Are any of you guys Linux gamers? I'm a gamer and a programmer on windows and I definitely wish that I had Linux and am considering switching. What are your guys' experiences with it?

It works okay for many games and not at all for some. But I just recently reinstalled Windows for gaming after completing switching to Linux 5 years ago. Windows is simply better suited for gaming and honestly I am happy to have gotten rid of all the proprietary software on my Linux system.

There will be people saying it is same or close to Windows gaming experience. Do not believe them. My only advice would be this. You can switch to Linux without deleting Windows from your life also, dual boot.

I dual boot. That way I get to enjoy life on Linux, and the fuckery that is Windows

I guess it depends on what your playing.

Anything AAA, stay on windows,
Anything indie, you should be fine,

I use mainly linux, rarely ever boot into windows. But it's good to have the option for some games

For example I like NieR:Automata and it *Works* better on linux via proton than on windows... BUT there's a catch, NieR is really badly optimised and it still runs like shit on both... Except I can install a usermade mod/hook that makes it run over 60fps reliably! But oh oh, Proton crashes with this mod, because it does a couple of hacks to improve performance

Another catch is that I have much better experience using my Xbox One Controlers on Windows. On Linux It's a bit finicky and you need custom drivers for it (which work fine, though steam/proton isn't always happy with them)

In short, gaming on linux is fine and getting better, but most games simply aren't made for Linux, and emulation only gets you so far

Lots of games work very well, the majority works but is less efficient, and AAA titles usually don't work at all.

@C0D4 Pretty much, especially multiplayer games where anticheats usually don't work on Linux.

If you want to try before switching, WSL is fantastic

Dual boot I'd suggest, and then if you have issues or find that reboots are too slow maybe try setting up PCI passthrough to a VM unless you do GPU intensive tasks other than gaming. Linux runs fine with integrated graphics, and VMs are really efficient with everything except graphics.

PCI passthrough took me a week to set up and it may not be possible on your hardware, but being able to run games in a VM near native performance is great.

I concur WSL, it's not as fast as native, it has some quirks but really it's a game changer for windows.

Please. Dual. Boot.
Gaming on Linux, is not particulary nice in my experience.

Depends what you game and what hardware you have

Definitely dual boot if you can. I primarily game on Linux, and with proton I can actually play most of my Steam library on Linux just fine, but any online game with anticheat probably won't run on Linux at all.

Stream now provides "Proton" that allows you ti play Windows games on Linux without problems. Tested on Arch, It works fine.

The only reason my pc is dual boot is for the games I like to play. If those games would just run natively on linux I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to remove windows.
