Kimmax109876yPeople still don't get that it's not just the apps themselves, but also the compatibility between those. If you use Premiere, you probably want After Effects, if you want After effects, you probably want some Photoshop Stocks in there too, without converting/copying back and fourth. You can render After Effects or Premiere Projects in Encoder, without worrying about the same export settings in different Applications.
Also keep in mind, that these applications are pretty fucking good for what they do and are being updated constantly in CC, Lightroom for example just got a new masking tool with is very useful. The list goes on and can probably changes with each persons workflow and what they do with it. -
@Kimmax agreed.
It's also not just the apps but also the ecosystem around them. I recently paid up for a month of Photoshop after struggling with something in GIMP and Krita, and holy crap it's so easy to find extremely high quality resources and tutorials and communities and stuff for just about anything in Photoshop. And I feel it makes my work faster (this is coming from someone who actually likes GIMP and Krita) so yeah, I can totally see why people would want to stick to PS. Also like you said, it's deeply integrated into many production pipelines, that really does save time and headache.
Though as a counter point the FOSS production pipeline is shaping up nicely. Blender + GIMP/Krita is a surprisingly good combination (sadly audio is still crap, but eh). -
stisch46036y@Alice this! I came here to say Affinity is the SHIT and I LOVE THEM.
They are the heroes we've been waiting for. -

Agred20186y@Parzi I'm not saying that GIMP is inherently bad. I'm saying that Krita is just as good, or even better, alternative. And GUI is more resembling.
-
Parzi86636y@Agred I'm so used to gimp that I can't even use school computers to do gfx stuff because I have to have gimp.
-
musician6656ySome of those alternatives are really good like davinci resolve.
But gimp cant replace photoshop for professional at all. Its a great program and more than enough for most photographers though.
Affinity has great applications but for client work you often need to be able to work with adobe stuff.
And yeah adobes pricing strategy is shit -
Kimmax109876y@stisch nope, I tried sailing around Adobe for quite some time, eventually gave in and learned to love the ecosystem. It just flows man

flabbet1886yI have bought Affinity Photo few months ago and I am very satisfied. You are paying once and you have everything like in photoshop, but you don't have to pay for subscription
