We were given a MacBook in the beginning. Yesterday, appreciating my work, my manager gave me a MacMini to make my own server for testing purpose. I joined just two weeks ago. 😃22

This is when writing a script that sets up your dev environment pays off...
Having 6 new employees join our startup. The script installs pretty much all dev tools and apps as well as sets up the device management profiles. 😎27 -
People are posting their setups so I thought I'd post this.
It's a 2012 MacBook Pro, 13 inch. I put 16GB ram and some solid state in there just so it gets the job done.
When I was a freshman in high school, my dad saw something in me that he believed in (and I didn't). He decided to put his money where his heart was. He told me that he would go out and buy me a computer, and I wouldn't have to pay him back, if I would work hard at programming to pay for my own college.
His investment payed off. I just graduated high school and started a job last week that will get me through college debt-free through the gap year that I'm taking. This machine's getting a little old, but it means a lot to me. It reminds me that my dad believed in me even when I didn't. 🖖🏼12 -
Friend: "Why did you buy a Macbook Pro? Look at the specs, the RAM, the storage, the processor.. heck, ain't it overpriced? I wouldn't if I were you"
Me: "No, I didn't buy it. My company gave it to me when I joined them."
Friend: "Oh.. okay... hey, is there any job opening in your company?"12 -
I miss my old ZenBook with Linux 😔
I mean, the MacBook is great, but it feels like I left my old simple gf who loved me for a Hollywood sexy bitch who doesn't give a fuck11 -
Scammers mann:
——————————————-
“Hello sir, you have to renew your subscription before tomorrow else you’ll be charged $299.99 from your bank account.”
Me: And what’s this subscription you’re talking?
“Your Microsoft antivirus subscription, sir.”
Me: Oh wow, and when did I subscribe to this?
“Three years ago, sir.”
Me: lmbo. Please find someone else to scam.
“No sir, it shows here that you subscribed to Microsoft antivirus 3 years ago.”
Me: Dude, I was in college three years ago. I was too broke to be subscribing to useless stuff like this.
“But sir, its an antivirus. You subscribed to protect your Windows PC from viruses, malware so that bad people and hackers don’t get into your computer to do bad things and steal your info.”
Me: Well, what a coincidence. You’re describing yourself except you’re trying to attack my bank account not my pc. And oh, I’ve been using Linux for the past 5 years and currently own a MacBook so good luck finding someone to fall for this.
“Oh, I see. Sorry.”
*Scammer hangs up.
Lmbo, like dude seriously?
Unfortunately though, someone at my work mother fell for this and had to close all her accounts and create new ones.19 -
Whomever at Apple decided that a non-upgradable 8Gb of RAM was OK for a model they call "Pro" can go jump in the nearest active volcano right now!23
-
So after using my new MacBook I have 1 complaint... This fucking escape soft button being away from the edge, I understand you want to do symmetry with the finger print scanner but Jesus Christ it's annoying!
Edit: yes it's a minor issue but you notice it during use more than you think43 -
Job offer: "All employees will be provided Macbooks"
Nope! Just nope.
Let your dev chose their equipment, thank you very much.
If they want a Linux laptop, buy them one. If they want a Windows workstation, give it to them. And if and only if they want a Macbook, give them a Macbook.
I used to work in two companies having the requirement to use a Macbook for two years.
I know its pros. I know its cons. My conclusion for me: Never again!15 -
When your MacBook only has 4GBs of ram and you're running a server, chrome, and watching for sass updates.3

Had to enter the Apple world when joining the new job.
Used a good hour locating curly brackets, pipe and tilde on that cryptic keyboard.
User-friendly my ass.15 -
Friend gave me an ancient macBook who was stuck on upgrade as RAM it needed wasn't available.
He: "Do something that I can at least browse"
Me :6 -
Hate to say this.
I regret my last year's purchase of macbook air. I could've easily purchased a powerful laptop with atleast 16 GB RAM and high end Graphics.... Instead i choose to go with this piece of shit for a change.. :/
Also Ubuntu is much user friendly than macos.31 -
so I installed Ubuntu on that macbook because I couldn't be bothered to download Debian again
it's beautiful20 -
Why Apple?
