Many people say that it's easy to pass probation, so I wonder what would make someone not pass a probation in your opinion?

Stealing, shitting on the boss table, selling private customer data, murder, tried murder, arson, in short the usual.

Failing to show up or doing something stupid.

What did we have...

- uninterested in job
- not showing up
- being ill whenever shit hits the fan
- sex (never at work)
- violent / aggressive behaviour
- emotional outbursts
- disloyal behaviour / breaking confidentiality
- stealing
- ....

Quite literal anything that shouldn't happen at work.

From the handful that didn't pass probation they included:

- uninterested in job
- not willing to do what was needed but rather take shortcuts on everything and deliver a pile of shit
- outsourced their work
- stopped showing up after first week

@iiii if you bang a coworker be prepared for gossip and a certain reputation. On probation, this might indeed lead to being fired - especially if it happens during your work time.

Work time = work. Not banging another in the break room.

Pragmatically, this varies hugely on both a company level and a paycheck level. Usually though, for reasonably junior employees (and even low mid level employees) you pass if you show you're willing and able to learn, show up, take things on board, etc. - no-one should be expecting you to hit the ground running here.

For seniors and contractors it's harsher, but rightly so imho. If you come in expecting a top of the line salary, boasting about years of experience etc. then we expect you to hit the ground running. If you can't do that, or it's clear your experience isn't anywhere near what you claimed, the you're out.
