When a MacBook user says..."Unlike Windows, Macs don't get infected plus they're faster than Windows anyway". And I'm all like..

    Lol... Yeah, honestly no system is "secure" even something like Linux can gets bugs and be hacked... Same with mobile os's

    @arg410 lol, I'm just done with these people. Those are the non-devs too. A friend of mine started saying the ish after switching from Windows to Mac. Guess who got infected and couldn't even navigate from google.com. He had to take it back to get it fixed.

    Malware is everywhere, but macOS can't be infected without providing administrative permissions to a malicious software (Windows).
    But..., an OS can't be safe with a stupid user.

    @BrianValente was that a joke?
  • 0
    @brod I hope it was.
  • 3
    @brod It's not. I have been using OS X the last five years, and I never had a problem. It's more secure and faster than Windows.
    If you don't agree, you never used OS X (or at least for some months).

    @BrianValente sure, I haven't encountered malware either - but permission escalation has been successfully completed many times, even recently.. Malware / Viruses exist for both Apple software and hardware (checkout thunderbolt adapter viruses that spread via infecting the adapter itself).

    Unlike Windows, Macs don't get infected plus they're faster than Windows anyway

    @brod they exists, but I never suffered one. On Windows I see a lot of problems everyday.
    For example, if you connect a USB drive infected with the shortcuts virus (replaces your files with shortcuts), your computer is immediately infected, and every drive connected is infected too. Happens on my school almost everyday on Windows 10.
    That's unimaginable on other OSes. I can't trust Windows.

    @brod anyways, if you have some tips to increase security on Windows, I would be glad to get some. I maintain the computers of my school.

    @BrianValente well, you could always turn it off.. 😅

    Viruses and all I'm not gonna talk about it.

    But coming to speed, it depends on the hardware. Even though both are i3 processors or something, I feel mac is a bit faster and stabilized.

    I'm an ROR developer, I will 4 unicorn servers for development and 4 sublime windows and source tree, Google Chrome, Firefox, additional 3 terminals (dependency). Still mac is bit faster than expected with 4GB of Ram.

    But if I do the same in Windows, that's it takes ages to respond. (Tried it already)

    May be it is not because of OS. but because Apple Hardware. I'm sure if you boot windows os on the same mac, it will work with same speed as mac.

    The best part is that you can put trojans on your friend's macs and mess with them all you want. AND THEY'LL NEVER SUSPECT IT!

    I have used Windows for about 6 years now and have never been infected with malware other than purposely for reverse engineering.

    @BrianValente
    Turn off autorun.inf thingies.
  • 3
    I've down voted you because being tribal about your fucking operating system is the stupidest fucking thing I can think of.

    You see guys.... I did a little experiment....

    I removed ALL antivirus software for about a month off my computer, even deactivated the little Windows Defender bs... During that time, I used a somewhat sketchy website known for priacy to download some executables. The executables i selected to be downloaded had many leeches and seeds.

    I installed each executable. Fucked around for a month. Reinstalled the Antivirus software. Did a scan and showed no infections (apart from tool that are used to activate products but that's because the software flags it as false positive).

    Let's just say it's not the OS but the user.

    @BrianValente I've encountered one, and had to clean the client's iMac of a nasty Trojan that was eating 98% of the cpu power available. It took me 9 hours just to clean it up. 7 of them were just waiting for stuff to happen like opening Terminal. Good thing I charged by the hour for that job..

    No one is blaming the OS or the user. But saying that an OS "can't" or "don't" get infected is ridiculous. Either by the user or the OS, an OS can be infected. There is no OS that you can say can't be infected or hacked. Unless no one has bothered to or attempted to do so.

    @Gowtham95india If I had to develop any kind of Ruby on a Windows machine I'd probably cry myself to sleep every night.
    That said, Windows is still better for some things.
    For programming I prefer Mac though, since I have a built in terminal. Being a long time Linux user gives me a sense of freedom and control.

    @aaxa Did I say I tried RoR development on Windows? if so, I'm sorry.

    But what I mean to say I tried running 4 sublimes and one Google App Engine + Python, but literally it died.

    @Gowtham95india No no, you didn't. I just pointed out that Ruby on Windows is pain in the ass ^^

    @aaxa
    Thanks for the info., I'm not gonna try it ever.
