So I just got one of those pop ups saying YOUR COMPUTER HAS BEEN HACKED.
I decided to call the number, while firing up a Linux virtual machine, running Linux Mint. I customized the home button to look like the Windows start menu logo, and proceeded to let that scammer connect to it.
He was so confused, considering the script he was reading off of was meant for windows. He opened up terminal, and started typing in "tree" and told me that's how many viruses I have.

OW FUCKING GREAT
BEEN CREATING THIS WEBSITE FOR 1 MONTH USING REACTJS. IT'S HALFWAY DONE. NOW THE HIGHER UPS CHANGES THEIR DECISION THAT WE HAVE TO MAKE IT WITH WORDPRESS.
FUUUUUCCCCKKKK. I'M FUCKING OUT.21 -
Gmail puts emails from YouTube into spam, Google Chrome blocks pop ups from Google Drive
10/10 compatibility across products _/\_6 -
Holy crap, just consulted with a company who wanted to fire the entire 6 person backend team because:
"They don't produce any tangible work or add value to the company."
Initially I didn't catch on, went to chat with the devs and realised the dilemma. Took 3 hours of (almost heated) debate before the higher ups understood the the value and purpose of backend devs.
This is a kitchen appliance company who recently moved into IoT 🙃12 -
Fucked up an sql join once and accidentally deleted myself from the employee table in the prod database. So I kinda fired myself... Good thing we had backups. 😂2

I do push-ups and sit-ups whilst running long running CPU-intensive jobs so that I can feel the burn along with my CPU.5

Client: Hi. my SEO guy messed up the website. Its kind of .... you know .... gone. You must have the backup. Please restore
Me (after 10 mins): Done
.............
Client: Hi again. I don't see my changes from yesterday. Why?
Me: Because I had 2 months old backup.
Client: Why?
Me: Because that's the last time I worked on your website. And you changed the credentials later on.
Client: But you're a programmer. You must have had a back door to take back ups.
........
Client: Hello?
Me: It's time to leave earth.8 -
Okay okay here's another one
Client:pls put a pop up that asks the users weather they are sure about leaving the page.
Me: I think that would be redundant
Since he clicked the close button to close the page.
Client: what if he is unsure of leaving the page now he will stay.
Me: :/
Client:And another one when his login fails.
Me: pop ups can be disabled it's not good to use them especially for login screen.
Client (now slightly annoyed): Well, put a pop up warning them not to, isn't it obvious.God!!! I thought you were the smart one.

Programming is a bit like a partner or is to me:
It helps me
It annoys me
I love it
I hate it
Drives me insane
Bores me to death
Excites me beyond belief
Makes me feel dumb
Makes me feel clever
Supports me
Confuses me
Some days it's beautiful
Some days it's unattractive
But going to be together for a long time through all the ups and downs.3 -
Windows: Try Edge! It blocks 13% more malware than Chrome!
Me: Try using your brain! It blocks 99.4% of ALL malware!

Windows: Try Edge! It blocks 13% more malware than Chrome!
Me: Edge, you are malware: You are an unwanted piece of software installed without the user's consent, and you make annoying pop-ups.10 -

Qualification != proficiency
Worked at a company where this bloke (Jepediah mcShitFart we shall call him) had enough programming certs and qualifications to fill a page.
I was the one fixing his fuck ups, because he coded like his ass, debugged like his ass, talked like an ass, and used to shrug off responsibility like an ass. Hr did nothing because he 'was a long time employee'.
Plus, I have met hundreds of programmers who would put many to shame, and they don't have a single qualification.10 -
Why. Why in the name of fucking god is this a thing!?.
Why a fucking huge ass parcel for like, 2 cm³ of content.
Fucking hell just why.
Explain.16 -
TL;DR: disaster averted!
Story time!
About a year ago, the company I work for merged with another that offered complementary services. As is always the case, both companies had different ways of doing things, and that was true for the keeping of the financial records and history.
As the other company had a much larger financial database, after the merger we moved all the data of both companies on their software.
The said software is closed source, and was deployed on premises on a small server.
Even tho it has a lot of restrictions and missing features, it gets the job done and was stable enough for years.
But here comes the fun part: last week there was a power outage. We had no failsafe, no UPS, no recent backups and of course both the OS and the working database from the server broke.
Everyone was in panic mode, as our whole company needs the software for day to day activity!
Now, don't ask me how, but today we managed to recover all the data, got a new server with 2 RAID HDDs for the working copy of the DB, another pair for backups, and another machine with another dual HDD setup for secondary backups!
We still need a new UPS and another off site backup storage, but for now...disaster averted!
Time for a beer! Or 20...
That is all :)4 -
Someone from the higher ups had received complaints that I don’t answer my phone enough.
My boss told them I wasn’t hired here to provide phone support.4 -
Today I'm gonna try to do a few push ups or sit ups every time my code fails to compile. Do you think I'm gonna be a better coder or a body builder at the end of the day?6

I'm tired of everyone playing the fucking victim all the damn time.
Grow the fuck up and take responsibility of your fuck ups, not blame everyone but yourself.
God people piss me off these days12 -

So, I lost my job a couple of weeks ago, and on a whim I decided to post an ad on a classifieds website advertising websites done cheap. Next thing I know I'm making money doing something I love as opposed to dealing with assholes at a checkout counter. I know the freelance life has its ups and downs but I'm happy!12 -
How to get six pack Abs (Developer Version):
1. Do 20 bicycle crunches whenever your test fails.
2. 30 seconds plank whenever there's a issue assigned to you for your code.
3. 50 mountain climbers whenever the code breaks while you are giving a demo to client/boss.
4. 12 jack-knife sit-ups whenever you miss your deadline for more than 2 weeks.11 -
Just gotta love random hibernation wake ups, went sleep on time in like a year, fell asleep quick and then my fucking 3 monitors turn on and the fucking pc woke up, for no fucking reason, blasting equal of 4 suns into my eyes.9

While being self employed as a programmer may have its ups and downs, at least no one will judge you(except yourself maybe and your clients if they know) when you code drunk and it's Wednesday night/Thursday morning.6

He: Honzo, you are great coder, but can you please stop using those sexy anime chicks as placeholder images in your templates?
I: Ups, i forgot replace them.
He: Don't worry, client also enjoy it, but he maybe is only one. He also want to know where you found them.
I: Konachan.com
What can i say, i have exciting work.22 -
Oh the ups and down of learning code. One day you feel like a programming prodigy, the next you hit a concept that makes you feel like you'll never become a professional programmer. So much to learn!!!! 😭😭7

I asked my 7-year-old niece to either do her holiday homework or do 100 Sit-ups, without saying a word she went out of the room so I thought she had gone to collect her books but instead, she came back with a water bottle and said: "start counting now".5

>Have 64gb memeory stick with software and precious memories (back ups of childhood pictures and stuff)
>Go to girlfriend's house
>Let her borrow it because she needed it for photography (pictures in the TrueCrypt file take only about a quarter of the drive)
>Get dumped by girlfriend after a while
>Shrug and be a little sad
>Find out that i dont have a local copy of what was there
>Don't have courage to ask for it back or even speak to her

Moral of the story is dont fuck with your back up and also, don't give people precious data, even the ones you trust at the time.4 -
Spent 6 hours today trying to figure out why the CSS got all jacked up on a site right before launch.
Turns out, the new college grad who went to school for front end development doesn't know how to specify elements at all.
They made all their edits using the broadest selectors possible, sometimes at the tag level.
Having never looked at the site or mock-ups I had no idea what it was supposed to look like so I spent a lot of time waiting for people to tell me whether things were fixed, and telling what else was broke.
Good thing their college degree means they make 20% more than me.12 -
I just flashed BIOS on my server. I don't own a UPS, and i was only using 1 of the 2 PSU's since i couldn't find a second power cord.
Without a doubt the scariest 30 seconds I've ever experienced while working with IT1 -
Client: it's very important that we go live with the app's sign up process.
Me: ...but the mobile apps aren't complete yet.
Client: Yes, but marketing says we need to start getting downloads and sign-ups so we get better ratings than our competitors.
Me: ...but the user won't be able to do anything.
Client: We'll add the rest later when we have users!5 -
Fuck you you stupid fucking cock sucking power company.
I was fucking in the middle of optimising a class and the power goes out.
FUCK FUCK FUCK!!!
Why didn’t I press save 😂
Now to go find me a UPS for the rare times this occurs, before my phone dies.12 -
I finally slept through the night. I have so many reports to do, and so many follow ups, but I got more than 3 hours of sleep.4

