What is your way of diagnosing a desktop/laptop?

An employee at work told me that her daughters laptop is acting strangely and she asked me, since I am into computer and I said sure. I said to her to tell her daughter what I am specifically looking for. I never really done this before.

I tend to check read/write speeds along with other stuff like fragmentation, cached nonsense, and other stuff that may bog it down.
    Dig around basically.

Erase the hard drive like 10 times, install clean os and apply thermal paste to the cpu&gpu

I check software, startup, registry and disk issues, but it really depends on what's happening

Running Malwarebytes are usually a good start to remove a lot of crap. And what other peeps already have said, check for slow starting services. There are usually a ton of them if the user is trigger-happy on download links ;)
