They got software and hardware balance!

Macbooks are not shitty, the build quality is great, *nix OS, they are just very expensive.
  • 2
Its not, it just dont fit everyone need xD
  • 4
So, in other words, you are implying that not so great developers don't own a MacBook, discriminating tons of great developers just because they don't own one.
  • 7
I don't own it nor want it and I consider myself a decent developer.

@CodeMasterAlex No. Some great devs use other machines too. But MAJORITY of great dev seem to have Macs. While I see many devs cursing Macs.
  • 1
    Because better than Windows!
  • 1
@makkBit awkward. I worked for many well known companies and encountered many excellent developers. But almost no one uses a macbook. Maybe it has to do with the platform as I work mainly on microsoft stack.
  • 2
@mikk150 bullshit. That's like saying BMW is better than Mercedes. Based on what?? Personal preference? Or what? If you say that at least provide some verifiable, reputable research to back up what you say.
  • 0
@CodeMasterAlex probably the platform. Nearly every dev I (personally) know has a Mac... including me!
  • 2
@CodeMasterAlex I personally use linux, but I can handle OsX if I have to, but not windows

a developer is great not because he has good tools but good skills. So personally, it doesn't really matter what u use but it's definitely helpful if u have the right tools.
  • 1
@CodeMasterAlex Not like that. BMW and Mercedes are both car manufacturers. He compared a laptop to an OS. It's like saying that cheese is better than cows. Both have something in common, yet they are different and cannot be compared.

    Too expensive in my opinion.

@usethedocsluke yet you can, because try to buy IBM compatible with OSX

    1772€ for a 13" MacBook Pro with an i5-6267U, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD.

    While you can get a 17" laptop with i7-6500U, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD and a GTX 980M for 959€
  • 0
@byIcee and i5-6200u ibm with 8gb of ram and 256g of ssd for 1300€.. Its all about quality

@mikk150 I won't hate Apple "just because", but they overprice their computers. The laptop you listed is most probably 13", if not, my bad.
I was neutral with Apple but since they started doing unreasonable "improvements" to the iPhone, I'm not cool with them anymore
  • 0
@byIcee to be fair Apple has been in the business of removing things that people won't need soon for a while.. think CD drive, USB-C ports, VGA, etc
  • 1
@AngryDev but the headphone jack though.
  • 1
@byIcee that's exactly what I'm referring to. The headphone jack in reality can easily be replaced by another lightning port. I dislike the fact that there's only one lightning port on iPhone 7, but I like the concept ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    @AngryDev ah. My bad :/

As a development company, buying a stack of MacBooks with support is easy. Not cheap, but you buy hardware from a well-known trusted company.

You can hand out Airs to support/sales staff, and they'll be happy. OSX is not malware immune, but Windows is an easier target.

Design employees tend to love OSX, as it's tailored to them.

Now about half of the devs don't care about the OS too much... they'll just throw brew on it, install their tools, and get to work.

Personally I HATE OSX with a passion... So what do I do? Use refind to install Linux, instead of complaining to my boss. Because despite not being an apple fanboy, the hardware is fine in my opinion.

So, Apple is succeeding in conquering development startups in a company wide way... And for startups, it's of great value to have one unified platform which simplifies support a lot.

The only reason my work pc is a MacBook is because you have to have one to create iOS apps, else I would have gotten a desktop with better specs for probably half the price

@mrtnrdl check my comment above. It's 300$ cheaper for a much better laptop. And if you REALLY want design, get the HP Spectre x360 or something
  • 1
@bylcee But the 360 has low powered version of the CPUs. Better alternative for the MacBook Pro would be Razer Blade
  • 0
@codedoge true. I listed it because I really like the Spectre's design 😄
  • 1
@byIcee Yeah, me too. Too bad it's so expensive as well.
  • 0
@byIcee It's even worse in Europe, idk by what logic a $2000 laptop in the USA costs 2000 pounds to 2000 euro here.
  • 0
@codedoge yeah kinda sucks. 1200€ for a 13" and an under locked cpu :/