Configuring my new MacBook Pro
• jre ✓
• jdk ✓
• Android studio ....
• let's see what we get when we type "git" in Terminal.. surprise!!! You have to download Xcode which is 5.30GB. Goodness. Can I cry now? 😭😭😭23 -
Upgrading storage.
Windows: Replace HDD with higher capacity.
MacBook Air: Start using SD card slot as external storage.10 -
How does the new MacBook pro outsell Microsoft surface and dell XPS 😖 are there so many "sheep" out there who buy a 1300+ machine with 2 (max 4 ports) not including the 17 dongles you'll need?
Sorry if I offended anyone but I just think the new MBP is ridiculous and is definitely not "Pro"19 -
Employers look for degrees, fellow developers look for stickers - how to tell a developers experience xD6

Third time my Macbook failed to Boot up...
It's time to burn it, but wait... lets take backup.
Ironically, this rant is coming from an Apple user.
(Image clicked and edited on iPad)46 -
My MacBook finally died after 5 years (got it when I was 14). Looking to get a non-Apple replacement for windows/Linux dual boot. Any suggestions? Also, any Linux distro suggestions for a n00b?52
-
Rant.
So I work in the service desk and the moment and one of our clients use Mac's.
One of the end users called up saying that it was being slow and sluggish.
End user: hi my Mac is being slow.
Me: when did you last reboot it?
End user: last night
*Remotely connects*
*Runs uptime in terminal*
Me: are you sure you rebooted it last night?
End user: yes I close the lid every night...
The up time was 68 days...9 -
So, I'm using a new MacBook Air (running Sierra), and while I'm still getting used to it (especially the different Sublime hotkeys), overall it really is quite wonderful. I particularly love the magic touchpad and ease of scrolling/swiping between desktops.
However, I ran into an issue this morning that gave me pause: apparent file caching.
My webpack setup auto-compiles my project when files change, and I noticed something was causing errors -- not really surprising since I was in the middle of fixing the project last night. However, the error it displayed wasn't something I was expecting, and referenced a line I was positive I had removed several hours before calling it a night. Whatever, I was probably mistaken, so I went to remove it.
... It wasn't there.
I double checked that I was looking at the right file. Yep, src/styles/header.scss -- that's the correct file. Figuring webpack was acting up, I killed and restarted it.
Same error.
So whatever, maybe Sublime cached it. Rather unexpected, but possible, and I am on a mac now... so maybe. So, I closed the file and reopened it. The line wasn't there. I did this twice more. It STILL wasn't there. Maybe I'm going crazy...? I checked the file with cat. The line was there. I checked with vim. The line was still there.
OKAY. I've seen a lot of people with beef with Sublime, and I often defended it. but maybe they're actually right. maybe Sublime really isn't the way to go. :( So, I killed and reopened Sublime, and I checked the file again.
The line STILL ISN'T THERE.
Maybe I'm going crazy? I double, triple, quadruple checked the path. all correct.
Alright; let's try again and make sure I do it properly. I closed everything I had open in sublime (two projects), and quit. I reopened Sublime, navigated to the correct path, and reopened the file...
The offending line STILL wasn't there.
I'm angry at this point and just mash the keyboard. I save the resulting garbage, and cat the file again. No visible changes.
KAJSFLK STUPID PIECE OF <redacted>
okay, whatever. Reboots fix everything, right? So I reboot, and keep the option to re-open everything again ticked.
The terminal comes back up, along with half(?) my browsers, but Sublime doesn't. grrrrrrr.
so I cat the damn thing.
GUESS WHAT.
THE GARBAGE IS THERE.
Sublime was doing its job. BUT EVERYTHING ELSE FAILED.
