    I agree. I think 15000 ++’s might be a good threshold...
  • 3
Nah, or maybe only for those with at least 10++.

    @100110111 Agreed, 15k it is.

Privileges are instantly and permanently revoked for posting a meme in the wrong category.

@AlmondSauce Quite merciful for such war crimes

15k is a lot, I don't think we should eliminate picture posting like that. 2-5k sounds good though. Perhaps we could also have varying grades of compression depending on user score, so that very popular users' pictures are nice and readable while dfox doesn't have to pay for server storage for random memes from newbies.

I am definitely influenced by the fact that I'm not even close to 15k even though I've been around for a while.
  • 1
@homo-lorens my proposal for 15k is pretty much influenced by the same fact that most of us are nowhere near that yet and won’t be any time in the next several years.

@100110111 Yes but picture posting is a part of devrant. IMO it shouldn't be removed, and it definitely shouldn't be shadow-removed, such that it technically still exists but there are like 3 people who can use it.

@100110111 If you find the pictures annoying (which I can 100% understand) then advocate for a UI with smaller pictures so they aren't in the way.
  • 1
@homo-lorens or a setting to not show posts with pictures. Tweakable feed you know, at least we all know our ways around things like that
  • 7
Nothing like that will happen. Even the downvote feature is terminally broken and doesn't get fixed.

devRant is a (mostly) abandoned project. That's no surprise because that's just what happens to closed source projects after the initial devs lose interest.

@Fast-Nop Do you think we can convince dfox to open source it? Maybe just take in contributors one by one from the community initially to fix security issues, and then open it after some 30 invested and wise community members found all the security issues they could.
  • 2
@homo-lorens that would be delightful indeed. @dfox ?
  • 6
@homo-lorens I don't think that would work out. They would lose control over the source, and DR clones could pop up. This would completely devalue DR as their portfolio project.

@100110111 I’m not really sure how open sourcing devRant would address a request like this. It’s not something we’d want to do anyway IMO - and how would it be handled? It’s pretty different than a simple bug fix and it’s something that impacts user experience. But we don’t have much interest in changing a behavior that has been around since devRant launched. A setting to disable images, maybe, but that’s similar to are category filtering too.

@homo-lorens I wrote about an initiative to open source devRant in one of my recent announcement posts, and the interest level was close to 0 at that point from the community it seemed. That certainly didn’t help convince me that it was worth the significant time and possible security issues to work towards open sourcing in the near future. I think a lot of times people say they will help but once the real work is required it becomes a chore. At least that’s what I’ve seen in open source a lot of times and I was honestly surprised how little discussion the announcement resulted in.

@Fast-Nop unfortunately, you are likely correct there... I do wish they’d agree to take in a dev or two into the project just for the sake of upholding the community

@dfox I don’t even remember seeing such an announcement, sadly. Got lost among the rants, mayhaps?

But I am glad to hear it has been considered :)
  • 2
@100110111 yeah honestly I’m not sure what happened, was definitely surprising to me based on how many people have requested it in the past. The announcement is still even pinned I think.

@dfox Two easy things that could be done:

    1) Re-enabling the downvotes. You once said they were intended as primary self-regulation mechanism, but if one actually uses that, one's downvotes don't count anymore.

That was likely meant to address revenge downvotes, but it doesn't kick in only in that case, and permamently disabling ruins the whole feature.

    2) Add action button debouncing to prevent accidental double or triple posts.

@100110111 Same, I've been on this platform for years (albeit not that active) and never saw such a post.
I personally would have contributed to it (although not at the maintainer level as I've got enough on my plate).

AI Moderators should solve the issue

    "AI should solve the issue"

@homo-lorens We should use pyramid scheme, One will be allowed to Shitpost if he will detect 2 other Shitposts with atleast 90% accuracy.
  • 3
I think it should only be enabled for users above 40k ++.

But.... I will exclusively use it to post pictures of my cat's butthole.
  • 2
@bittersweet If we go that high, it should be al least 42069
  • 1
I think it should be reserved for people where ++'s mod 1000 == 0, so that It's realy rare to get it, but also happens often enough to still get some good pics semi-regularly!

    Jk though
  • 1
@100110111 I beg to differ. There are people on here well capable of posting properly under 15k.
  • 0
@homo-lorens Maaaan. Maybe open-source/hardware the server on which dR is deployed next? Yeah, that would be a disaster (just impossible and inappropriate).
