I am sure that a lot of you have heard about the gap between poor and rich growing. You know that the amount of really poor people and the amount of really rich people is increasing and that the amount of people in between is decreasing. The gap between poor and rich is growing.
But this rant isn't about economy or anything, I think something similar is happening in the technology sector.
I think that the gap between people knowing close to nothing or just really the stuff to get along and people that really know a lot about it is growing. Right now there are so many things happening in technology, quantum computers and especially machine learning. While on the other hand there are so many people not caring or rather not knowing about all of this stuff. Now you might think that this only is true for some of the 'older generations', those that didn't grow up with all the technology. But I can say that today's youth isn't any better.
For example:
One of my classmates had to copy a file into a folder. They both were on the desktop. He clicked on the file and dragged it onto the folder. It was loading and after around 10 seconds it still wasn't finished, so he stopped it, moved the file closer to the folder and tried it again. This really happened and I am 99% sure that he was serious.
Now I don't know if this is just some 1am thought I had but I really think that the 'gap' between people with almost no technology knowledge / interest and people who are making the stuff and really know stuff about it is growing at an alarming rate.
3 billion devices may run java but there aren't 3 billion people who know Java.

While sitting on the toilet, it struck me:

I hope that my daughter takes an interest in STEM stuff. I’m going to introduce it early on for her. (She’s only 9 months old right now) but I’m admittedly nervous that she won’t have a hyper curious nature as she grows up. I was always super curious about learning about how things work, even though my parents never gave two thoughts about it. I don’t think that being curious and wanting to explore the inter-workings of stuff is learned so I’m just hoping she is a curious little-shit like I was as a kid hahaha.15 -

When I worked in a non-dev env, the best part was that I was done with work after working hours. I didn't stress out or even think about the issues. It was something for tomorrow or someone else to worry about. And so, I was not mentally exhausted and stressed out all the damn time.
So, I shall try to bring that mentality to my dev life too. With this new position I'm starting soon, I really want to do well for at least a few years. And that would need me to chill the fuck out. Particularly after work.5 -

The # in C# could’ve been decided when they realize that you can draw the ++ of C++ diagonally and just extend the lines, or you may even think of it being ++++, and tile them up in a 2x2 way. If either is true, are they trying to imply that C# is superior to C++? :P6

Companies try to find young devs, less experienced but more openminded and flexible.. do you think we will still find some cool sobs when we're > 40 || > 50 years old, even if we keep up with new technologies and stuff?

I spent the whole day on git conflicts, I know it happens sometimes. But I do feel like a slow programmer, the boss even said so by comparing me to someone who has 15 years experience by saying I produce less lines of code than than him ( I have 5 years of experience).
So everyday, I have this nagging thoughts; "you are too slow, you can't even program, what are you doing, do something else this isn't for you etc" .
And then when I solve the problem "You are the best, you know everything etc"
A constant battle between self-destructive and positive thoughts.10 -

Was reading something about delusional disorder, and it got a bit scary cuz it made me question myself. Now, I tell you why.
I have a bad memory when it comes to trivial stuff. And I am, by occupation and therefore on a daily basis, creative and imaginative. Having pretty strong imagination means that I often have to ask myself "did that really happen or did I imagine it?" Which, given anxiety, I imagine all types of scenarios before they happen. (Parallel universes got nothing on me 😎)
So, now I'm wondering, where is the line between imagination and delusion, and how can you say what's real and what's not, be it offline (distorted memory) or online (schizophrenia).
One idea could be that video recording could help confirm, but we read emotions and vibe in real-time, and often those can't be recorded.
... Idk. Maybe I'm overthinking it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So after dealing with hell lot of anxieties, I tried meditating. I did it for 2 weeks for now and can see difference. I have started avoiding the unhelpful thoughts. I am not fogging my mind each day with negative thoughts now.
Although I cannot say if I can still face the situations well when I'll get nervous but I know that I will try stopping my unhelpful thoughts.2 -

At many phases of life, i had 3 choices : the difficult one , the average one and the wrong one.
I questioned the difficult one as it was too pointless to go on with, uncomfortable to follow and stressful to practice. Some guys chose that.
I pulled myself away from the wrong one because my parents always reminded me of the implications. Some guys still chose that
I went on with the average one because it was comfortable and cozy and didn't caused any Unknown chain of reactions. A lot of guys chose that.
The results?
The guys who chose the difficult ones became the pioneers/winners
The guys who chose wrong one became addicts and shame to society
The guys who chose the average one later chose the difficult one and became pioneer/winners
I took the average choice ,and then kept on taking the average choice and is getting the unique designation : "looser"
Must choose the difficult option next time :/14 -

I hope everyone is doing very well and of course staying safe, I just would like to share an experience I've had with an interview and would like some input and of course how you may have dealt with the situation,
I recently interviewed with a company that does Analytics consulting and are looking for grads - My gut feeling went warm as I walked into the office, was asked a nice first question such as "How is your day " etc, then was asked questions along the lines of:
"You seem to have finished your degree awhile ago, how are you making your money?"
"How many interviews are you having atm? How successful in each interview are you?" etc..
As I left my body felt very negative about the whole process... also I was only asked approx. < 5 questions, it felt like i was interviewing my interviewer - didn't feel good.
how would you go about this situation? curious to hear your thoughts! I very much appreciate you guys taking the time to respond and read my post. thank you <3 - this was organised through a recruitment firm btw.8 -
We can do what your saying in a week and spend the following two months redoing it, or, we can help you get your shit straight for a week and do it right in a week. How realistic is it to expect a single developer to build a site that functions like booking.com or similar online hotel booking system from scratch? Doesn't have to be on par with those popular sites.
Is this something you would be able to do alone?
I got asked about doing it and I haven't responded a clear yes or no. I'm not sure if I'm under estimating the technical difficulty.7 -
So i have been playing around with Golang for about a week now and like it in some regards but it feels almost too primative to me like it's holding my hand.

TLDR: I don't feel the need to be working at top product companies anymore.
Brief:
The craze to be a developer in top product companies has literally worn off for me in the past few months since I am working from home.
Like if I have to continue this WFH lifestyle it literally won't matter if I am working for a top product company or a startup...
The priority has shifted towards
1. A good team
2. A well-natured and polite manager
3. A flexible working culture which is better suited for remote work
4. And obviously a good salary🤑5 -

- We can either spend our free time learning about new technologies or building something new out of technologies we already know.
- There is no right or wrong choice between this two and sometimes we even end up doing a mix of both
- Personally I feel it's better to strike a good balance between the two approaches to advance in our field 😄4 -
