I would imagine competition authorities would block it as they already have WhatsApp.
Given how that's working out for them and they may have to unmerge in the near future I can't ever see it happening

Signal has a pretty limited niche userbase.

Not saying this as a diss. I think it's true for better or worse.

The grandpa who still sends you 10 year old memes via email and is "trying to learn facebook" is not using signal yet. It's still a niche product with privacy as it's main USP.

It'll prove that it was not AI which takes over the world but mega corps (not that that isn't already obvious)

This is one reason why open source exists. It's the reason that Linux has not been "bought" also, despite many companies wishing they could own/control it. Copyleft is also a thing depending on the license.

To answer your question, what would happen is that it would be forked, and anyone who was using it for its primary benefits would simply jump ship there.

Besides, it is now about selling the app, it is about buying/obtaining the users, and there are other ways do that.