(Oh Sublime, why did I ever question you? 💚)
... but seriously, what the fuck could have caused that? Was the OS caching the file for some programs, but not others? Now I'm questioning the macbook...23 -
Why to most developers who look beautiful are JavaScript developers (looking at you Instagram) and all of them have the MacBook and perfectly clean desk. How's that possible.
If I were to clean up my desk it will take around 45 minutes to complete.21 -
Once I quit this job, I'm never getting a Mac again. I know many like working on one but for me it just gets in my way, it's naggy, the window manager is clunky, homebrew is a crappy package manager compared to pacman and good do I miss focus follow mouse. This is the third time that I've used macos for insert a year and it has actually gotten less pleasant over time.11
-
At first I got excited about the new MacBook Air specs. Then I saw the price... It's a fucking joke to spend so much money for this trash ass hardware you get for it. I mean 1400€ for dual core 8gb ram 128gb ssd?!?!?!
Fuck you9 -
[ATTENTION if you're an apple fan this rant could hurt your religion]
- I used a mc for about 12 hours, only to fix the ios version of an app in Xamarin, it was a nightmare:
- I took the only free mac available, it's the latest macbook pro with the "amazing" touch bar, mac os wash freshly reinstalled
- I switch it on, set it up and after few minutes the screen become black, I thought went in standby (the "amazing" touch bar still was working), I try to switch it on but nothing, I asked for help to mac users in office and they choose a genius solution: forced switch off and on
- Finally after took all the adapters I can start to work
- I notice that's not possible to snap 2 or more windows (without 3rd party apps)
- It's not possible to automatically enlarge the Window almost full screen without cover the bottom and top bar, there is only full screen option but it's not the best
- Inverted scroll by default, on mouse doesn't make sense (on trackpad and touch screen yes)
- Multimonitor sucks...and it doesn't recognize 2 monitors connected in chain
- It's not possible disable standby if you're on battery and you close the lid
- Too often I had to see that annoying rainbow progress also for stupid actions
- Like Windows it's not possible to install 2 software at same time
- Like Windows after some updates is required to reboot
- Finally I switched back to my lovely Dell XPS 15 with Windows 10, but I had to go back on the mac for one more fix, so I search again for the adaptor, I reconnect everything and mouse and keyboard doesn't work, after few minutes the mac reboot by himself and appear a crash report dialog...of course I send them a nice feedback
- At the end of the day, as the mac asked more than once, I install the updates... after about an hour, when we try to switch it on again, it doesn't... so once again forced switch off and on
if you want to use it for nice picture on Facebook or Instagram "just woks" ... but for serious work I'm so grateful to choose a Dell XPS 15 with Windows 1010 -
Bought a macbook air last day with available budget i had - my first apple machine. I find it funny that, I learned cool trackpad gestures on my old Windows laptop that i didn't even know existed! - only because i spend few hrs with this macbook.
Thanks apple.5 -
The year is 2018. You buy the latest mac book pro and also the latest iphone. You can not connect your iphone to your mac, nor use the iphone earphone in your mac without an adapter. Who tought this was a good idea?7
-
My MacBook's graphic card might be dying, or something I have installed or plugged in is causing graphical issues.7
-
Requested an installer for Photoshop for my personal laptop...bcoz of compliance n licensing issue..they gave me company macbook air instead... Ok no problem 😁
-
Just got myself a shiny new MacBook 12".
It’s perfect. The pure perfection.
I got zero lags in every app I use. I type faster than on my mechanical keyboard. Everything is super smooth.
I’m never coming back to Elementary OS. I’m sorry tho, Elementary is great, but macOS is better.22 -
I feel dirty. I just talked someone into buying a Macbook Air.
I mean, it's a good fit for them, but I just don't feel good about it.12 -
My tab key now requires a harder press than it used to earlier. STUPID MACBOOK. This minor inconvenience is a really major annoyance.10
-
😲 For fuck's sake now I have to sell my 2 kidneys instead of 1 if I want to buy a MacBook pro.
Fucking expensive shit.8 -
A customer had spilled beer on his Macbook and brought it in for us to run diagnostics on.
