hi guys, I wonder if you can help me, I've been asked by my Line Manager to liase with an app building firm that is going to make an Angular APP and host it on AWS (Amazon Web Services). I've never used AWS before and have no idea what to expect for pricing.
The APP will be educational, questions, answers and resources like slides, text and video etc and available to 400 pupils over 5 schools in place of regular workbooks that they currently use but are unable to due to covid-19.
So that's 2000 pupils all told. What AWS services should I use and what is a fair bill I can expect from them in the UK. The boss is insistent that we have our own AWS account and self host the app when it's done.
I have no experience of this at all so any help will be appreciated. Cheers everyone in advance!
Also the AWS website is a confusing mess and their chat options are not working at the time of posting this lol.4 -
Does anybody here still use dreamweaver? I used to use it a lot back in the day when I started as a designer, but haven't used it in years, but I noticed the app in our companies adobe subscription plan and have installed it.
Given that we live in an age of VS Code, sublime text and so one, I'm just wondering does anyone still use DW and if so what is it good at?2 -
I just love Windows apps on Mac OS lol, this morning MS Word hung for a long time, was completely unresponsive and then I had to 'force quit,' the thing.
Lo and behold, the MS crash reporter opened and it hung for a long time, was completely unresponsive and I had to 'force quit'. How the fuck do they even get through testing?6 -
Hi dev friends, just wondering if any of you guys can point me in the right direction as to which Google API I need to get street names and addresses from postcodes entered in to a web form. Is it geolocation? Thanks in advance if you can save me a lot of time wading through Google documentation.5

Struggling with curl on php today. No matter what I try it won't send a csv to the API i'm working with. :(7

I'm afraid to go outside today because it is sunny.

I just logged into my bank account to see that everything has changed. More basic, primitive styling and in general it is shit. Why am I ranting about this, because I could tell from looking that it has been done to be more mobile friendly. Sure enough I resized the screen and everything snapped into place like it would on a mobile.
Now I've got to put up with an inefficient and more time consuming UX all because some twat in the bank has decided to pander to mobile devices nearly ten years after they've been introduced even though there's already a mobile banking app for that.
Responsive design is like living with a dwarf, because one of you is small, nobody else is allowed to have cupboards on walls anymore. Bastards!4 -
Ok I'll bite as someone who has been away for a couple of weeks. Why are we all in 8 bit?
Is it an april fools thing?6 -
Can anybody point me to some really good resources, guides, videos etc for umbraco website development.
Our firm has inherited a couple of these sites from another company and your's truly has to somehow or other maintain them. I've set up a windows host and migrated the sites and everything is running fine but I'd love to know how I go about making an umbraco site from new. I've got visual studio etc and am willing to learn ASP.net, C# etc.
I've always been an PHP/MYSQL dev using open source stuff, and always thought that I'd burst into flames if I touched anything Microsoft but this stuff looks like it might be useful. Whoever would have thought eh? -
Guys I've inherited an older WordPress plug-in that was custom made by a previous developer. I'm refactoring it as it won't work with the latest wp but the previous dev has used sessions to send form variables from one form to another and I don't know why. I'd like it to be stateless in an ideal world but have been checking out the WordPress docs on cookies but they don't reveal a lot. Any ideas what I can do? Can I send the data without sessions using the native WordPress filters, hooks and actions etc. Cheers1

Now that's how I like my operating systems!
Found these earlier on when shopping and was too cowardly to take a picture in the shop and leave them there, so I bought them. They taste nice too.
Like most women, my wife has a sweet tooth and I've told her that these are special biscuits for developers and she can't have any unless she can code.
She's now doing a quick JS console log of 'hello world' in Chrome whilst I make the tea!3 -
!rant, I have a couple of sky hd+ boxes knocking around, we've cancelled our sky subscription as we're big on netflix and amazon prime instead and sky don't want the boxes back. I was going to take the hard drives out (1 TB each) as i could use some more external storage for my work and pics, but before I do so is there anything I can do with the boxes instead?
Afterall they have a circuit board, memory and a chipset, can I replace the sky OS with something else?2 -
I felt a bit sorry for MS this morning so logged into dev rant using MS Edge only to see that my notifs are completely missing, don't even render lol. Every time I try something like this I wind up going back to chrome (which I am using now) within minutes. Edge genuinely is a terrible browser, (and I think I'm right in thinking is the most expensive one ever developed). Goes to show you can't compete with wealth!6
-
Just installing Node.Js on my windows machine. I try to be loyal and show good faith in MS by using Edge. It fails, hangs or resets every fucking time. What a useless piece of shit browser.
Oh well, Chrome it is then.... -
Ha ha ha!
I will wait a while before I pass judgement if you don't mind...

I don't know why but I think that I'm the only one that doesn't like material design. I get the concept and can see why Google came up with the whole material design thing, but it doesn't move me, no matter how clever it is.
Am I right? Do you hate material design too? Although hate is a strong word, so should I ask are you ambivalent to it too?3 -
I have rather been enjoying MS Visual Studio Code of late. Ten years ago when I was deep in my Linux phase the thought of anything Microsoft would make me burst into flames.
Question - Am I now evil, having turned my back on sublime text, atom and a plethora of other editors?15 -
I'm freelance and I work from home, despite being repeatedly told however my friends have no problem calling in for a cup of tea and a chat in order to stop that work. As a result, I've got to work late to make up for the lost time they've caused me during the working day.
I'm sick to death to explaining this to my friends who just don't understand that I "work from home," and that "I am not home from work."8
