Can we just for a moment recognize how absolutely fucked Windows update is?

I have done everything, EVERYTHING, outside of booting from a live Linux OS and permanently deleting the windows update executables. All this to stop windows from force updating and rebooting my system while it's locked.

I've killed services, schedules, edited the registry, changed group policy. I even set my wireless connection as metered. Fun fact about that, if MS deems the update to be "priority" they'll download it anyway and reboot, so fuck your data-cap.

I wouldn't have a problem with it IF they would put everything back the way it was before, but those fucking cucks can't even be bothered with doing that. But you bet your fucking sassy ass they start up all the bullshit services I disabled last update are all running.

I don't even know WHY I even try.

Doesn't matter anyway, in a few months I won't even be able to use half the tools I use on Windows for work due to licensing issues 🤷‍♂️

At that point I will give a big fucking finger to Windows 🖕 and use a VM for all the fucking work related bullshit.

Fuck you Microsoft, I would say it's been fun but you're a god damned disaster. I wish that I could send a message to the entire MS board on how much they have failed, but unfortunately I rather like my freedom and it's frowned upon sending rotting roadkill in the mail.

    Honestly, I thank Microsoft for being cunts. More people for the Linux side. I just hope the majority won't switch. Don't want Linux to become the same shithole as others because of popularity.

    Just use Windows AME.

    I had to switch to Windows 10 Pro from Windows 10 Home to control updates. I have a machine at work and at home that are both pro. I set update policy via group policy and so far it seems to be respecting those settings. When I open Windows Update Settings it always says updates are controlled by policy. I had zero luck with controlling updates on Windows Home.

    Still wondering when MS will force update 10 to 11.

    @Linux for licensing and legal reasons I need to use a fully licensed version of windows or I jeopardize some contracts of my employer, but I'll probably look at that for my gaming rig.

    @Demolishun I'm using pro and group policy does fuck all. I don't have a DC setup, but I should still be able to set policy on my device, but no bueno.

    @sariel Is this an issue where some updates sneak through? Maybe mine is doing that and I don't know it. We don't have DC either.

    @sariel Does your Windows Update Settings screen have a note on it saying this:

    "*Your organization has turned off automatic updates."

    A guy I work with said the group policy seems to be working for him. I wonder what the difference is.

    @Demolishun I'll usually just lock my system at the end of the day and walk away.

    I keep my editor and all my browser tabs open. That way when I come back the next day it's exactly where I left it.

    Windows updates take place and when I get back on all the MS apps like Word, Outlook, etc are running; but my editor, browsers, slack, terminals, containers, etc are all gone and sometimes corrupted.

    Takes me at least an hour to get back to where I was.

    This used to happen about once a week. After all my changes it's now once a month, but it's almost always on demo days.

    It just pisses me off because I've tried everything possible to work with the bullshit they spew about "disabling Windows updates" and it's literally all lies or has heavily limitations that are never documented.

    @sariel Shit, sorry, that really sucks.

    Still wondering if Windows 11 is gonna be forced on machines. I don't want Windows 11 on anything I am currently running.

    I'm not sure how I did it, but a few years ago I got auto-updates to stop happening. I think it was a combination of group policy and registry edits. I was very proud of myself, until last year, when manual updates also stopped working. Windows Update just doesn't work any more. And now my system is stuck on version 2004 and I'm probably going to have to reinstall to get it up to date.

    But I use Linux 99% of the time so I haven't bothered trying too hard to fix Windows yet.

    You can still control updates if you have an updateserver

    @stop yet more infra I will need to maintain to do the things I used to do without it.
  • 1
    Dunno what's your problem. Policies work as intended. Never had any reboots other than initiated by me.

    W10Privacy can set all the stuff for you. Go to semi-annual channel with deferred feature upgrades and/or release pinning. Set automatic updates to "notify only" (or off if possible/wanted) and deactivate reboot shit.

    You still should check for updates manually once in a while so it wouldn't happen automatically, not sure if it does when you don't (with those settings).

    Probably won't work on Home aka Beta Tester version though.

    @saucyatom I do monthly patching for all my servers at the start of every month, would do devices too (if given the option).

    I just don't know why the fuck they've made it so impossibly difficult to disable in a pro version.

    In fairness, anyone running pro is probably going to be running their own DC or update server, but it's still insane how much misinformation their own techs provide on the MS forums.

    @sariel

    You already fuck your system up by trying to disable Windows updates xD

    @Linux even more reason to drop it entirely and install Linux.

    All my other devices, except for my gaming tower use Debian.

    Only reason why I use this one is for work, but now there's no reason why I can't just run a VM and use vnc or rdp.

    Works on my machine

    @sariel

    Lets hope that you can ditch windoz soon, more and more games works nicely on Linux nowadays

    @Linux Random guy on net named Linux suggesting people hook up with Linux... What could go wrong? ;-)

    @Linux Fairly deterministic? I dunno.
