@retoor come on, even Apple has turned its back on it. How much more evidence do you need that it’s horseshit? :P
-
retoor9401d@Lensflare Firefox did see it's mistake and re-implemented again. Apple is slow as always. Think different, but not THAT different svp.
-
@retoor IIRC, Apple was the initiator of the downfall of Flash in the browser.
Sometimes thinking different is actually good :) -
@Lensflare holy pony young man. Nothing replaced flash yet. Actually ever tried the Macromedia products? They were freaking amazing. A lot of ugly stuff was made and 2004 was an interesting time. But seriously, those products were top notch. Adobe did not make it better, then it was going downhill. Macromedia flash 5 and Macromedia flash mx 2004 were so amazing.
-
@whimsical devs did amazing things with it despite the tech being dogshit. Somehow almost everyone is glad that it‘s gone now :)
-
@Lensflare Ruffle would like to disagree. Flash was loved by many. I think the FFX site was pretty much all flash. Stuff we can finally start doing with the latests css they were doing using flash.
AFAIK the issue was with security, not with the quality of flash. There is still no replacement for 2D animatics from what I hear -
Lensflare2110323h@BordedDev I'd say that the lack of security is already a good indicator low quality tech, but you are right, it was mainly because of security.
As for a decent replacement, YES! It‘s a fucking joke that we still don’t have decent tech for web UI and graphics and are stuck with this HTML/CSS/JS trisaster. -
Lensflare2110323h@BordedDev also the performance of flash games was crap. Even though it might just have been bad programming, the extremely high number of awfully performing flash apps suggests that it was flash's fault. -
Lensflare2110323h@BordedDev we definitely need a replacement for flash. But without its flaws. The fact that we don’t have one is actually quite pathetic. -
donkulator49813hDevs: there's no point making this into mobile apps, the web app works fine on mobile devices, we're not doing any funky hardware and we don't need to store data offline. It's just another thing to go wrong.
Management: all my friends have apps.
Devs: we'll have to do everything three times and charge you three times, and we'll also start to really dislike you.
Management: my 13yo kid made an app, it's really easy.
Devs: fine, here's your fucking app. -
whimsical122513h@Lensflare sorry, can't hear a bad word about flash. We took a step back when we declined that tech. It was a big mistake. Also, don't forget, this was in a time that js was not performing any way like it's now. And in that time, the flash ide was like so freaking futuristic and top notch. It was really medifocused. You had to do key frame management and such. The way the library was implemented was just amazing, same for layers. It worked ten times better for certain edits than photos hop. Adobe did not take over some loser company. They were when it comes to editor experience their fucking ass kicked hard. Another one, is fireworks mx, a very special one. Kinda niche, but great for clicking and minimal edits / effects. It was the ultimate web slicer when slicing was still a hot thing. They offered THE suite for web development and animation and we should have invested in it instead if what apple did. Anyway, who cared about apple that time. Adobe losers. Macromedia 4 life.
-
whimsical122513h@Lensflare some non experienced people were happy maybe. It's like we ditched the Mitsubishi/Volvo of the car brands. Because some loser company producing computer that nobody used because people were too wise or too poor to think different.
My god, what a dilusuons :p Keeping sane he said :"0 -
BordedDev291012h@Lensflare The performance issue probably came from the fact it was a vector renderer and used its own version of js/ts (actionscript). Ruffle btw is a new flash runner, it works with quite a lot of the swf out there.
Embedding is pretty much dead because of security issues, but java also existed there for the performance issues ;P -
Hmm... security-wise I've heard the same thing about flash, but damn, it was fun learning Macromedia Flash 5 in school. Good software.
-
I agree.
But I can also kind of see how it happens.
There's a segment of the population who seem to only use apps, and you kinda lose them entirely if you don't have one.
But as soon as someone demands a fully native app - some the companies might postpone it for years as they fear it's too much work.
Sometimes it may be ok to make a kinda shitty web-app if it at least has one extra feature (like maybe more persistent data-storage) and that may reach some users ...even if you and me find it sub-par

Sigh. There are a number of 'app' makers out there that slap their website into a WebView framework and call it 'our app'. Are you fucking kidding me? If you develop an app, make it at the very least native, not a port. Lazy fuckers.