Me: So it looks like his Mac got cultured...
Coworker: I'm not even going to respond.3 -
Me today, after restoring my Macbook Pro
*Installs macports*
*Macports Breaks Xcode*
*Broken Xcode breaks filesystem*
*Broken filesystem corrupts snapshots, rendering them utterly unreadable*3 -
Oh look, a new fancy MacBook Pro 2018.
How come noone is talking about the extreme heat throtteling problem they have with the 2018 laptops?
They can't even hold their base clockspeed when doing compiling code. And they become extremely hot (worse then the last gen, which was already insane).
I know devs/creators/editors want the most powerful computer out there, but supporting something like this is just laughable.
Regards, disapointed customer who tested and returned the laptop after 2 days.17 -
My work just gave me a new MacBook Pro with the Touch Bar. Dear Apples, I can’t even!!!!
What a piece is shit! I can’t charge my phone, plug in my monitor or my mouse without a freakin dongle! Worse of all, I can’t feel the keys to reduce volume, I always have to look does at the Touch Bar, tap twice to reduce the volume. How inefficient!
FU Apple! FU!7 -
I am using a 2012 MacBook pro now, but I am thinking about switching to Linux (Ubuntu) or Windows before university. What do you recommend?39
-
Finally got a good spot for my devrant sticker
(Thanks for the stickers @dfox)
If you want to know why I put it on the Apple logo, in general I quite dislike the Apple brand but I needed one for college.11 -
Today, My 2011 MacBook Pro stopped working. Got it when I was in 5th Grade and had it ever since. We've been in a lot of situations such as GPU Failure, Dead Speakers, Defective IO Shield, etc and it's my humble request to bless my Mac to recover. My warranty expired years ago and I am all on my own. Please recover my friend - Your true friend :(37

How to clean the new Macbook Pro ->
- Clean outside
- Open MacBook
- Mac boots up, fuck
- Shut mac down
- Clean the keyboard
- Accidently boot it up using Touch ID while cleaning inner aluminum, fuck
- Shut mac down again, because haven't done touchpad and screen yet
- Clean remaining parts
- Boot mac up
Efficient! :D1 -
iEscape, the solution for missing keys in your MacBook Pro Late 2016.
Vim users, Apple have you covered!3 -
Ok then!
Time to install Arch Linux on my MacBook Pro...
Coz why not... I wanna try it and see how it runs on this machine 😌😌
Plus... Customization ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I think I can get back to Mac OS right? Just need the USB of Mac? 🤔28 -
What cheapest macbook model has touchbar? This isn’t for me, I’ve read like 2016 2017 model that has touchbar and then I read that it has been discontinued9
-
MacRant: was waiting for a new macbook pro release for awhile to upgrade by old laptop (not mac). Watched the release, had very mixed feeling about it, but still ordered (clinching my teeth and saying sorry to my wallet). Next day looked into alternatives, cacelled the orded to have more time to think, now deciding... I mean cmon, no latest 7th gen processor, no 32gb memory option, 2gb video is ok for non gaming, the whole "big" thing is TouchBar that I DON'T F* NEED. They should drop the "Pro" and name it "Fancy Strip".
So I looked into alternatives, and Dell XPS 15 with maxed spect is twice as juicier, and has not a touch bar, but the whole touch freakin 4k screen, for the less price :/
Just wanted to rant about the new macbook's spec and price and see what you all think of macbook vs alternatives?17 -
Dev 1: Hey, so people's computers seem to crash when someone tries to use a great deal of CPU power or RAM with a single large process, since we are still severely limited by the state of software/hardware interaction in the 1990s.
Dev 2: Why not set the max clock speed at 60% and then double the price? Nobody will know.
David Attenborough: And at this moment, the modern Macintosh Computer was born. -
It is time... to rant about macs!
No, seriously - I had such a different experience about which not many talk in real life or pretend that it never happens....
Model: 2015 mid MBP 15" with second to highest specs (don't have dedicated gpu).
