There should be algorithm in DevRant to identify duplicate photos - same memes/photos posted in the last 48hours or less.

To stop seeing the same meme posted by 5 developers on the same day.

Thoughts?

We have one already that is dogshit and compares purely by md5 iirc,so any jpeg artifact will alter it.

To be fair a proper solution would need more CPU, and we already have like a billion requests a second apparently that wants to modify their avatar.

@M1sf3t we already have "repost" hiding as an option that hides it if you activate the option (based on user "repost" downvotes), that's not prevention, that's active filtering.

@M1sf3t Yeah but those people need to understand that if you take a picture from the Internet and post it here, there's 96% chance that people have already seen it. The only way to not repost is to make something yourself.
Then agaib, that's asking too much from those begging for points (as you mentioned earlier).

    @darkney @M1sf3t @Jilano instead of a comment, I decided to give my $50.02 as a properly edited post: https://devrant.com/rants/2222608/...

@M1sf3t I'm confused, the link posted here is a link to the post, that post contains an image link that redirects to an uncompressed image lol

@M1sf3t ah, that bug has been documented I believe before, there's much more though in the apps that for example cause duplicate posts if it doesn't load and you reload.

@M1sf3t you'd be surprised to know then that it happens with great connection too, the comments DOM just doesn't get cleared before reloading often

@M1sf3t Had to thanks to the derail, will repost and fix the things that went wrong, e. g. the image link and it not being obvious the preview image wasn't supposed to be read.

@M1sf3t very unlucky timing, because I even screenshotted it all until I did to possibly add some responses to the OP picture, hope you can recollect it until later today when I post it again.

I specifically asked not to derail to give way for actual discussion, but can't expect much if the initial image gave way for trolling, due to unlucky mobile optimization.

I'll further edit the text too, to give better examples and prevent the known culprits to come around again and derail.

@M1sf3t you can post it now too and tag me, we can then copy it into the new rant once it is up.

@M1sf3t I would really want to hear dfox' opinions on it after I remake the op again, because his word can sort of lullaby us again into some sort of hope for this place or seal it up that this is in fact abandon-ware and if people want to filter out the annoyances and issues, they need to create their own platform, be it in whatever form.

@M1sf3t You can have all the little ghettos of memers, without affecting the others, though that's not the main issue

memes can be fun too at times, the main concern imho is with things like no rules and no mods, leading to wild west and harassment, we've had the biggest ranters leave because of not being able to block a cockroach that would survive the nuke and keep crawling, you get the idea.

@M1sf3t losing the developer connection, then it loses the niche that makes it successful and not just another twitter or that mammoth instance thing, except if you mean opening it up to more people to rant, which is tough to control not to have political soccer mums hardspam it.

@M1sf3t very similar to the concept I had in mind, contemplating now if I should post again to be honest, as I feel it'll just attract the spam again.

@M1sf3t yeah I figured it's not worth it to post here anymore, but instead put it towards dfox in mail :)

@M1sf3t I'd suggest you'd hit them up separately. I will keep you posted once I do, but you might have much more specific questions too that youd like to voice.

@M1sf3t alright, I'll keep you in the loop if and when I message them.
