D-4got10-01197812hI kind of expected that. Using Google APIs, but higher-ups don't want to pay Google. Contractor fixes by disabling the APIs.
I don't exactly know what they were thinking, though. If they thought they could just 'fix' their product by swapping location providers so they could be using the free service but profit off of it. Well... typical higher-up ideology - get everything for free or as cheap as possible, but make bank by selling their own shit. Congrats for playing themselves. -
@D-4got10-01 thinking about it now, the sad part is that they really were clueless... they really though everything in tech was free.
that idea essentially made them market their product (a b2b two way marketplace ) as a freemium product...
they thought they had traction, but they really just burned lots of money for no return. -
@jonathands I have a boss w/ similar mindset. OBS is king according to him. Well... sure, if you can't be bothered to spend some money to invest then it definitely is at that price.

Horror Story Time:
Acouple thousand years ago, before the great plage and the rise of the machines I met the founders of a startup , they visited silico valey, one of them worked in san francisco, but they were struggling, So they fired the senior engineer who built their system, and decided to contract out their development.
Their system relied heavily on Location data, it was very central for their business and they used Google APIs, so a few months after they let go of the dude, google starts billing them. Founders did not want to pay so they contracted out a junior dev to fix the issue... And he fixed it.
On that same weekend they attended a big convention, invested a good chunk of money there, registration numbers skyrocketed, huge success. Come monday morning they call me on Skype.
There was no location data in the new accounts, zero, zilch, nada. The "fix" the freelancer did was disabling Google integration altogether, They never tested the stuff properly, just accepted the changes and went with it.
I don't know if they went under because of this, or if this was just the a part of the issue. But sure enought the company lasted less then a Year after that.