Rattling fucking toy.... Yea, it rattles! If you shake/move ir sit in trait/bus - it non-stop rattles as a fucking toy. Worst part? It's confirmed issue by apple and it manifacturing issue that they are not keen on fixing!!!! WTF? We have 4 macs in our office - all of them fucking rattles... God help me how annoying that is. (Lose LCD control panel that unsticks from glue. Replacing it solves the issue for 1 month if you carry it anywhere).
Constant fucking crashing/updates.... Every morning I wake up and don't have an app that requires confirmation for restart - it's restarted. YAY, turning on all apps once again.... Why you may ask? Well, because if you tinker with software in any way - it fails to update it and hell breaks lose. It's been a long time since High-Sierra came around and the issue is still there (not running Mojave as it conflicts with soft I have... Woo!). Tried few times - updates fail. Resolution? Reinstall OS!
OS conflicts with applications - damn... People told me it works out of the box.... Yeah, as long as you don't upgrade the OS - then it breaks. Why? Well, because.
Piece of shit power supply. With 4 of our office power supplies - 2 of them failed twice withing warranty and once afterwards... Really? Not to mention that all 4 are starting to shear the sleeve or already did (mine is just wrapped with white electrical tape to give it a support... lol).
Bluetooth - who the hell needs that in mac, right? Well, people do. To start with - it conflicts with 2.4GHz wireless network - you might have one of those and not both at the same time. Next thing is using a device that needs constant connection (mouse, headphones, keyboard - non apple branded) - shit... They can't stay connected for more than an hour without any issues... Constant battle to re-connect it, to re-pair the device and all due to smart apple bluetooth settings. Hell, my mouse (logitech MX master) was even printing random symbols in some applications if moved. All of the issues went away after using a bluetooth dongle... WOO!!!!
Xcode... Ahh, you may never prepare your mac if you don't download 17GB of fucking xCode libraries that enables some tools to be installed/runned as you can NOT get them in any other way and you have to install full xCode software in order to get them... YAY! 17GB wasted on my 256GB SSD that I can't upgrade. GREAT!
OsX applications - ah, don't get offended but if you are using them and you are fine with them - you are probably a monkey that loves being told what to do. You can't customise any actions, you can't configure it the way you like - either you accept their default workflow or go kill yourself. Yep... Had issues with calendar, mail, iMessages, safari... None of them fit my needs :)
Resolution scaling... Fucking hell, the display is 2880 x 1800 but all you let me to use is 1440x900 without scaling? Am I blind to you? Scaling the resolution means that you are fucked if some applications don't support scaling very well. Looking at you Jetbrains - your IDES suck at scaling and slows down the pc to a potato....
Now the pros - keyboard is way better than the new ones, trackpad is GREAT - no need for mouse (using it on external 4k displays only), the battery life is great - getting around 6h of continues development time, 8 if using sublime instead of phpStorm and well, that's about it...
To clarify:
I've bought this device due to the fact that at that time mac and windows pc's with similiar specs costed the same while windows pc sucked with their quality of the device and trackpad... Now the situation is better and when time comes for a next upgrade - it's going to be one of these:
Razer Blade 15, Dell XPS 15, Lenovo Carbon X1 series.
And of course - LINUX. I've had enough issues with windows, and had enough of retardness of apple ecosystem, so switching it is a must for me.
Disclaimer: I might be an unhappy customer, a bit picky but I'd like my device to be setted up as I like and continue to have that until I don't like, not until the company decides to break it. Not to mention that paying almost a yearly salary in my country for one device - I'd expect it to be at least reliable and work without issues....
Rant over.
ps. You can disagree with me, this is my personal experience with MBP over the last 3 years :)10 -
Just got my stickers in the mail today. Damn good quality. Didn't come with any documentation though. Needless to say the cat is now missing in action.9
-
My new MacBook Pro finally arrived so I could finally install the stickers that I got back in April already. \o/8
-
So my MacBook pro (retina 2013) is almost 5 years old. I like os x so was shopping for a new one, 3 grand for very marginal performance boost and a touchable bar.... Hmm. I guess my current can survive until apple makes a laptop with some balls.4
-
I just earned my first experience with a "MacBook Pro"..
