So at work today my coworker overlooked my laptop running Linux with i3.

Coworker: How do you live with this?

Me: What do you mean? This is customized to work with Git and my IDE efficiently while I do dev ops with my server.

Coworker: Your mouse barely works and you operate this thing totally on keyboard shortcuts. Linux will never be a serious platform.

Me: I'm not saying you or anyone at work has to use this, I built an environment to suite my needs. Same as anyone. I thought you liked consumer choice?

Needless to say we didn't get much further beyond him thinking I was nuts for configuring my server in the cli. I swear I don't understand why I try to explain anymore. 😡

I truly hate people when they give unnecessary, unwanted advise. It's my fuckin system I'll use how I like it.

A lot of people don't understand that an OS should not dictate how you use your computer, it should be the opposite. If they want to have a simple experience where they can do everything with their mouse, that's fine, but don't judge people because they want a more personalized experience.
For example, I have a pretty bad eyesight and I'm an albino (which means I get easily blinded just by looking at bright UIs), which means most of the time on Windows, unless I have a gigantic cursor, I easily lose it, that means I use my keyboard most of the time, but on windows, I cannot completely control my environment using only my keyboard, which I can easily do on Linux and also make my system 100% dark themed

@Thib25 a tiling window manager that can be entirely used with the keyboard and is extremely customizable

Anyone who judges the seriousness of a platform by its mouse support needs better standards.

Wait there are people configuring servers without CLI? Poor souls.

I'm glad to have co-workers who come at me and always ask me how you customized your desktop and they always appreciate how cool it looks :D

    @albi

Your description is wayyy to close to a guy i played CoC with last year...

Do you speak french and play a bootleg/shady medic?
  • 2
@littledaxter I do speak french but I don't play Clash of Clans (if it's what you meant by CoC)

@Fradow My day job is working as a Windows Server Admin, so obviously we don't use the CLI much. It's a temp position until I get done with college and hopefully get my career as a jr dev started.

@albi Nah, i meant Call of Cthulu

...in a school cafeteria near a student club called the ogre

@littledaxter oh wut yeah, that it is me indeed... That's weird XD

Were they being sarcastic? I don't know how anyone could look at i3 without immediately seeing how beautiful it is.

@bezorp No, my coworker pretty much sees the Linux ecosystem as a bad joke. I just recently introduced him to the idea that you can build your own PC so he's pretty used to having his platforms pre-built for him.

@starrynights89 good for you for recognizing this as a learning opportunity for your co-worker. I have much less patience.

Tell him having an opinion is like having a cock. It's all fine until you start shoving it down my throat.
