It's a fantastic field if you wanna get burned out for mediocre pay.
Aside from that, all you need is knowledge how to code and some kind of game engine. -
Learn C++ or C#. If game dev doesn't work for you, you can still transfer your coding experience to smth else.

1. pick an engine
2. learn that engine by doing tetris, space invaders, platformer and 3d fps/tps game in it.
3. now actually pick/make an interesting design for an interesting game that is actually worth making and not just a "metoo" kind of game
4. make that game
5. publish it.
6. congratulations, you are now officially a game developer. -
game dev sounds great but isnt. Its so mcuh art and models to do. The coding is not the majority.
If you decide to make your own game engine then thats sth else ofcourse
