Hi everyone, I've a desktop and in my area power cut is quite frequent. Although we've backup power, but sometimes it takes ~15 mins to come back.

Is UPS only option for desktops? Laptops nowadays have so long battery power, why there is no good option for desktops. UPS usually stays for 5 mins. Could you please suggest something better, as I've seen lots of desktops in posts? Thanks.

Laptops have a longer battery life than a ups because desktops tend to use hardware that is power hungry. For example, a CPU on a laptop is not the same as a desktop one. So yeah, you only have a ups to rely on

You could, in theory, build a battery bank to give you maybe an hour of time at a powerful PC. You'd need a number of batteries and a reasonably powerful PSW inverter, say 1000w, but it could be done.

As long as you aren't doing anything intensive on the PC, a UPS should survive that long if not more. 300w UPS on a modern computer can be 2 hours if you aren't gaming or stressing the CPU. They use very little in idle especially if you don't have a high end GPU or lots of hard drives and fans etc.

@stop usually power comes in 5-10 mins, sometimes it goes for upto 20 mins. I don't know exactly how much power does my PC consume. It's not a gaming PC. I run linux and do reading and programming development tasks, like running IDEs, DBs, Java programs etc.

Problem is as power goes, I've to make sure to 'preserve-state' which is very cumbersome process.

@thatJavaGuy Do a Google search for power consumption calculators and find out.

@thatJavaGuy I still think even with that you'd be good for an hour easily. You could get one of those power measurement tool things to see?

ask your local electrician if he has something.
