Beauty (crazyflie) and the beast (me).
A continuation of the vision based control for nano-drones project I posted a while ago.
I am super grateful for my advisors for investing in me more than I thought I deserve.

Just that red sparrow is missing

Then you have my advisor who doesn't even review my paper :(

    I'll take your entire stock.

Sounds like a cool project! And yes, good or bad advisors can definitely make or break a project.

You are a gorgeous beast but i would still prefer to play with the beauty 🤓
  • 4
@bioDan You can play with the beauty for ~200$. Beasts are somewhat harder to handle :)

++ for a very close avatar match.

    @spongessuck I don't have a cat though :(

aliens will attack us with nano drones

    Slaughterbot, is that you?

I did not expect someone to exactly match their avatar in real life

Ooooh that'd be so nice as a swarm with control methods! Please tell me that it had something to do with collision avoidance and motion planning! (there is a paper on non-linear model predictive control which was soooooo nice but they had two big-ish drones for their work so it'd be so nice to see it on nano drones!)

@NoMad It's for exploring un-intimidating human-drone interaction. Drone has to follow you at some distance that we will deem "comfortable" and change the orientation so it's facing you.
The pipeline includes 3D pose estimation, so I guess it can also be used for stuff like collision avoidance and such.

@NickyBones woah! Awesome! So it's different from what I thought. Very interesting tho!

@NoMad My project is based on this ETH research - we are presently collaborating with their lab. You might find it interesting :)

That gave me a new idea. Thanks

Chicks are cryptonites of devrant crowd, proven.(no, I am not sour for not getting digital upvotes.
  • 3
@aviophile Based on what exactly? My most upvoted rant was bashing people with vertical screens...which did not disclose my gender.
Maybe this post is "popular" because drones are cool? Because it shows the physical result of a project?
You sound quite bitter to me.

@aviophile Sounds like a very cool project, and pictures of projects in action (particularly when drones are involved) are always great to see.

I don't get the problem. I've a rant with twice as many votes on a stupid person I once interviewed.

Probably people said it already but damn, that avatar is close to reality.

Not saying your project isn't cool, it is very so, but just to introduce some perspective... Personally I'd go for something more hacky like adapting a cheap drone from China for example. Using Crazyflie (which is a very cool toy, I admit) is just playing with it as intended. Fun but less appealing. Also pricey.

Assuming you'll be presenting it somewhere (for a grade, I guess? Idk how these things work nowadays) you can mention your solution being portable to home-made Arduino based platforms or whatever seems doable, you know, something for less fortunate researchers from 3rd world countries. Should score some extra points. Maybe. Who knows.

@cprn Crazyflie is a means to an end. The real challenge is working with experimental and resource-constrained hardware that is developed in academic environment (hence, buggy, no support, no QA, no documentation), which is mounted on the crazy. This super low power hardware makes Arduino look like a supercomputer...
The point is showing that DL can be done in a very low-end edge devices.
My colleague is working on an entirely new drone - she is doing the hardware design. Once it's somewhat usable, I will get to play with it :)

@NickyBones You mean the PULP shield. OK, I missed that. It makes the thing way more interesting. Before I assumed you just attached a camera and flashed the onboard MCU. You know, a bit more than what they did here:

@cprn Yes, it's an extension of this work

@aviophile lol chicks make more than 10% of the population on devrant. (eyeballing, including those using male avatars) so how can they be cryptonite? That could only be true if they were actually rare. (tho there used to be more women here once upon a time)

Apologies to the OP for hijacking. 😬

@NoMad I made serious experiments on upvote imbalance between south asian males’ and white anglo saxon females’ posts, me’lady.
  • 2
@aviophile Well, I'm not anglo-saxon, so I guess your experiment's results does not apply to me.

    This is an amazing idea
it's cool seing higher-ups actually working with you on this too. i'll be following this