South Africa Electricity:
This is after I lost my 7th 3000VA online UPS...
In South Africa we have 240V power most of the time which is great, but then there is scheduled power outages (because our electricity companies cannot "handle the load").
When we have a power outage we have automatic generators which brings everything back up although there is still the 1 minute drop which has weird spikes and odd voltages before switching to the generator (as the generators wait until they are stable)
This has being destroying our equipment, we had a $2000 repair bill 3 TIMES for 3 SEPERATE Xerox Machines that have surge protectors although their circuit board somehow fried.
We have lost 7 3000VA UPSes (3 different brands) and 5 voltage regulators we put to protect the UPSes.
The one UPS that fried just had 2 dead fuses, I decided to replace them (unplugged the batteries to avoid 240V) and when plugging the batteries back in there was a huge spark and flame and the metal and plastic melted onto the board and turned black (the metal pins to connect the battery are non existant now)
I am done with electricity...
P.S. 2 of our generators also got hit by lightning as we are high on a hill and ALL the plastic cable coverings inside the generator were melted14 -
Waiting for the perfect browser :
1. It's not Safari or IE and without their shitty problems.
2. It's not a RAM gobbler like Chrome. But has its minimal UI.
3. Has Chrome like dev tools or Firebug and nothing less than those.
4. Does not have ads.
5. Cross platform. On both desktop and mobile.
6. Web extensions only
7. Everyone loves it. Even fanboys who swear by Safari
8. Blocks annoying pop ups on some sites.
You're open to contribute more points!35 -
Am I the only one who hates meet-ups and networking events? We were supposed to be introverted geeks!6

The more I visit a wide range of sites, the more I hate obnoxious cookie policy pop ups. The ones that take 2/3 are UN-FUCKING-NECESSARY.
Web devs that make them like this can you please tell me why?12 -

For goodness fucking sake Microsoft. Stop doing everything possible to get me to use Edge Browser.
Since building my new computer I've had edge recommended in the notification center, lock screen, start screen, emails, and now on my fucking taskbar.
Seriously what the hell is wrong with them, I DONT WANT TO USE THEIR SHITTY BROWSER. I wont use their shitty browser so stop recommending it to me. I'm already invested In Google services so stop trying to push your own on me.
Honest to God what do the higher ups at Microsoft do with their time? Sit around a table figuring out how to get people to use their default apps?14 -
during code review...
peer: "you should pass this variable, and extract the logger from it"
me: "why? it is a 3 line logging function. why not pass the logger instance?"
peer: "because that is our best practice. It is the way we do things"
me: "why is it a best practice?"
peer: "because it is. We use it everywhere!"
me: "No we don't. And I still don't understand why is this a best practice. can you explain?"
peer: gives ups, did not look at the mr, and was not going to.
mr stays open. probably forever.11 -
Fucking surprise payment pop-ups in apps!
I've just accidentally bought an app, because it randomly showed the "buy pro version" pop up...9 -
People are incredibly rude and ill mannered.
New company stories.
Whenever I am in office and having a conversation with a person, someone randomly appears (like those annoying pop-ups on websites) and interrupts the conversation and starts with their own.
I don't understand why people don't wait for the conversation to be over, or ask for permission (in case it is urgent).
Such behaviour derails the entire thought process and breaks the rhythm.
It's just beyond me. How difficult it can be!!!17 -
A pm once told me that the whole point of managing someone was to give them the stuff you don't want to do.
From that project I learned that he didn't like to take responsibility for his own fuck ups.1 -
I had a meeting today with some high level technical executives from IBM and I showed them our architecture and they were impressed and said it was rare that they saw start-ups with such great architecture. As a dev with no formal education and one year experience this makes me so proud and also very proud of my team2
-
To incentivise myself to get fit, I decided to do push-ups/sit-ups whilst my code compiles
All that happened though is I now spend a lot more time making sure my code compiles quickly 😅5 -
A silent, convincing murderous stare when "there are sudden new requirements for tomorrow get to it chop-chop" goes a long way
But only in small companies or start ups where they know it's in their best interests not to aggravate their only webdev too much.1 -

The ups and downs of a corporate database developer job:
Ups: Great pay and benefits, advancement opportunities, job security.
Downs: Windows 7, Office 2012, Oracle DB 11 release 1 (2008)... not exactly a cutting edge environment.2 -
Worst: Getting fired for talking too much shit about how the higher ups don’t know how to run a company.
Best: Getting hired at a way less stressful job that pays 50% more and realizing the last place was toxic as fuck.9 -
UPS maintenance today in server room...they said nothing is gonna happen..30 minutes later massive blackout and some servers refuse to start...welp there goes my fukin weekend1

