@wubstepper yes, from the start. Linus Torvalds has implemented enough functionality to do commits and committed the first commit of git. There is a mirror repository of git on github (https://github.com/git/git). The first commit message has something like "the version control system from hell" in the message.

@wubstepper it's a joke Linus hates svn. So they probably use subversion to version git.
