Unpaid internships are the worst thing. You exploit young people and promise them experience. Seriously business makes tons of money yet they come with ways to exploit a young person in IT. I think it is evil.

It's not work if it's unpaid

Unlike I previously have mentioned, unpaid internships aren't illegal in Austria. However, the society just sees it as ethically being questionable at the very least, so companies will pay you around here.

Students: complain about high grading standards
UNI: allows less-educated people to pass
Companies: there's no need to pay interns, most of them have low standards and will work for free
    Students: *insert surprised pikachu*

It all depends on the situation. My internship was unpaid, but we were not working on something profitable for the company. In the first week I had learned more than three years at school.

During my internship I could learn what I wanted and they helped us getting to our own goal.

At the same time we also worked in international teams from both the Netherlands and Kenya.
At the moment I work there and earn more than average in my country.

At the same time Ive got classmates who did have a paid internship but are struggling to find work because they all have only changed text and a color on a wordpress website.

Around here its basically getting paid with money and having a shitty internship or getting paid with knowledge and have a good internship.
My internship company also got involved with my school which caused us being allowed to use git, and package managers.

I've heard that unpaid internships give the interns an advantage later because they have experience. But you can't have one if you're working your way through school, so it becomes a way to maintain economic advantage for students from wealthier families.

I don't have firsthand experience with it but it sounds like a potentially valid concern.

Imagine that there are companies wanting you to pay them for taking you as intern.