I swear upon the gods of the internet! Any time I am trying to read an article/blog post/anything and the site puts a god damn pop-up form asking me to sign up for something, I leave the site. ESPECIALLY ON MOBILE WHEN YOU CANT CLOSE THE DAMN WINDOW WITHOUT GIVING UP YOUR INFO.
And every time a client asks me to do this I nicely explain how much people hate pop-ups, 99% of the time I've closed the window or tab before I even read what the box is asking for, I don't care.
If the user is trying to read something, then they are trying to read something, and they don't want to be bothered with your ridiculous attempts for information gathering so you can spam them later.10 -
We were participating in a competition once where our project was an accident detection sensor (it was a business competition). We took a broken mp3 player without cover and used it as the device while our laptop played sensor sounds.
We were the runner ups3 -
Holy shit.
I went to uninstall Adobe Acrobat because our organization uses another PDF reader and now I keep getting annoying pop-ups from Adobe like "update failed" and "license expired".
This PDF READER... USES 7.1 GIGABYTES OF STORAGE.
We talk about Video games being bloated today but HOLY FUCK. This is literally JUST A PDF READER WHAT THE FUCK.
Can't do screenshot cus work PC.19 -
I'm a backend (Java, Kotlin) developer and I mainly design & develop services and Android apps which consume these services.
My team in my current organization (I've been working here since past 2 years) just got merged with another team.
And now the new boss wants me to fix some fuck ups in their project which is written in C#, with some WCF and other stuff.
As this stuff is completely new for me, I asked for some time to get familiar with the environment. But the answer was a big NO.
As a result, "I've started looking out for a new job"
😡😠
Fuckin management screws up everything!4 -
Hi all, first rant.
I work on an app on the Shopify platform, which requires me to look at the front end of people’s Shopify stores about half the day.
Can we PLEASE get the Shopify devs together and convince them to put a hard limit on the number of pop ups and slide ins and modal apps a single store can have running??? When a user (or app developer) can’t click on a product to buy it (or test installation) because ‘spin the wheel’ and ‘join the mailing list’ and ‘Karen in Ohio just bought a toaster’ won’t stop popping into the view, your UX is shit.
I realize people could still actually go in and build these things into their store code - but I’m willing to bet VERY few would.
Thanks - rant over.2 -
Well today we got to test our system to the extreme and I'm pleased to say it passed. Major power surge followed by a black out. UPS for all networking and servers kicked in without missing a beat and the standby generator outside about 45 seconds later. After explaining to users how to turn on their computer (😑), we were able to get everyone working again in about 5 minutes. Lasted three hours without power from the grid without any client downtime1
-
pms always tell the higher ups that I"don't have passion". I don't know how to show passion for their photoshop mock ups, one line requirements with no definition of done, their talking for hours about "leveraging" and name dropping about the top brass they are schmoozing with. I just ask if we are going to show our MVP to real users and she morphs to the bride of chuckie. I say we ought to pair program and she says it cost double to make a feature. Testing and code reviews are taking too much time but they hover over your shoulder while you try to fix a "mission critical bug" that occurs because they wanted us to skip practices that could have prevented the bug. Woo I feel better now!2
-
Start-ups and corporations trying new things be like:
"Why should we pay a developer or a company to develop this and this for us when we can just:
- start a competition.
- get free design mockups and code.
- decide which is better.
- reward a small prize and maybe some freebies to the competitors.
- profit. FREE CHEAP CODE AND DESIGNS!!!"
It might be the reasonable and logical thing to do from a business standpoint if its about code you need to rarely maintain..
But from an independent developer viewpoint - FUCK YOU AND THE SLOW ENSLAVEMENT OF MY SPECIE!!!3 -
Fuck sake, so my bank has been migrating/rolling out new IT system and app/site have been broken for about a week (others noted evidence of devs debugging in production)
Assuming I don't lose my money as some mischievous assholes will inevitably exploit the fuck up, and rob the bank, I will be moving my funds to a different bank...
In mean time I'm trying to prepare for uni, and they're making a ton of semi-random changes in addition to rolling out a site with course details and info along those line, and good fucking god is it bad.
Is is slow as fuck? Check. Does it use never-seen-before naming for standard things? Check! Is the UI pulled from late 90's? YOOU BETCHA! Are the pages bloated with unnecessary content? Fuck yeah! Do I get SQL exceptions when I finally locate my course? Of course I do. Does clicking "back" take me back to the landing page instead of previous page, when I'm several steps deep? .....
I could keep going, but don't feel like ranting and feel more like punching someone in the throat.repeatedly. -
'We are a fast paced team where you will have a lot of opportunity for growth'
Do you sponsor conference tickets?
No
Can I get some programming books?
No
Do I get chance to goto meet ups?
If you can meet the deadlines and have free time.
... How am I supposed to learn then?
STACKOVERFLOW -
Had meeting with higher ups.
Higher ups sad work hasn't progressed as much as they want.
I look at my calendar.
Barely 15 mins free for the day for a small washroom break7 -
At this point, I just feel bad for my coworker.
No, I am not frustrated or angry, just feeling terribly bad for her as how difficult life must be for someone so dumb.
We are introducing a new method to track some data in our product, like total number of sign-ups, DAU, etc.
Now the implementation is already WIP and this is known to all.
The dev has documented the approach where he has mapped the screen name, a screenshot, and a snippet of the schema that tracks that particular screen.
I kid you not guys, this coworker somehow landed on that document and started some scientific study to try and extract data.
Yes, she looked at the schema screenshot and spent like few hours trying to decode it to figure out the sign-ups and DAU.
Data via a screenshot in a document. I can't even express it.
And then texts me in panic mode that she isn't able to access the data because the file is . jpeg within a document.
I asked where is she executing the schema, because I thought she is joking initially. She said she doesn't know and asked me where she should execute it.
My mind is numb. Life must be real hard when you are so fucking dumb.19 -
Man, my product owner is so fucking annoying. I am 50/50 between two projects when really it feels like I'm 100/100 - and the PO of one of the projects always requests that I join daily stand ups and give updates.
CUNT.
I don't always have updates because I'm working with another team. Why are you trying to micromanage me you fuck face. Also, you know when you get those PO's that are totally useless and don't actually bring any real value to the project except in the capacity of being a slimey charismatic weasel? Yah, that's this person.5 -
So my grandma just called me saying that there is something wrong with the computer and the UPS is making a weird noise. When I went to find out what's going on, the UPS was beeping constantly and the computer was in the middle of a startup repair. Obviously there is no way to cancel the repair, and unplugging the UPS would probably do more harm to the computer. So we had to listen to that constant, loud, high-pitch noise while waiting for the startup repair to complete. And mind you, I'm talking about a very old and slow computer with windows 7 on it. After the repair was done, I quickly turned off the computer so I can reset the UPS and save my eardrums from burning in hell.
The worst thing is that I've downloaded the documentation of the UPS, and there was no mention of what a constant beeping means, it only described the meanings of normal beeping patterns (battery low, etc...).
My eyes are still ringing and my ears are still blurry from 20 minutes of that noise.4 -
So, idiot me decided it would be a good idea to never get around to configuring my UPS to gracefully shutdown my server after a powercut lasting more than x duration...
Long story short, we had a powercut that lasted 4 minutes or so longer than the battery in the UPS could keep the server up for...
UPS died, server went pew, and after rebooting itself once the power came back on, my raid array wouldn’t mount anymore...
After Googling around, it seemed like running e2fsck would solve the problem.
Didn’t seem to do the trick... and tired me at 3am decided it would be a good idea to poke around.
Pretty sure I ran a command wrong, or two, because now I can’t even mount the fricken array in read only, and fsck complains with a shit ton errors...
Been researching for hours, and no dice...
Test Disk shows the ext4 partition, but fails to list any files...
I may have destroyed the tables or something... I’m a noob at this point.
I’m able to access files with the RStudio tool, however this doesn’t help with file names and directory structure 😭
Is it all over for my 5 years worth of photos and other bits and pieces that I don’t have any backups of ? 😂😭😭
If any of y’all are pros with data recovery and can help a fellow boi out, I’d be more than happy to pay for ya time !2 -
Was in a meeting today when it was announced by some higher ups that everyone but me can now leave. After it was just me and some higher ups they began to praise my work and congratulate me for being 2 days ahead of schedule. Before I realised what my mouth was doing, I'd said "two days ... so far"5
-
My process (still going on):
*Pick a topic/language/anything.
*Read up as much as I can until my eyes start glazing over.
*Try to implement something.
*Screw up.
*Feel bad. Repeat until screw-ups reasonably reduced.
*Success???2 -
So I walk up to my desk, join the zoom meeting for daily stand ups, and then join the other meeting scheduled by the CEO. And I watched a presentation built around how I'll be fired in the next few minutes. My colleagues and I got laid off in the snap of a finger.
Sad much8 -
I get it, Unreal Engine's Blueprints are for quick mock ups, but man, that shit is really complicated, more than coding the same thing on C++.
God, I'm frustrated with that, then the "boss" decided to do an "online survival medieval rpg" game, seriously?
Don't you think that it will fail? LIKE THE THOUSANDS BEFORE?
At least I'm getting experience ¯\_(ツ)_/¯1 -
Fuck jQuery. The only reason I see anyone using it legitemately is because of backwards compatibility. Almost every jq method is either native js or native css. The problem is, some devs become practically dependent on a library. By then, they are no longer js devs. They are jQuery devs. When you find yourself going to the docs of a lib before native methods 9 times out of 10 you've gone past the turning point. When you find yourself including jQuery instinctively, you're gone. StackOverflow is a great example of this:
Question - 1 up
Pure JS answer - 0 ups
jQuery answer (same length) - 2 ups and accepted
Come on man. It's 2018! We shouldn't be writing jQuery anymore. Native methods ftw!15 -
There are people who quit coding cause of errors and stuck ups. But there are these special others, who work on Saturday, smash their keyboards on the desk and say FUCK IT.4

Baaaahhhhh!!! I just stepped on my UPS power button and killed my machine after spending considerable time working out the plan for a new tool to add to our system.5

Everyone is remote working and executives keep telling non-technical to push their communications into shared channels in Microsoft Teams.
It forces analysts and managers to ask questions plainly. They are getting developer input quickly so aren’t wasting time on in-person meetings. The higher ups see how little many produce. Developers are busy churning out software as usual and responding to technical questions.
Our CEO said something in a channel that suggested he is considering downsizing the management and adding more developers. 😱 The response was that analysts and managers packed the developer schedules with online meetings and are trying to initiate more documentation work.3 -
I just tried doing some situps and push-ups...
Guess how many I could do?
TLDR: I may have found the root cause of some problems...
Any tips on how to go from belly fat to normal/fit?21 -
Just a reminder, services like Google Photos are not a backup.
Want to lose nearly three years of photos?
Use Google Photos and do not keep offline back ups of your photos / Takeout archives.4 -
I finally decided to switch to Linux (I still have Windows for work, but I want to give Linux a try too). I was about to complete the installation (Arch Linux so I was quite tired and stressed cause of fuck ups) when BOOM my fucking phone with the installation guide falls on my laptop's power button and powers it off. Fuuuuuuuuuuuckkkk. I have to do everything again. Shit.4

Question for all senior developers / lead developers / higher ups out there.
If you were looking for a job, and this company that you applied for which specifically stated that they are looking for a senior developer on the job listing page, asks you to be a junior developer for a few months to prove yourself, would you still be interested in working for that company?22 -
*meeting on Monday*
Client: so I've got this project I want you to do, it's simple right?
Me: seems so
Client: so I'll pay you this much because it's so simple
Me: uhhhhhhhh
Underpaying client: I also told my higher ups that you'd be done by Friday you can do that yeah
Me: ..................2 -
Back where I used to work, we had this a-hole call center guy who isn't a programmer but got promoted as our team leader. He said he used to program on his early days at the company (?) . He claims that made back-ups of his source code in MS Word and even tries to gives us a lecture about backing up programs.
I really hate those a-wipes who often get promoted and suddenly goes up to their headsjoke/meme that guy ms word programming meme douchebaggery douchebag fake programmer testicular capacities7 -
So I'm in charge of planning how the projects are gonna be dealt with from now on and today my boss just emailed a list of changes to another dev, with the following fuck ups:
- I'm not copied
- He already did most of it
- It doesn't even exists on our Trello board
- Obviously not thought out and unplanned Bullshits that might change once again...
I was so fucking pissed that I didn't have a reaction, I'm absolutely gonna talk to him tomorrow first thing...2 -
A semiconductor company wants a custom desktop program to graph the data from their machines.
Company: We want to get a trial version before buying it.
Me: *Just staring at them*
In my mind: Soooooo you want me to invest my time in creating a custom made software specific to your machines and you might end up being happy with a trial version and leaving me empty handed?
Might as well create the program and put so many pop ups to annoy them no? 😂😂😂5 -
One of the higher ups just sent me a message on my private phone number after 10pm asking if we could discuss something work related. I'm a working student, leave me alone.5

To my dear friends complaining about GDPR, if companies providing free services in exchange for users data didn't fuck up completely, there wouldn't be any GDPR. In history, regulations always come after people fuck ups, uncle Bob has some nice talks about that.1

When your mobile app has like 5 analytics frameworks because the higher ups need "the best analytics data"...4

We spent a lot of time creating these CSS animated pop-ups that described parts of the product. They looked great, but the client called and said they were "flickering" on her computer. We debugged and could not for the life of us figure out what she meant by flicker. The code was so simple that we couldn't imagine how it could be flickering. It was just a jQuery fadeIn(). It worked fine for us in every browser we tried. So we just gave up. The next day, the client called back and said,"Hey, it looks great. You fixed the flickering. How did you do it?" And our dev replied, "Uh, we set the flicker to 0".6

