    What does this software do?

    @jonas-w Nothing that repartitioning the drive and formatting it with Ext4 wouldn't get rid of.

    Let me explain, I do have a password to unlock the drive, without the software i wouldn't be able to open my drive in linux, if i want to, i have then to remove the password and leave it open

    @dIREsTRAITS have you considered something like gpg as an alternative? Take a gander at veracrypt.

    @ComputerToucher how can gpg with wd drive? I'm looking for a way that ask me a password to unlock the drive in any OS

    @dIREsTRAITS …yes? That’s why I asked if you’ve looked at veracrypt or another whole disk encryption tool that supports gpg but doesn’t necessarily requires a windows os

    @ComputerToucher i really can't use veracrypt, it's a big drive 6TB, it will take time to encrypt it first time and even more to mount it....

    @dIREsTRAITS so what do you want then? Obviously there’s no official software to make it work, that means YOURE the one that has to do the work to make it work. People that have media libraries are in the hundreds of TBs, and some of them encrypt, either with rclone when sending it away or doing it locally. You’ll be fine. It’s mostly a button push so 🤷‍♂️

    I dunno. But every time I run it on MacOS it crashes Chrome for no apparent reason.

    Why would you need them you have smartctl and all the other drive utilities Linux offers and wd uses standard smart flags

    @dIREsTRAITS just blow away the part table and add an ext4 or whatever else done

    @stackodev that's a good software

    IDK, but... how about encrypting only part of your disk? There are cross-platform tools for that. I use TrueCrypt for this purpose.

    LUKS Encryption

    Not sure if this helps you, since the mybook drive might be different than a passport drive*, but I've been using this python utility for the past 4 or so years with my Western Digital drive: https://github.com/0-duke/...

    (*I'm typing on my phone with no mood to actually check it)

    @Lasoloz how reliable is this tool?

    @dIREsTRAITS I've never had any issues regarding functionality, I could always work with my drive, although, it was originally encrypted on Windows, so I only used the unlock feature. (I've had another issue though, where a Python library stopped working in a newer python version. I've created a PR for that, and later that day the tool was also fixed)

    To be honest, next time I would probably just use Veracrypt, as I have another Samsung drive, which has proprietary encryption software only for Windows and Mac.
