Not a bad idea. Could whip up a simple crud app in a few hours, add graph database and notifications to it in all within the weekend. Biggest problem is all the avatars (and investment $$$ for infrastructure), I can't make graphics for shit and @trogus is gone and @alice is gone.

@retoor techr age? Let's try to avoid the underage crowd

@AlgoRythm exactly this. I figure, oracle cloud has a pretty nice free tier allowance, but it's not unlimited. At a certain point, $$$

@atheist In terms of infrastructure, I think static file hosting and notifications would be the biggest costs. Most people like to post images, and clearly that's a large cost given the aggressive downscaling devRant does to them. devRant was always a passion project of Tim and David, they never made any money. Now the passion is gone and so are they, but they keep the site up out of respect for us. In other words, a second challenge would be recouping the cost of the infra.

Also the 10 or so other projects on the pile of things I started but never finished...

@AlgoRythm yeah my thought is images are basically 100% of the cost. AWS SNS is 0.50$ per million push notifications which is low enough for "who cares".

@atheist Last time I had to personally check the price of notifications it was more expensive, and I know that devRant sends a LOT of them (back when the app was popular I'd get over 100 per night)

Now I just use discord for personal projects where I need notifications and my work pays for everything at work!

Text is almost nothing data storage cost wise. Then it's data egress. Which can get pricey quickly. But see how much I can run on oracle free tier. Then the only limit is long term storage of posts. But we're devs. Show the cost, offer the service. I always thought dev services could be priced on a per usage basis, or a "bring your own infra" basis. Like, let people host some stuff in their own free tier infra.

Ahhhh... Shit. That's bluesky for devs.

@AlgoRythm I used to work at amazon, the best thing about it was we could create aws burner accounts to just experiment and learn. Our work accounts easily ran $10k per month and nobody blinked. That's per dev on a team of 12. Our prod accounts were a couple of mill easily (internal service stuff).

The worst thing was the bureaucracy. Half my week was meetings.

Yeah, figuring out how to do real push notifications with @retoor was great. It's a complicated setup but once done it works great (complicated because of the multiple layers of encryption and small browser inconsistencies)

    I like: techrage.dev

As for hosting, I'd honestly use something like firebase/google app engine. Probably firebase, though you can do a lot with it for free.

Can also pull the avatar assets from dR as well

Me: how do I make sure this doesn't bankrupt me
@retoor and @BordedDev: lets run AI image training and gen on rented infrastructure

@retoor oracle cloud always free stuff is pretty good. If I was going to seriously run anything it'd be on that. The biggest kicker with cloud is usually data egress IMO, most providers are like 100gb free, oracle is 10tb. And oracle doesn't magically decide to start charging when you go over, unlike aws.

    devrant69?
  • 1
@retoor same, I've only ever done toy stuff with oracle, work is aws paid for by work. Our bill is only a few thousand a month as we're mostly on-prem. I want a reason to get familiar with it, maybe not so much actually run it long term... 😅

    rant.dev ?

    Damn, taken..
  • 2
@atheist cool! Was it the aws department?

Also, if devRant is a registered trademark, dfox can claim devrant2 domain even if you buy it first, stating customer confusion

@kiki prime video, I was doing metrics analytics and smart alerts. I think it became this because those graphs are exactly as jank as the day I left

@retoor "devrantanaldoggy" if you insist, lol

    @AlgoRythm I'm not "gone gone".

But I'm certainly busy working on my Virtual Tabletop.

@Alice ALICE COME BACK WE NEED YOU
ALSO WHY GREEN DOT AND NOT PINK
  • 2
@kiki I'm on other platforms. The sexism and rapey incel behavior shift here back when I left became too much for me to handle after most other popular users left. Even before that happened, I had to deal a lot with some people harassing me and openly putting me on the pranger just for stating that I'm a "female developer" on my website and similar things.

Once, people here had to defend me against a really fucked up guy who would not let me live in peace without force flirting at me and be all like "just a joke bro, just a joke!!".

My picture is green because you can't change it without also adding an actual avatar.

@Alice my god. This place is VASTLY different now, way better, and I mean it. Female dev presence is on par with male. Mostly because everyone left lol

@kiki I didn't pay much attention to the content here in the recent years. I usually come back to take a look at the recent posts once every 6 months or so and then I immediately see some sexist post or suicide note with incel content and am like "alright, same as always, good old home"
