I once got a virus which simply disabled my windows defender although I never gave it permission (it was a theme patcher in disguise). I know avast and it's alternatives are trash but better than nothing -

Most malware use social engineering. If you train to doubt about everything, you can succeed without an third-party antivirus.
Why did you need an theme patcher and where did you get it? What trojan was? -
@pmso I can't quite remember. UX-Themepatcher or so. One of the first Google links. It installed spam programs, spam default websites and stuff like that. Also it rebooted my laptop a few times. And "locked me out" of the registry.
