Raspi, ESP8266, build your own.
The ESP does not pack enough boom for proper voice recognition, so let a Pi do the heavy lifting (simple, vocal based recognition is possible on the ESP, anything more needs more memory. Not sure if the Pi works for you, depends on what you want to do with it.
Voice recognition as a service is insecure as fuck, so keep everything local to your network.

@ilPinguino Will this work though? doesn't one need a lot of data before voice recognition can be even remotely good and reliable?

@hasu it does need training data, how much depends on what type of recognition you need and how much vocabulary you require.

i have to admit it's dead simple to create an alexa skill, but from my tests g.home it's much better at picking the commands (no experience regarding the "skill" development tho')

I find he G.Home works well for voice, plus for the privacy issues, go and delete your history from the Google App you’ll need to use to set it up anyway.

Fun fact, keep it away from a tv as it will trigger a fair bit even when “Hey Google” isn’t spoken.