Perk of being a web developer.
When a website tries to hide its content behind a pop-up become I have an ad-blocker. I can "display:none" that stuff away.4 -
If you have daily stand ups, don't let participants choose who speaks - we seem to spend 5 minutes of the 15 with people saying "no you go first".2

After the whole Asus issue, my ThinkPad finally arrived. Finally (after about a week being held by UPS) Time to pick some stickers to put on this thing.7

One of the most underrated boost of morale in a workplace is giving credits and making acknowledgements.
Most higher-ups suck at this! -
I fucking swear the power goes out in my small ass town once a week. Every fucking time it knocks my servers offline. I’m about to sue the fucking power company. This is fucking ridiculous.
Yes they are on UPS, they were also on backup power until the fucking maintenance guys decided “on they don’t need on the generator...” you fucking cunt!2 -
I've lost hope in my precision at this point:
We've updated our website to have X feature. The X feature was implemented, tested and even had unit tests... The worst part when I've lost hope? Both unit and the actual code had the same mistake in them. What was the mistake? Well...
if($variable = 'something') {}
Yeah... Read it carefully... We've always had the same case and only noticed it after 3 months when it was attempted to extend.
Funny enough, few users were harmed but no actual reports of an issue came to us.
Since then, I'm always triple checking that I have the correct amount of `=` to avoid further fuck-ups8 -
When that shit start up reject you and instead of being polite you pull their shit app apart at the seams.2

If I was doing push-ups during Visual Studio's loading times, I wouldn't be able to walk through doors with those arms after one fucking week.1

Before 2012, I always worked in cubicles and had weekly status meetings. In 2012 I moved to a big city and learnt there was something worse than cubes: the open work plan. Marketed as a way to increase coloration, the open work space is really just the result of real estate prices being expensive in cities and how desks are cheaper than 3-cube walls.
Up until 2013, we'd usually just have the weekly status meeting. Here are your tasks for the week. I'd do them at my own pace. Some days fast, some days slow, but they'd all get done by the end of the week and I'd proudly go down my list of stuff I had done.
Since then, it's all been "agile" and "stand-ups" every. fucking. day. The work is endless. A Product Owner once told me that stand ups weren't suppose to be status meetings; that you were only suppose to say if you're blocked or need help. But in every place I've worked at, they're daily status reports. You have to preform every day.
I really hate IT today more than ever. I miss the cube. I miss the weekly status reports. Today things are so high stress and higher paced and the work is endless. You can't even really pace yourself anymore.1 -
Please take note : I don't want a "subscribe to our newsletter" pop-up to cover the entire fucking screen whenever I visit your website; nor do I want that damn video to auto-play.4
-
I think I just gave my teammates/boss another mind-blowing idea...
Daily stand-ups are usually done standing up... Which means away from computers... And therefore JIRAs should not be mentioned, at least not by ID...
WHO THE FUCK CAN REMEMBER THEIR ISSUE IDS ALONG WITH EVERYONE ELSE'S...11 -

I am pretty new to devrant.. and Tomorrow is my first official joining in a MNC as Android Dev... I have done many work in start-ups as intern..But feeling scared for tommorow... Hope for the best.. 😕2

Why do CEOs and higher ups always think development is just some easy quick thing you can spit out in a week? {
"I need a web app that can do X and I want to sell it to make more money!"
} or {
"I want something that can automate this thing here and then I can re-sell it!"
}
Usually, the project is something that already exists and has taken a whole team years to iron out and perfect and to compete with it would be insane or it exists and it's actually FOSS. We're a small MSP, we don't have the resources to make big ticket SELLABLE software.6 -
Soon to finish my CompSci degree and already have been invited to relatives for dinner... And IT-support...
(They had statically set their NAS to the same IP as the router and lost it)
I guess its time to prepare for the onslaught of screw-ups I'll be asked to fix.5 -
TLDR;
When governments started printing money to cure new pandemic and crash current market with great inflation I took all my savings, got a loan and bought biggest property I could afford. Every major news station was talking about end of world, but this was not I was scared of. I was scared of the helicopter money that would wipe my 5 years old savings.
When I was about to sign loan papers to buy my first apartment I got an email that my contract will end in 3 months. I said ok, the contractor company will find me something else.
I asked and they assured me they will do it. After my contract end just before summer holidays there was silence from contracting company and then after 5 years of me earning them piles of money, after finished project and congratulations from customer they offered me most shitty job they had where people resign after a week. I said I don’t want to land in another shit hole bring it back to life for another 2-5 years and kill myself when they offer me same shit afterwards so I resigned.
It was so fucked up that even the boss from the client I was contracting asked me if I lost my job cause I finished all that they wanted. I said it’s not your fault man. I will be ok, but I wasn’t.
I had apartment I couldn’t move in cause I needed to renovate. Loan I needed to pay. Rented apartment, accountant and business that was loosing money cause I was without contract, the world was locked down and everyone was depressed.
I said ok, I still have some savings left so I I started looking for something new but market was dead. Everyone was gone for holidays after winter lockdown. I was burning money and trying to figure out what to do.
After 2 months of nothing, when I started thinking about finding some temporary job to not loose everything I worked for, things moved. I started attending hiring meetings and solving tests everyday, also from big four gang but I didn’t passed trough hr due to how they say I’m to independent and I need to look for consulting business or do something on my own.
People asked why I don’t do something on my own and I politely answered that I want to work there.
I was about to run out of money when I got a call that company is looking for me cause I was doing similar things they want to do. During interviews it was pleasant small talk about what id did over those years and what they want to do, 2 days later I joined small team. I barely managed to survive a month for a first paycheck.
Since then we created new product for a company. Now the person who hired me is leaving and I think I should also leave the ship and find other things to do.2 -
What bothers me here in that delicious and excellent community:
Why I am the fucking last person who is able to rant about anything? 🤯
My life as a dev has its ups and downs, but nothing really worth a rant! 🤔3 -
Someone blocked access to AWS RDS database and for the past few weeks I can't access the database from my machine when connected to our company network.
Created support ticket to internal IT team and someone closed the ticket. I re-opened the ticket and in the comment someone wrote "Their team doesn't handle AWS access".,
Wrote email to the director of infrastructure and that asshole replied to me asking some questions and after that his been ghosting me for past 2 weeks.
I'm tired and I don't have energy to do any more follow ups.3 -
Wish you all a Happy New Year! Being a part of this community has made me feel a sense of belonging and that I'm a part of something bigger! Seeing all your fuck ups made me feel better that in not the only one, seeing all your accomplishments motivated me to achieve more in life! I would like to take this moment to thank you all and to make me feel proud of being a dev! I wish you all an amazing new year and may you all get whatever you wish this new year!
-
Can’t wait for the next year to be attacked by pop-ups asking me if I agree with the site using cookies. Now more than ever, because everybody cares about cookies, and it’s totally not going to ruin the user experience.
I can’t wait for another law that will force sites to ask users if they agree with usage of JavaScript.4 -
Are there going to be anymore devRant meet-ups elsewhere in the US? I live in the South if there are any other developers in the area!10
-
I like our daily stand-ups, but our team only does it when our scrum master is present, if he takes a day off, no one cares about it
I think it's healthy for scrum teams to have that every day
What do you guys think? Are you also doing scrum? How bug is your team?6 -
Don't you just hate it when your company's lead developer has so bad imposter syndrome, that he can't actually produce anything even moderately complex. Then it's you who has to fix his fuck-ups..I really need a raise.. :)

Fuck start ups with large projects with no continous integration setup on git... and very many junior devs including the CTO(Not even a googling guru).... for fucks sake we cant deliver spaghettis as iF we are coding a restauRANT... fuck this shit load of a project....4

Today a co-worker (I am going to call him 'boss') ask to another co-worker (I am goin to call it 'useless piece of shit' or 'ups') to explain to me a new task, becaus boss was to bussy with a new release for a client.
Idk how but ups managed to explain all wrong, like terribly wrong.
Ups: "Dev, all you have to do is fix some queries from local files"
Dev: "Ok, seems legit"
Try the local files, nothing happend
Dev: "weird... ups why this is happening?"
Ups: "I know the same as you, ask boss."
Dev: "boss this."
Boss: "what the actual what? ... this is all wrong. The config file is in mongo, in this IP, we don't use local files anymore. I tell ups to explain this to you so I can atay focused on this other task, but now I lost the double amount of time"
Dev: "oh... sorry, I will fix the remote queries"
I hate ups, every fucking time soneone need something from him this happend or worst...1 -
Got a new team and teammember who has been here for years seemed not so happy having me now as lead. No problem, i even can understand him a bit. Still, if you have a f***** problem there are better times to address them then every f***** time at stand-ups. -.-8
-
"Help" messages that are only shown once are not so helphul.
Some software and websites have help pop-ups and tooltips that are only displayed on the first use and then never again. There is no option to show it again.
That is a terrible idea, because the user might want to see it again as a reminder.
Showing something to the user only once means expecting the user to memorize it all at once.9 -

