Being able to differenciate between imagination and common reality is an actual skill and if a person, you interview doesn't has it, it can tell you fake stories without showing any signs of lying.
Their body language will tell you that they are telling the truth - because from their point of view they actually do.

No, everything is fine. There was some danger of escalation as he could have gone for the lazy fried baby recipe.
That certainly would have been a waste and probably not filling for long - considering that the average baby just weights a bit more than 7 pounds.
But extended as a stew, it can last multiple days, reducing the likelyhood of torches and pitchforks tremendously as he doesn't need to get another one right away.
While townsfolk certainly fears us, there are limits to how much you can harvest before they are getting desperate and bring the mentioned torches and pitchforks...