1. Started in safe mode (reboot solved that)
2. Safari crashed..
I see what you mean with innovation.. NOT!4 -
Was having a Good day , My code was compiling, Android Studio did find the fucking 'R' In his goddamn libraries and eventually got my strong coffee by my desk.
Suddenly i'm hit up with one of Noob friends saying that he installed Windows on His MacBook Air...
My ears and eyes starting bleeding and all that came in my mind was why the heck did you do this, why the heck did you coat your Chocolate truffle with the fucking Mud. Why didn't you just hammered the keyboard and the screen before doing . I had to sleep after this and all that i saw in my dreams was fucking apples and windows.
Please for God's sake don't do this , wouldn't be a sin more deep than this onejoke/meme mac windowssucks windows 10 apple windows is shit ruined fun 😭 developer life microsoft windows apple macbook windowsshit5 -
I think my MacBook Pro from early 2011 is ready for retirement 😔 froze two times today during gaming...11
-
Pro tip: Don't cheap out on dongles for newer macbook models.. Bought a (somewhat) working Chinese dongle with 4 ports. Fire hazard and I think my 13" mbp just farted a fireball4
-
Needs tidying and I’m not exactly using it for work at the moment... but this is my home office / bedroom setup.
There’s an Alienware Alpha hiding behind the MacBook, but it hasn’t actually been on more than once since the MacBook came home... 😂3 -
I use a MacBook Pro at home and a Windows laptop at work. The trackpad on the Windows laptop is flaky, so I prefer to use it with an external mouse.
However, my desk at home is kind of glossy/reflective, so if I’m working at home on the Windows laptop and trying to use the mouse, it doesn’t work well at all.
Since I don’t actually have a mousepad (I only ever use the trackpad on the MacBook Pro), I started looking around the house for something I could use instead that would make the mouse work better. I needed something large, rectangular, non-reflective, heavy enough that it wouldn’t slide around the desk as I moved the mouse...5 -
I have to admit to something. I betrayed my Assus Zenbook and got a 2018 Macbook Pro.
It's not because there was something wrong with the Zenbook but I really wanted the Macbook for reasons I can't explain.
This is slightly hypocritical since I have been known to bash on Apple.
I hope I don't regret the decision.49 -
Apple is really worried about their huge failure with the i9 6-cores, worried they won’t sell.
How do I know? Well, this...3 -
When you make a Linux distro look as close to macOS as possible because you can’t afford a MacBook 😩14
-
Around a week ago I asked my mentor(lecturers friendly sidekick buddy 'o pal) if in iOS dev(the very next subject) I could virtualize, rent in cloud or run a hackintosh instead of buying a Mac. My mentor sounded enthusiastic and asked the lecturer of the next subject, who promptly said no, he did not support or recommend students who tried any of these approaches because in the past he had encountered students who have run into performance issues and we're unable to compile some things. Most likely those students were unable to setup GPU passthrough and whatnot.
However this is the exact point of a VM. It's exactly the same as if you had a real Mac. I believe this is just them being lazy. Tbh, this is an IT course they should be writing guides on how to do virtualisation, not preventing it.
Looks like I'm headed to the Apple store :(4 -
I finally bit the bullet and got a 2018 macbook pro i7 with 1 terabyte ssd. I've been needing a personal laptop for development for awhile. I thought about going full Linux but it's tough finding Linux laptops that support thunderbolt 3 charging.
I tried to make Windows and WLS work. But it's a pain getting my Golang, GCP, and Kubernetes workflow setup on it. I keep having to jump command prompts and it annoys the shit out of me. Going multi monitor helps a lot, but I like to be at coffee shops and code.
I feel sick a out giving Apple more money especially $3,000. But it was money well spent. My workflow is seamless and unlike on my Windows laptop I dont spend 3 to 4 days just setting up my environment.16 -
Anyone else hate their Macbook Pro 2018? RIGHT after the return policy the speakers start acting like it has fucking tourette's, plus my machine randomly SHUTS DOWN.
