticism" and not the opposite form.
  • 5
    @-ANGRY-CLIENT-

    I do that enough, but it was already tried by @PrivateGER

    So I figured I'd use some baser language that might get the message across more clearly.
  • 2
    Shit happens. He fucked up, you could have fucked with him in many ways. Regardless. He wont do it twice.
  • 6
    @xorith Thanks for being the only rational person here.
  • 5
    @n3xus That was a seriously stupid action of you! Only immature people do stuff like that.

    As @xorith said: Your act shits on the whole of our profession.
  • 2
    @PonySlaystation this cunt called swat teams on people so I mean I think it's called for if you ask me
  • 3
    @n3xus well if as someone suggested here and its not your first time doing shit like this - you're only making yourself a higher risk for getting the blue boys to pay you a visit too.

    Which i hope wont happen but you keep pushing your luck..

    Anyway, time to find something new and productive
  • 2
    @n3xus this guy sounds like a dirty rat, why even do business with him?
  • 3
    Nowhere does it say that he didn't pay you, and selling something to make a profit isn't ilegal or scummy, it's entrepreneurship.

    I don't agree with what you did.
  • 1
    @Finnim well he never paid us and swatted some people who did development on the network and then sold our plugin claiming he didn't have enough to pay us?
  • 2
    @n3xus well I don't feel sorry for him then.
  • 2
    @n3xus The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire 😂
  • 4
    @Finnim

    It's less about feeling sorry for a shitty person and more about the OP being an equally shitty person for doing what he did.
  • 2
    @xorith I won't deny that I'm a shitty person. I live by the rule of not letting yourself get taken advantage of and I did just that.
  • 6
    @n3xus Like most things, there's multiple ways to accomplish the same thing. I avoid being taken advantage of by using the tools available for that specific purpose.

    "I hacked my boss"

    Social engineering is not hacking, kid.
