Whatsapp creates a new keypair on every installation (for encryption). So if you use the backup functionality to have your chats on a new phone or after a reinstall, this is the only way to go. Ranting about Google and Whatsapp here is also not a really good idea if you have no knowledge about how this works whatsoever

@ng1905 Why don't they offer password encryption for the backup then? The point is, Whatsapp and their friend Google are most likely happy to have plain-text versions of encrypted communications. A secure platform doesn't export in an unencrypted way, unless it's made for a completely different app.

@TheOct0 So you think Whatsapp (Facebook) and Google are "sharing" the communication in terms of using the user's data w/o their consent?

And yes, they don't give users the option to encrypt the backup with a password, but the backup is still saved behind a google account which is, in fact, password secured (and hopefully 2FA). If this is not enought for a user, he probably shoudn't use any cloud service at all.

@ng1905 I'm saying that Google uses data intensively, and that you're giving away your "encrypted" WhatsApp messages to their storage platform. Some cloud solutions offer FDI, or at least can be self-hosted. I don't think WhatsApp makes it possible to use any other cloud storage for that purpose.
