in my OOP class the prof spent most of the time telling us OOP is dying, but we have to learn it anyway.

That's not such an awful idea.

When you are out of school & in your first dev job, you are 99% gonna be working on old code. Functional may be the new hotness, but there're a LOT of ways to approach a problem, and OOP has been out there for a very long time, and you'll find it in 'most every codebase

You simply can't issue a computer science degree of any kind to students who don't know how OOP works. It's the basis of almost every framework around.
