sarapnst798y@mak420 lots of features but not realistic deadlines for their developers ==> buggy poor features.
-
sarapnst798y@linuxer4fun vs's much smoother for any language π but have both installed anyway .. π a fan of nothing
-
mak42041258y@sarapnst
I didn't have much hassle with windows 10 so far ... but I must say vscode, bash for windows and chrome are pretty much the only applications I use ^^ -
drRoss49148y@linuxer4fun Not on an SSD.
Also, you can still use the metro UI, you just have to enable it... -
sarapnst798y@thmnmlst e.g. It doesn't show the options when you tap and hold a tile (the only way is to right click using a mouse/touchpad), animations are just simple "reduce the distance to the target point by scaling that" like old games.
-
mak42041258y@azuredivay
oh my that sounds so promising if they fix scaling with project neon that would be so awesome :)) -
@flonach well, I think you are right... And it is probably a Flaw I should work on... After thinking about your comment, you probably are right...
-
@flonach @linuxer4fun Although I'm obviously on a certain side here, I felt like shipping in my view on this (both your comments). I think linuxer4fun meant it as a jokeish thingy. Although I partly agree with flonachs comment, but.
A lot of people tell me that I have to accept that windows/mac are good operating systems. I very simply disagree. I personally can't call an operating system good when it's closed source by nature. Meaning that you can't adjust it to suit your needs (freedom) and can't check it for potential security flaws and (govt) backdoors. I think that an operating system which doesn't give you those freedoms is not a good operating system. Years ago I'd have agreed with flonach but since snowdens revelations, I simply don't trust closed source software.
I don't feel superior because I use Linux by the way.
These are my personal opinions so you can agree or disagree :P -
mak42041258y@linuxxx
I understand your point, and I did have the same point of view a few years ago but I changed my mind after thinking of it in a practical sense.
1. I really don't have the time to use all those freedoms I just want to get shit done!
2. I think it really doesn't matter which operating system you are using in regards of snowdens reveals the government doesn't only spy on your computer they are also listening on the big internet nodes and there is nothing you can do about it ... except encrypting your entire communication which should be possible on every OS.
3. OK if you use linux its less likely you get fucked by some crypto malware or something.
4. Its all personal preference and none of the 3 main operating systems are so bad you can't get shit done with it.... -
@mak420 I see your points entirely! Too badly, a few days ago a new law was introduced in my country which allows the government to perform city wide Internet tapping and automated city wide hacking (using disclosed and non-disclosed vulnerabilities and backdoors) when only even one person suspected of a serious crime is on the neighborhood. Thus, all my defences are currently on high alert and closed source software has been shown the door.
I hope you can also see my point after reading this.
(by the way, a new fbi law was introduced a few months ago which allows it to auto-hack any Internet connected device which hides behind a anonymity layer (vpn, tor etc))
Let me make clear again though that I still understand your point of view as well!) -
mak42041258y@linuxxx
I'm absolutely getting your point, and I do agree with you that linux is definitely the way to go if you want some real privacy ... What I was trying to say is that I think most of the people even if they would have the expertise doesn't have the time or muse to tweak linux to actually be that different to windows ... you really have to put a lot of work into it and if the government really picks you its hard to defend yourself you just dont have the resources but you can make it a pain in the ass for them ^^ just curious which country do you live in? -
@mak420 True true, I didn't mean in general the tweaking stuff but that's about the best example I could think of haha.
I live in The Netherlands :). -
drRoss49148y@linuxxx Err... Linux itself being open source is a vulnerability. The easier it is to see source code, the easier it is to find holes!!
-
@drRoss True but also the easier it is to patch them! And at least you can spot backdoors within open source code :P. But I think we will disagree on this subject forever since I think recalling you being a windows liker and as such, we have very different views on these kind of subjects!
-
mak42041258y@linuxxx
I was thinking about moving to the Netherlands when I was in Amsterdam last year ^^ fall in love with your capital :) but as always I will not leave my comfort zone xD -
@mak420 Fair enough haha! I actually don't like Amsterdam that much tbh :P. Where are you from if I may ask?
-
mak42041258y@drRoss
naaah I don't think I can agree with you on that point, the linux (kernel) maintainers do a really good job and there are just to many people involved that the open source code could be a real problem ... -
mak42041258y@linuxxx
are you living country side? in a windmill? ^^ I'm from upper austria, mountains and stuff xD -
drRoss49148y@mak420 Oh come on!! Not everyone who contributes to the Linux kernel looks at every line of code when new features are added to ensure that anything that was introduced doesn't negatively impact on other things. Open source is just as vulnerable to these things as closed source. Look at Android, for example.
-
mak42041258y@drRoss
yeah in that regard you are definitly right, it seems pretty much impossible to have software without vulnerabilities. What I was trying to say is that I think its harder for the government to introduce some backdoor in opensource software then in closedsource, except they fuck up standards as they did or tried with random number generator -
drRoss49148y@linuxxx Easier to patch... Easier to find. It works both ways.
I am a Windows fan, yes, but I also support the open source community and it's ethics.
But I don't support the theory that Open Source is the answer to the world's software problems just because people can easily see inside, it presents just as many problems as it prevents. -
drRoss49148y@mak420 They don't have to worry about introducing backdoors, they would just use undisclosed vulnerabilities. And as someone else mentioned, they monitor the pipes anyway.
-
mak42041258y@drRoss
yeah that was me that mentioned that ^^ normally I'm on the windows side of this discussion xD So that being said, I can't disagree with you ^^ -
@drRoss @mak420 I see everyone's points and although I don't agree with everything, I keep remembering this guy from my first year of study. He used about the same arguments as you guys do (not saying they are wrong/false,just saying they remind me of this situation) when we had to install a Firefox/chromium addon which he made for some kinda online service. Everyone installed it calling me paranoid with my closed source trust issues etc. I refused to install it though.
Years later I met him again and he told me that he actually put in a remote access tool/backdoor functionality in that add-on and that he found it funny that my paranoia back then made that I was never infected with that malware.
I think that since that moment, my trust in closed source stuff has drifted away even further.
Anyways as I said, I see everyone's points so good to see everyone has their opinions on these matters :). -
mak42041258y@linuxxx
++ for the netherlands :)
So I think now its time we close this disscusion here ^^ that doesn't have much todo with the original rant xD -
@flonach Yup yup all true but the last one if you ask me. Are you a bsd user if I may ask? :)
-
lm90258yWindows 10 isn't exactly "done" yet, and isn't likely to be. As they're constantly adding new features, there will be new "features" introduced as well.
-
drRoss49148y@linuxxx I find it hard to believe that anyone of those small number of people would have cared enough to look at the source, even if it was open source...
-
sarapnst798y@linuxxx @drRoss @mak420
Does this privacy matter?
Government is monitoring us, so what! I mean at least for lots of user or even developers it's not that important really. -
@sarapnst Motherfucker, misclicked and now my whole fucking comment is gone :(. Anyways, I can't recall the context of this privacy thingy but I always use encrypted comms when possible and open source software as well. Yes, the govt monitors everything, even more reason to encrypt everything so that the monitoring of every citizen becomes useless! But for real though, My data is my data, stay the fuck away from that!
Everyone their own opinions though :D

What was wrong with the major updates and clean modern UI? It was the only reason that made us happy.
Now buggy and not surprising minor updates, doesn't really support touch like 8.1, poor animations, poor etc. that looks like a quick without-love development to just "release quickly".
Anyways, who else liked the modern metro UI in 8.1 and sad about going back to traditional desktop on win10?