I just want to thank you each and every member of devRant to be there through my thick and thin. That's all. I could find any other safe community to share my ups and downs...So thank you everyone and thank you David and Trogus for making this amazing app and website. Love you all <3.1 -
Every thought of using developer-related stuff in your home? When I get married I plan to have a private family slack workspace and Trello board and everyone gives stand-ups.5

Hi everyone, I've a desktop and in my area power cut is quite frequent. Although we've backup power, but sometimes it takes ~15 mins to come back.
Is UPS only option for desktops? Laptops nowadays have so long battery power, why there is no good option for desktops. UPS usually stays for 5 mins. Could you please suggest something better, as I've seen lots of desktops in posts? Thanks.10 -
Prepared for one of the best start ups around me. Able to make it in my second chance. Answered some of the most difficult questions asked in the interviews.
Now when it's about the salary, they are giving me a nominal hike.
I mean seriously, my days and nights for this.
Height of frustration when I'm trying to switch for a year now.5 -
bought a cdp ups, because energy service can be shitty in the town I live.
Everything is fine and dandy with the ups, has a nice lcd but it also has a usb cable and dvd with a so called "upsilon 2000" software. One week after buying the ups I decided to venture with the mother fucker software.
Installed the software, looks awful, like a software that made his way from the 90s to this day... it doesn't show the ups... I left it like that... nothing unsual, then my fucking curiosity picked up and I look into the software options and here you go, changed the "communication type" from serial to usb, and ups was recognized, and even nicer, windows started showing a battery icon like if this desktop was a laptop. I was thrilled... until I restarted my pc for whatever reason
gpu decided to break, like if the drivers weren't installed, was laggy, my second screen didn't work, in device manager the video adapter was shown as "generic video adapter". 😡, immediately I blame nvidia cuz I just updated those drivers the day before.
So I started my journey to get the fucking video card working as it should again. installed DDU, reinstalled newest drivers again... didn't work, used ddu again, installed last known drivers again... didn't work, used ddu, installed drivers from windows update... nothing... after some panicking time, I remembered that besides from updating the nvidia drivers I installed that upsilon shit recently... So I decided to uninstall it, and that was the fix, fucking shady software.
It was very naive from me to not blame that upsilon before blaming everything else.3 -
I'm not perfect. I've made fuckups. But most of the fuck ups I've made have been in unimportant code that wasn't used by anyone (part of the reason I'm not super happy with my job but whatever). But I've just found a fuckup that was in code that did matter...4
-
After hassling and saying all the benefits of Linux finally we agreed that she'd give Linux a go on her old laptop and after all the set ups she changes the background picture to windows xp's landscape just to feel good. Change never comes with some people.
-
Do you guys also feel annoyed when someone calls you during work hours out of the blue before asking if you're available? I just lose all my concentration
I have a rule of thumb that I always ask if the other person is available before I call, but this doesn't seem to be very common amongst the higher ups...1 -
Thank to this UPS driver ... i'm not going to get my package (laptop screen) until Monday evening.
Express Priority shipping $35.xx or whatever that is down the drain.
Never had this issue with Fedex and 100's packages delivered.
This ends the rant.3 -
lol @ doing stand-ups for the sake of stand-ups. I used to work for a company that vigorously applied them. Bro, I don't care about your development progress. You're wasting my time with your bla bla. Bunch of people just standing there rattling out their daily progress.. but no one really caring. Not useful.
lol..10 -
this happened to me the other day and ever since any UPS we set in that room fries itself ... mysterious .... maybe the volage on the plug it wrong
-
What's your view on workplace relationships or hook ups? 😄
(Sticking an RJ45 in your pooper doesn't count btw.)9 -
I saw a recruiter rant on linked in where they can't figure out why candidates won't give out current salary or they won't represent. If you have been working in and learning hot technologies in your current job but you know you can earn more why would you want to be represented at the lowest possible rate? I say give them an acceptable salary range not current rate. I am seeing why devs are moving toward meet ups and networking to get decent work.1

I really wish to live in the 80s era. I guess i was born in the wrong timeline. Watching the footage and movies of that time really makes me think yall lived a far more enriching life while half of us genz scroll our life away on these fucking apps.
Also not being rich wasn't a problem as much as it is now with all the social media narcissism that is normalized with every other joe and joess labelling their puberty as some earth shattering transformation and posting all these glow ups with filters that make em look unreal and stupid shit18 -

6hours of developing an android app and with ups and downs and I have done everything i wanted for today. Looking forward for the finishing touches Tomorrow.
As always, blessed be Google and Stackoverflow and good night1 -
Female lead PM told me to another field to a already overcrowded screen, I slipped out the phrase: "Another one? It's already tighter than a Virgin just not as wet...."
Guess I just figured out why I didn't get a raise this year.3 -
When a Google image search on your company name turns up more images of "ME" than the co-founders... Amazing feeling... One of the perks of working in start ups...2

After the anniversary update and guess what!!! this window does resize, cropping out the rest of the text. 😂 I'll keep you'll posted on what fuck ups to look forward to!5

Teacher asks me to join him for a web app development.
First stages, I have to dig deep into a framework I don't know (He doesn't know it too, and I know that learning is the only way to step through)
Month goes by, began developing some mock-ups, he says he didn't like it, sends me a website made in fucking Wix. Seriously?
Fast forward another month, tonight I'm coding some stuff, he stills doesn't know how to fucking use Yii. fml4 -
we were learning algorithm in college.
teacher: this is that and that is this, now when writing program we are not going to declare variables like a,b,c
me: omg, finally a teacher with same wavelength
teacher: we are grown ups, we will declare them as x,y,z
me: controlling my laughter with all the strength i had
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 -
When you come back from work after filling up jira, talking with colleagues during too long stand ups and writing documentation it's time to finally sit down and write some pure code.
-
Daily stand-ups might seem like a joke when done remotely, but I believe they help unite the team, and they play a key role for project managers, even if they're brief. The bigger issue might be just some of the dev's attitude towards it, and the lack of communication through out the project development.4
-
Fuck UPS and their API Documentation. Has anyone here ever integrated their API ?
Their API documentation doesn't mention any sandbox or testing accounts.
If I click on their create access key button, it takes me to a form which requires a real payment method and address which seems like it's meant for real stuff not testing.4 -
I often ask my colleagues about their mess ups on the job and that, to me, says a lot about them.
See, we devs have this unspoken rule between us (in my opinion) that we don't discuss our screw-ups whether it's the resume, the interview or at the job.
Are you really telling me that you've worked 5+ years in software industry and never messed up ONCE? Or were/are you in a position where you screwing up wouldn't create a dent for your team processes?
I can trust a dev more, who admits their screw ups because I know they have learned a valuable lesson and they are accountable for their actions.5 -
Been over 6 weeks since I was promised the devrant stickers for a post with >20 ups. Didn't get them yet and I am really stressed, so I need a stress ball now.
:'(2 -
TLDR: I've become what I used to hate (without actually knowing it).
I used to hate large companies and their way of working (bureaucracy and stuff). I always thought that I'd work for start-ups, until I started developing my own stuff after work cause now I have to work 9-5 instead of the 9-inf before. Well, it was nice sharing this. When I started working here I thought I would not be able to handle it. But it seems nice so far.
Cheers everyone.1 -
the current ERP software i test has a function that, when you dont have the USB dongle plugged in, it will annoy the workflow with a popup where you have to solve simple math stuff. (Like 2041+949). I am kinda inclined to write a small programm that insta solves those pop ups.
I must note, this is a weird way of licence management.1 -
FUCK UPS. Fucking dickheads killed our XML api a month ahead of schedule, and now I'm having to quickly implement stuff for their new api, and their docs are fucking dogshit. Seriously, the united parcel service can burn to death in a god damn fire.1
-
wk8 responses so far have been WEAK.
Most of them follow the format:
I did <some minor mistake> but fortunately I was able to <make a quick fix> within <short period of time> so everything turned out ok.
Come on guys, where are the REAL fuck ups? The ones that got you fired/permanently banned from the company?4 -
Dev work estimation is harder when the higher ups gives you a one line jira description and expect you to provide them with a timeline. Like how many times i gotta send the ticket back up the pipeline ><1
-
I'm generally new to front end development, couldn't keep up with the eco system even if I wanted to.
But what the fuck am I supposed to do when UX gives me mock ups in absolute units of pixels?
I thought best practice was for development was like vw viewport units of em units, because of the wrinkle of supporting different screen sizes and devices.
Is the general industry practice I'm supposed to use their general ratios and just get close enough? Like I don't want to dick around for diminishing returns trying to get shit pixel perfect, I don't have an eye for this shit to begin with.6 -
Ask to get DB back ups done, contact DB team => cant log in => have 2 contact wintel team => they believe a reboot will sort it => contact customer => permission to bounce given => contact team to bounce => shifted back onto DB team => bd team open lync conversation about bouncing => no reply to mails if all is well in the world => sit at desk cant start dev cuz know will be sucked into aroganizing this brewery piss up with a bunch of bums....... cue putting on headphones and blasting some music at 11 ,,,,,,,,,,,, been waiting to deploy for 4 hours !!! Was just (once again) nearly run over on a pedestrian crossing. This time by an angry-looking old fart in his pick-up. He probably didn't even see me, and he didn't react in any way when I swinged my fist at him and yelled "Maniac!". These angry-looking old farts in their pick-ups are far too common a sight in this country. Those old dung heads drive in their sleep, not seeing anything, not hearing anything and not caring shit about anything. Stop driving already, go to a retirement home and stay there!3

