So after 5 months of complaining and ISP denying that the modem was at fault for the issues ("because they'd get more complaints if it was") while trying to rip us off as well[1], they finally gave in to sending us one of the modems "intended for their business users"[2].

Low and behold... I haven't had any issues yet in the past few days (as opposed to having issues between 3 and 8 times a day).
Nah lads, surely wasn't the piece of shit old modem that is known to have a severe design flaw right? :^)
Must have been my router and devices behind it right? :^)

    Quiete a long time ago, one only was allowed to connect "certified" devices to the German telephone network. Back then, it was fully state owned ("Deutsche Bundespost" = German federal post), too. The phone network was very shitty.
    As the certified ones were very expensive, people started to not care about that, and the network was finally fixed by adding fuses so defective devices would not take down large "blocks".

    (Years) later, most private ISPs tried to prevent custom modems, too and even charged fees for using the ISP's one...
    I'm glad a while ago a law was set in place which made that illegal: ISP have to provide a "passive" endpoint without additional costs.

    Unfortunately, some ISPs do not offer any support with customer owned modems or require media converter (fibre-to-copper) converters owned by the ISP.
    Oh, and they lobby to revert the law.

    Why do ISPs that shit everywhere?

    @sbiewald I wish I'd knew why...

    Probably because they know how essential they are and try to abuse it...
