I really want to see the results! I hope they will publish them in no time.

The answer depends on if you want to say it exactly as the inventor/creator did and intended,

    or

if you want to conform to how the general public says it due to a decently logical prediction based on how English spelling/pronunciation usually works (where if you don't do this, you would sound weird and non-conformist.)

@corscheid Are you implying there is some logic behind pronunciation in English?
  • 3
@nickpapoutsis had to edit to say decently logical prediction. Of actual course English spelling system is shit. At least it's not as bad as French. But still.

Careful, this could determine the rest of your life
  • 1
@corscheid or... I could just say it however the fuck I want to say it 😋
  • 3
@ScribeOfGoD All I did was lay out the options. Your choice is either to say it how the creator does, or how mostly everyone else does. Or, hell, create your own way to say it. Maybe it rhymes with life and the g is like the one in rouge.

Say it however the fuck you wanna say it, indeed.

    I pronounce GIF like "if"
  • 2
    Jift

We speak Spanish where I'm from, so it's "Hiff" either way 😄😄
  • 0
Well gif and gift are similar, so I pronounce that way) but how is correct?
  • 1
Well, I'm tired to see English everywhere. The Internet speaks too much English, so I'm happy when I see something that's pronounced in a different way and that triggers English speakers (like Jolla operating system)
  • 3
@DLMousey don't you mean for last option
    The Snowflake way
  • 4
@kshep92 I think this solves the problem. Just use Spanglish when discussing GIF. "Look at este <Heef> she sent me- I'll just send her todos mi <Heef> in response."

@thejohnhoffer a real problem solver, you are. 😄😄😄

I'm curios the kind of answers people have entered into that last choice

I say it like you say 'git' so yeah answer #1

I used to pronounce it with the hard G. But since most people just use a J sound I followed suit.
  • 1
    The real pronunciation is "jif".
The inventor of gif explained it in a really interesting interview.

@Tobio and the creator can go fuck himself because every other word in the English Language is gif, like gift :p
  • 2
@ScribeOfGoD but maybe a new word doesn't have to be an English word. It's not always English-centric
  • 0
    @Tobio except it is....
  • 2
@ScribeOfGoD it is a technical word. Invented. It hasn't got a language. It's just like it is.
  • 1
    @Tobio all words are invented
  • 0
@ScribeOfGoD Of course, but this one is a proper noun. So it has to be pronounced as it really is.
  • 1
@Tobio one it's not a proper noun. And two, if you have to use 'jif' vs 'gif' to clarify then that should be a hint you're pronouncing it wrong (in a way that bucks against its phonetic precedents)

@josh1238 I stand with @Tobio — when an Acronym invented by an English speaker gains international popularity, it tends to follow different pronunciation rules in different places. Think how Wifi is said as "Weefee" in many countries. There is nothing enforcing the English pronunciation as canonical. The spelling rules of Spanish are much more consistent than those of English, so it's natural for some English speakers to prefer the Spanish pronunciation of Acronyms.

its said with a 'J' sound like "JIFF, the peanut butter." That's from the person who invented it. If you don't like it, you can invent the JIF format as a competitor.