> client has no infrastructure of the project
> dev like me still work on it
> I constantly request for mock-ups and infrastructure
> client never responds back, instead he raises issues ahead of sprint
> I snap back at him
> Client wants call now
> What the fuck
To be honest, I'm gonna take a stand here...fuck this shit man, no clear way of working2 -
The biggest problem I see with current state of AI is the feedback loop it creates in people.
For example, some (usually older people in higher positions) perceive long emails as a sign of courtesy, involvement, and hard work. As a result, others have started using AI to write longer emails for them, to get on "the good side" with their higher ups. And now that many use AI to generate longer emails, those same higher ups got used to it and started to perceive short, straight-to-the-point emails as "rude". So even more people are looking into using AI to generate longer emails as they don't want to seem rude. At that rate it's not long until those that rely on AI to write "better" (== longer) emails get promoted over some hard working person who simply doesn't care to write long emails.
Even though AI didn't do anything, it somehow still "trained" people to start using it and even rely on it, and it even indirectly rewards people who use it for completely meaningless and seemingly unrelated tasks. And in a few years, whatever comes out of this will be used to train the next generations of AI, creating even more of a feedback loop that people will be completely unaware of until it eventually crashes onto itself. Because that loop can't be observed in the AI itself, it has to be observed in the people.4 -
After working for weeks writing sophisticated Scala code, and building à team of react devs working on this for months, these fuckers come to me with let's go the cms route. I would like to sincerely declare, fuck this company and I hope it crashes and burns. I know start-ups are constantly changing and iterating but this is straight up nonsense.8

If you start to get frustrated, take a break. Your brain has two modes of thinking: focused & diffuse. You can only utilize focused mode for a short time, and sometimes it's harder to look at the broader picture. Go take a walk, do some push-ups, or check devRant. You diffuse mode will make some connections when you're not even trying once you relax a little bit.5
-
Unfortunately, due to my recent decision to only connect with people I know, it means I get a lot of those “Do you know this person?” pop-ups when I hit ignore. And because I’m a lyric person, it also means every time I deal with someone I don’t know, my brain goes:
“I don’t know him!”
“Peter, don’t you know what you have saaaaaaid? You’ve gone and cuuuut him dead.” -
When I started using Ubuntu for the first time it took like 3 tries to install the OS. After successful installation, all it took was two days and I had somehow corrupted everything. Next time I managed to keep everything together a bit longer, maybe a few weeks. Now, multiple fresh OS installations later, I am happy to say that I have not conducted any major fuck-ups in years. It's the learning curve, yo.4

