I said I wanted Ubuntu, and I got Ubuntu 18.04

Why you might ask? Because the older LTS has features that have had more time for bugs to be fixed.

Especially after RedHat basically decided to let CentOS die.

Just start from rootfs / core...

    Man pages can be reenabled.

Avoid the ubuntu preselection packages (e.g. Ubuntu-Server) and make no-install-recommends / suggests default.

In my experience, Ubuntu can run great as a server os, if you go for the minimalist route.

Otherwise ... You get a ton of shit that wastes resources and does dumb things TM.

Eg. unattended upgrades, snapd / package kit / firmware upgrade daemon / ...

Not to mention the half desktop system in a sever distribution :/

I'm on TW, love it. Suse is my new favourite distro and I honestly struggle to use anything else especially Ubuntu with apt and whatnot