I hate every private package delivery service!
I ordered two things from the same shop. The first delivery came on Monday and because I wasn't home I got a notice which said I have to get the package from the pickup shop right around the corner. So far, so good.
Second delivery should come on Wednesday. I wasn't home again, so I got a notice to get the delivery from the pick up store....30 MINUTES AWAY!
Because the delivery should be quite heavy, I organized a friend with a car to help me.
At the pickup store I I got the package and it wasn't as heavy as I expected.
At home I opened the package and noticed that stuff is missing. In my order email a discovered, that there should be two package.
Slightly pissed off I drove back to the pickup store to get the other package, but it wasn't there.
Because the the delivery guy brought it to another pickup store...30 MINUTES AWAY IN THE OPOSITE DIRECTION OF MY HOME! WITHOUT A NOTICE!
And of course the shop was closed at this time :[
This wasn't the first time stuff like this happened with private delivery services. I cannot understand why people are ranting about the state postal service and prefer those private companys.3 -
Asus critical update! Fucking handwriting recognition... So they're now employing the same tactics as criminals trying to get you to install a virus.
"Whoa, critical? I'd better stop whatever I'm doing and update, I sure am grateful that they tabbed me out of whatever unimportant crap I was doing before and shoved this popup in my face!"
-no one, ever
That shit is about as critical as birth control to a nun. Kindly fuck off with your pop ups and go work on something actually critical like my battery not exploding 6 months after buying it. -
While the US is melting the fuck down around me...
Those in other countries, what is all this like to see?
I'm rather indifferent as the riots usually accomplish fuck all, just like peaceful protests, as they don't make higher-ups care at all, they're just annoying.46 -
When you spend 2 days debugging .Net code even though you're not a .Net developer because the higher ups think everyone should be language agnostic. Never though I'd hear myself longing to go back to JS.1
-
I’m worried my manager denies me my role shift because I’m supposedly an invaluable asset to our small team, even though the request has been approved by the higher ups already. I would totally understand, tbh, but it’d suck nonetheless.
I don’t consider myself ambitious, but I’d like to move forward, not just run in place.5 -
That moment when you realize that the annoying beeping sound I was hearing while dreaming was the sound of my server's UPS discharging itself because the power went out. I woke up to the electricity coming back not understanding what is happening 😂1
-
I think UPS' Api documentation and service must be the worst documented and build API I have ever seen from a corporate.
1. The developer website is a mess. A total mess. You can barely find the API type you are looking for.
2. When you get the API and download the documentation, the files, .pdf etc is still a mess. Pages long that most are craps.
3. Each request returns Status Code 200. Even if it is an error. This blew my mind.
4. Each request, based on error type or based on tracking activity returns different JSON schema.
For example, the JSON Schema for a shipment in transit is different from JSON schema for a shipment that has been delivered. A shipment that has been returned, a shipment that required signature etc. They are different from each other.
5. And the worst. They do not provide with test tracking codes. I have found some on internet, but they do not work in development and production environment.4 -
When the PM has been letting a fresh faced graduate loose on a codebase without any code reviews and you come back to some cronenburg level horror in your now crippled project. But it LOOKS like the mock ups.... * internal screaming *
-
Damn those 30+ mins long stand ups. A standup shouldn't last more than 10 mins. Discuss your detailed analysis of the project outside of the standup. 😤3
-
I hate unnecessary meetings. It is a waste of my productive time. Also I hate daily stand ups that becomes a regular meeting with question and answer portion lol
It is like they are lazy creating a separate meeting for specific concerns and just brings it up in the daily stand ups lol nice way of doing agile things lol1 -
Project Lead: The DevOps department just got a GitLab instance installed on our internal network. We're gradually going to move all our projects onto it and move away from BitBucket and Jenkins really soon.
Me: Awesome!
Project Lead: We're still using JIRA and Confluence for issue tracking and documentation though because the higher ups said so.
Me:1 -
I am so fucking sick of daily stand ups. What a fucking waste of my time, even if it’s only 15 minutes, it fucks up my workflow and is just generally fucking annoying13
-
So on January 16th I started building a web app python+flask
It's going along pretty good
But now I feel it needs a lil bit of that on the UI side like pop-ups etc
And wanted to ask more experienced devs out there
Which framework is better and easy to integrate with my app
→ Angular
→ JQuery
→ React
I've already downloaded books on all of these12 -
Victor Pelevin is an iconic Russian writer. I won't describe him here (5000 characters is not enough), I just say I think he's one of the greatest if not THE greatest modern author.
Here's the tea (sorry for my bad translation):
"Some of our illusions feel more real than other illusions. A kid is urinating in perfectly real toilet when he's sleeping, he hears a perfectly real sound confirming this, yet he's still unsure.
A grown up, mature man is different only because he also shit himself.
Grown ups have no doubt about reality, that doubt that helps the kid to get closer to the truth. But grown ups have 'scientific explanations' that toilet is real because there is sound of urine, and the sound of urine is real because toilet is made of ceramic, so because of it we all should be working 24/7.
To help grown ups wake up from this 'reality', death exists."2 -
Just completed a 24 hour hackathon at my school in which the 'best software' winner purely had mock ups of yet another mobile app and had no proof of concept. Meanwhile my team developed a scaling platform online that adapts to groups of user's trends to create optimal results.
I guess I keep misreading the definition of 'software' in the dictionary each morning. (RULE #8.2 - Software Engineers shall read the definition of the following phrases each morning excluding Saturday: software, heap, ego, scrum, algorithm, the documentation of C)4 -
So I've been getting a lot of attention from various companies ranging from small tech start ups, to big established companies. I've had a lot of interviews that all went really well! So some weeks passed, and I have no feed back from any companies, so I proceed. I eventually get an offer from one company that is really good. They day i accepted it, I received about 4 other offers from all the other companies! And I got about 5 interviews to now decline! Murphy's law at is cruellest!1
-
Colleagues of mine merge try/except:pass without my consent also I strongly argue over the fact that exceptions in python should never be passed silently. I feel my poor technical knowledge to be denied or ignored and it feels painful.
I don't even have the gutts to speak about it loudly - during stand ups - because I am afraid to get on my nerve that ppl don't listen to me plus quickly merge such awfuls snippets without listening to me.
I feel like I am struggling. What should I do?1 -
Looking for collab for making a dev portal just for Start-ups to collab with freshers and freelancers.6
-
What a fucking boring day.
I had a heated argument with a fellow colleague because he wants us to add a feature to a certain product for free. He thinks am so money minded as I was pressuring him to charge the feature but he's defending himself that we are just a start-up.
Am left wondering if I was wrong or if giving free stuff will pay our bills or should start-ups code some stuff for free.....4 -
That I'm responsible enough for people to just entrust shit to me and irresponsible enough to fuck up very important things for very stupid and easily avoidable reasons. Rarely enough to not happen a lot, but serious enough fuck-ups that it can't be considered inconsequential.
And when I tell people not to trust me with shit without supervision they refuse to believe me and think I'm just being self-deprecating. Bitch I'd accidentally let you die if that was a responsibility of mine, I have no brain, only butterflies.1 -
I'm so, so tired of stand-ups. We have JIRA, and basically all we do is read the board—ticket number, ETA, blockers. We've done some Slack stand-ups, but my managers insist we all be in the room to communicate the same shit we communicate very effectively on Slack.5
-
UPS website is a clusterfuck of bad design decisions.
I hate myself every time I have to use that piece of shit.
Someone literally went the extra mile to make it worse in any way possible.
I pray to God that person is not alive anymore.
Fuck them.4 -
Ups and downs in devLand.
Day started with a meeting with one client. Guys, getting told "thank you" and "I appreciate your help" feels so good. Nothing could bring me down.
Then I get an asshole making the same request that we already went over -__-
Seriously, how many emails do I have to send. Sigh. -
In my freshman year of college, I ran into a grouping of circular dependencies that were so intertwined it would have warranted a total rewrite. I spent 28 hours fixing it. I took over my dorms common area, had about 5 movies playing on repeat for background noise, and stayed in the same seat for the whole period.
It was rewarding, but also showed me how easily I can get tunnel vision on a task. Now that I've graduated and moved on to a real job, I have certain back ups to make sure I don't forget to eat or take my breaks. I almost got in trouble for not taking them when I first started. -
Dependency injection and RX java and all are cool.
But I like to do good object oriented programming.
And now there are kids in start ups who see devs doing good object oriented programming as retards.
Android as a platform provides everything that you need. Why abuse a simple app with all fancy stuff when you can accomplish stuff with simple oops which takes the same amount of time ?
Am I the one feeling this way ? -
I’m now in my third try at attempting to set up reasonably priced shipping for a small volume ecommerce website. First it was UPS which charged more to ship than the product was worth, and ended up just dropping it off at USPS for local purchasers. Then it was USPS but apparently I chose the wrong WooCommerce plugin because it’s meant for high volume (but doesn’t say so in the description). Now I have to get the plugin maker to swap it to Stamps.com and I have to set up a whole new account there and no idea if it’ll even work. FML.
-
Was doing some chill programing when all of a sudden we lose power in the entire fucking house! So not just a blown fuse or something, but looks like the entire street has it, so no telling when it'll be back on either -_- Also I reaaaallly need to buy a UPS for my server, this is happening way too fucking often.5
-
So I was wondering, there are so many rants about fellow devs here, do they get offended by the rants or try to learn from the fuck ups? :)6
-
I feel stupid when I have trouble calculating how big a UPS I need to keep my NAS from just dying during a power outage instead of safely powering off
Then I just dont bother getting one... and get pissed off next time it happens and the cycle continues
Now I have other stuff I'd want to get a UPS for too and the math is even worse for my tiny brain3 -
!rant
My family has been very supportive, but mostly ignorant about my journey to software development, and tolerant of all of my fuck-ups along the way.
Yet they don't dare to even think to know what I am doing, because every time they asked me, no matter how well I explained, they never got any of the intricate parts of software development.
They know I make software. They know about the usual stress that comes from organizing projects, planning, maintaining infrastructure, but to them, it's as if I build buildings or I'm like a single-man conveyor that creates cars. It makes sense, and they will never understand how I do it, and they don't care. -
I've been having blackouts a lot recently which kills my desktop so thinking I should buy a UPS specifically APC UPS Battery Backup & Surge Protector with USB Charger, 600VA, APC Back-UPS (BE600M1) https://amazon.com/dp/B01FWAZEIU/...
But not sure how I would maintain it/use it.
Basically it would replace the current per strip I'm using for PC and monitor?
I don't know though how long it would last for my gaming PC though. What is the 625? I need it to last at least 5 minutes so it can shutdown properly but it's a gaming desktop... So will it be enough. I don't know what the VA means... Also I have a 4K 27in monitor...
That and I'm a bit worried this thing blows up and starts a fire...16 -
Pull an all nighter and Fuck up my exercise schedule or have sleep and code tomorrow (imp and might take multiple nights and day).....
Such hard decisions, 50 pull ups is hard to do after an all nighter 😥1 -
Argument in the office today when the designers went rogue, ignoring the PM's agreed plan with the client and started mock-ups for what they thought would look better. Boiled down to "No. Just stop that and do what I asked, you're wasting your time." vs "No, we're doing this. I'm a designer, I know this will look better."
Anyone else had issues with designers trying to take charge?3 -
With so many websites having all these pop ups, there should be a new rule where browsers implement the GDPR check on the user side (once to keep a default option, and let the user decide if they want to allow the website or not specifically)
This way we could still have the same privacy and 99% less spam 😩12 -
Does anyone else here think the regulating and centralising of crypto currencies and tokens worrying?
It is slowly being bent to the will of the higher ups just like traditional fiat and they’re burying its fundamental altruistic design concept without providing and means for it to be assimilated into benefiting the daily lives of the masses an especially the unbanked.5 -
"This deal is an important step towards correcting a situation which has allowed a few companies to earn huge sums of money without properly remunerating the thousands of creatives and journalists whose work they depend on.
At the same time, this deal contains numerous provisions which will guarantee that the internet remains a space for free expression. These provisions were not in themselves necessary because the directive will not be creating any new rights for rights holders. Yet we listened to the concerns raised and chose to doubly guarantee the freedom of expression. The ‘meme’, the ‘gif’, the ‘snippet’ are now more protected than ever before.
I am also glad that the text agreed today pays particular attention to sheltering start-ups. Tomorrow’s leading companies are the start-ups of today and diversity depends on a deep pool of innovative, dynamic, young companies.
This is a deal which protects people’s living, safeguards democracy by defending a diverse media landscape, entrenches freedom of expression, and encourages start-ups and technological development. It helps make the internet ready for the future, a space which benefits everyone, not only a powerful few."
- Axel Voss, 2019 -
My dad's pc has random ad pop-ups in chrome so I downloaded Malwarebytes.. and it detected 1,600 registry issues.
Can it be trusted though? I do not want to screw up his PC for obvious reasons. I remember many years ago maybe with CCleaner it screwed up my PC so bad I had to reinstall Windows....5 -
Even though I was offered a future position (from intern part time to junior full time) I still worry that I'm not doing enough. Some days I just don't have work to do and all the higher ups are in meetings. Mix that with the bit of social anxiety and having trouble approaching people and I feel like I look like a slacker, even though I really do want to work on stuff and improve.
What can I do to wow the higher ups with some consistency?4 -
That feel when you have a deadline for a website project which requires content from someone in the team and after months of asking for the content they give it to you a few days before a demo day and guess what?
They freaking forgot to send you everything needed so some of the images are blank and hidden and one of the pages has dummy text.
Even the higher ups chasing him, didn't help.4 -
Since when was having 3 spinner styles and 2 pop ups styles a good idea in a SaaS? This baby needs a proper spruce up. I must admit it's not really a rant, I enjoy it, decrapifying the code and general refactoring. This is from a hackathon a good couple of years ago. Finally giving it some TLC. Feels amazing.
-
Alright, it's time to rant again. Honestly work has had its ups and downs and with developing nothing less is expected. After having worked out all the requested functionalities I've come to the point where a designer is needed.
At our office there are 5 people which include me, two ofther devs, someone for sales and our owner. Which strikes me as odd is that the company already exists for 20 years now and there is still no designer.
This ofcourse has resulted in shitty responsive designs that have been redesigned over 10 times and still look kind of shitty.
So far I've decided not to continue to work for them once I finish their internship. -
do GDPR compliance pop ups actually do anything?
When a website obstruct 70% of my screen with one of those I just remove the div element from the html and everything seems to work fine.14 -
What's the real expectations for interns? Just to give it a good go, learn, and ask questions? Currently sitting at home sick af worried I'll look bad to my higher ups for not being there unannounced. Don't really have any way of contacting them.1
-
My senior is lying about fixing bugs in my code to the big boss. I can’t prove it because I don’t have access to the live site files. I don’t have the rapport with the higher ups yet, what do I do?11
-
Was gonna talk to my PM today about stand ups going long, but then standup lasted right through our scheduled meeting. Feels cyclical.
-
A day will come when higher ups will no longer treat website design the same as PowerPoint presentations.
But it is not this day! -
We decided to buy more powerful UPSes as we have had some issues with our old ones.
Well I guess the only thing I can say about the new UPSes is that they are definitely bigger...2 -
Coding during vacations? I'm having a fork in three days. Two processes are already alive. They are more resource hogs than Chrome, they are following each my step like Facebook and are more annoying than windows updates. Home needs defragmentation each few hours, strict antiviral policy is a must, there are random wake ups during the night.
Please, remind me, why do people want to have kids?2 -
I work in an open office at a desk for 4 people. We had 4 set-ups but every few months, someone from support comes and "borrows" a screen or something else...
Now only my setup is left :D1 -
Break ups are like errors.
You get them all the time,
You try to fix them but accidentally make more of them,
And no matter how much you try you get thousands more.1 -
>new feature in application uses external API
>external API has unreliable response times, requires polling to get results, no way to set up webhooks or whatever
>tech lead proposes asynchronous system which will queue up user requests for processing and use websockets to warn frontend clients of finished query results
>higher ups say it will take too much time, make tech lead cut back in scale and treat external API like a regular synchronous REST API
>team dutifully implements feature within the constraints of the new smaller scope
>higher ups try out the feature, find the usage experience is extremely shitty, but don't back down, they only let tech lead scale back to original scope in small increments that still allow new problems to show up
>feature takes up same time or longer, but with more damage to the mental health of developers
At least I'm not in that team1 -
I like ups. They are one of the biggest airlines in the world, deliver incredibly fast over incredible distances, but
Fuck their website!
At least they've updated the design but the functionality is just garbage. I wanted to track a package that is on its way to me. And I wanted the delivery person to know that he could put the package in the garage if nobody is home. I had to register for two different services (God knows what's the difference) and even then ups somehow knew an old address (I believe I managed to get stuck there In the past) which I couldn't remove. I found the option to tell the delivery person to put the package in the garage in some random menu but I don't know if it is for the right address or package.
Why is it so fucked up? Everybody else (DHL for example) has a decent site on which all the stuff is easily manageable.4 -
I just finish my talk on Google Drive and Backup & Sync to our company's higher ups. I already knew it would be hard to make them (most, not all) grasp the things I'll be blabbering but being actually there in front of them looking at their blank, innocent stares made me feel how stupid they are YET they drive a nice car and take home a lot on paydays.
Yes, all these sync thing is new to them.2 -
Fucking dot files...
Written a deployment script to reduce the amount of another dude's fuck ups when updating code on the server. Apparently the website executable automatically generated TLS certificates (let's encrypt) and placed them into the local hidden folder.
There is a limit on how many certificates a single domain can generate so... The website is down...7 -
I just saw this: Choosing between React Native and Flutter
Well fuck both, each has its ups and downs but native is the only thing that keeps mind clear, and I'm happy to do double the work than wasting time fixing dependency shit (RN you little bastard) and having to clone an entire project just to add support for Bearer tokens because it is not yet supported by Google out of the box (Flutter -_-)4 -
It's refreshing yet odd when you go from a team with loads of meetings (mostly stand-ups and of that Scrum stuff) to one with only 2 weekly meetings.2
-
So last Friday I orders my new camera (Canon EOS 1300D) from Amazon with prime NEXT day delivery
It didn't turn up Saturday even tho I got told it would but I got £20 credit from them for their fuck up.
I was told it would be delivered early the next say (Sunday) and by 3pm it was still not there... Got another £5 from them for their fulse promises.
It arrived later that night at 6:30pm
So yesterday I ordered a tripod using my credit and next day delivery for today and im just wondering of it will arrive or not.
Weird thing is, The reason it was not delivered was because of "network problems"...3 -
is it a wrong assumption that start ups don't provide enough design problems to back end developers?4
-
Hey Guys !
How much backup does your UPS provide and what kind of battery setup are you using for it ?8 -
The Echo Show is a piece of junk.... I'd return it but if have to convince my parents to drive to a UPS and well that ain't happening. So I just spend $50 on junk...2
-
In a meeting about how to make the app I am working on worse. They want the same ad to pop up every ten minutes during live video to plug and get sign ups for a newsletter. And in mobile they want it to take over the entire screen. It's so user unfriendly.2
-
Stand ups , why , I could easily just ask the guy next to me what changed in the last 7 of sleep In which I didn't see him, but nooo mister CEO must have it his way2
-
For the employee goals evaluation, my manager suggested to word "the higher-ups difficult to deal with on the other parts of the world" as "handling complex and challenging situations due to time zone differences"1
-
we have been working... we swear...
this is right at the end of a project which was artificially extended because the review process wasn't setup in time. we've had to do certain things the product owners way, whilst shaking our heads and this useful chart is one of the side effects. sidenote, product owner is looking at this chart and showing it to higher ups, trying to show progress being made... i give up. -
today is my 1 year here at work
got a new desktop last week
then yesterday bought some UPS for it then back at the office my 1year old partner (laptop) decided to die on me1 -
Talk about big pop-ups....
I left as soon as I that screenshot btw. Go suck ma dick if you want me to accept your ugly terms -
So I ordered the wrong size coffee filters on Amazon 😶 I know they were probably already in the area but UPS guy got here in 10 minutes to pickup my return I need Amazon to deliver my packages that fast 😂5
-
How do you "weed out" the good startups vs the "bad" ones? I get quite a few random emails / LinkedIn messages from Start Ups, but I am weary. Anyone know a way to do research on their company before replying?3
-
Per my previous rant, I'm reading the reviews for different UPS units 800+ VA/400W) and am looking at this one particularly after going through a lot of them but they all seem sort of mixed.
https://amazon.com/dp/B000QZ3UG0/...
Lots of failures, burning smell, Sparks, and not honoring damages or that they can actually destroy the PC rather than helping it....
And for this brand, another issues send to he AVR vs PFC... Don't know which to get except PFC is $20 more...
I just don't know anymore, sorta like I'm screwed if I do and screwed if I don't...
How do you pick which UPS to buy and make sure it doesn't burn the house down?4 -
Remember when that fuckin api *cough*hankerrank api*cough* you REALLY REALLY need(ed) just ups and stops working...
-
Assumptions are the mother of all fuck-ups!
Always try to get the facts. Don't believe everything that people tell you. More then once have I have had a senior developer or manager telling me stuff that they assume is right which in the long run means more work for you. So trust facts not assumptions! -
I’m a college student at the moment going into my last year. So far I’ve had 3 internships. 2 at start ups and 1 at a medium sized established company. At everyone of these internships I’ve had basically the same task:
Create some software by myself using technology that nobody in the rest of the company has experience using.
I really haven’t had any opportunities to really work in a team environment on a piece of software.
Am I really missing out on something? Or is it ok for me to be missing that experience?
Have any of you guys had this same type of experience with internships?4 -
Working from 7:00 to 15:00,after work don't have that much time to workout, so I try ti weighted push-ups every minute or so from 2pm till 3..biggest problem is when the code embraces me and I forget that I should work out a bit.. And yes, I work from home3
-
Anybody know how to create an app that will alert me via text message whenever my employer posts "emergency pop-ups" on the company's recorded line ?2

I’m swinging by SF early next month. Any cool meet ups or things to do that people recommend? Obviously will use meetup.com etc but don’t want to miss out on some local knowledge!
I’m a laravel dev by trade but love React, Vue, RoR, and am interested in machine learning, legal tech, and decent beer/chat. -
Don't you hate it when you think you have the situation under control, you had tested and checked every edge case which you can think of, then you added and double tested some fresh undetected cases from colleagues, QA, project managers and even some of the higher ups, and then when you... “The Fraud Police is this imaginary, terrifying force of experts and real grown-ups who don’t exist and who come knocking on your door at 3 am, when you least expect it, saying 'Fraud Police! We’ve been watching you and we have evidence that you have no idea what you are doing.'” ~Amanda Palmer

How long are your daily stand-ups with ur team (what size is ut team?)
And when do you have them? First thing in the morning or later in the day?8 -
Finally back using my pc after a long time trying to buy a new battery for my UPS (I don't want to risk my computer during a power outage in this fucking country)
-
That time when you first learn command line to remove a directory and end up deleting the entire corporate intranet.
Thankfully there were backups.
Only learned afterwards they had just started doing back ups the day before.

[Serious] Senior Java Devs, one of the lead dinosaurs of my workplace convinced the higher-ups to make various applications from a new contract using a framework called ZK.
What do you think of this framework and what is your opinion of the overall feeling the java community have about it?
(I'm not personally found of this kind of approach to developing and I'm kinda new to the Java language)8 -
been wanting to make a landing page where students in universities sign up, and they can see a leaderboard score of sign-ups per universities on the page as well. What is the best way to do this? Appreciate any feedback on this question, I am a new dev!2