Apple Store "Genius": "Yup, we gotta send it in for repair, 10 business days."
10 business days without my work laptop, gee thanks asshole, at least be a little more empathetic about it.
My 2015 Macbook Pro gave me ZERO problems. The only reason why I upgraded was that compiling took forever (React Native).
If I didn't have to work with Xcode I would just sell this thing and buy a PC laptop. (The Surface book looks nice =))11 -
Woke up this morning to my Macbook completely drained.
Again. 😒
Turns out my USB-C cable had dislodged itself.
Again.
But what *really* pisses me off is why the fuck is my computer completely drained overnight? Did it have the screen on the whole time? I swear I've come down in the morning and the screen on my Macbook is still on. I wouldn't be surprised.
Apple is really losing their touch.2 -
Hello fellow coders can you help me here plz.
I'm really confused whether to buy MACBOOK PRO 13 INCH or SURFACE PRO 4. Both of i5/8gbRam/256ssd specs. Price almost same in India.
My main use is programming ( web apps/ open source) + portability.
Factors I like in macbook pro:
1) unix based
2) best service here in India ( heard from answers on Quora )
3) DURABILITY ( heard from answers on Quora ) ( will last for many years without any glitch).
Factors I like in Surface pro 4:
1) its ultraportability
2) pen & touch
3) better typing experience ( since I code/blog for long hours)
4) native bash support
5) sexier than MBP :P
I really like SP4 over MBP but I'm worried about its durability and service(in India).
What are your thoughts on this guyz?41 -
My employer uses latest and greatest macbooks. It's fuking awesome. I wasn't a fan until I found the ease of android and iOS development on it. I even started using Atom for web development. And I bought a Mac mini for a dedicated jenkins server. I don't think I'll ever go back to windows. There's just no point. I know it's expensive but it gets the job done. No more fukin mac VMs on VMware. Fuk that shit.22
-
When your MacBook Pro is due for an upgrade, but you don't want to buy a model right before a new release a couple months from now...5
-
It still amazes me that people willingly choose apple. After being given a MacBook for work, I sort of expected it to grow on me a bit. But no, it forces you to do everything in their stupid apple way. It is form over function in its purest form.12

Anyone have one of the new MacBook Pros with Touchbar? I'm looking for some project ideas to work on.
I already am working on a project for the Pi-hole project (network wide ad-blocking) but I am looking for some other good ideas. I think Apple's view of the Touchbar fell short, but as developers I think it opens up a lot of possibilities to use it as a great information/monitoring tool.
I am also still learning Objective-C and Swift so I am a newbie.6 -

My BFF just got his master degree in social engineering (I don't know if that's translatable this way, but whatever), so I come over to drink a beer with him. We start discussing courses he had and then...
Him : I don't know why they hired a web developper for this course.
Me : A web dev?
H : Well, more of a web designer actually. That explains why she was so severe about our PowerPoints design...
M : A web designer? Oh let me guess : kind of a tech hipster, Starbuck's on the desk, and she has a Macbook?
H : Actually... uh, yes. How did you guess?
I really don't like stereotypes, but sometimes it is just too easy 😂...
No offense intended to web designers though.4 -
Macbook or Microsoft Notebook?
I have a budget of 1600€.
I need it for developing mainly c# and web-dev.21 -
Apple: Mojave update breaks OpenGL code and causes a black screen? It's ok, no rush, nothing to fix here. Anyways OpenGL is deprecated right?
I literally spent a couple of hours debugging my engine because it would show a black screen until the rendering window was moved or resized. Only to find out it's a known OpenGL bug after the Mojave update. No biggie.5 -
When the battery in your MacBook Pro explodes , buckling the trackpad and prying off the bottom 👍🏽3

Just got my new MacBook Pro, so I’m in the process of installing everything..
so, Xcode has been installing for over one hour... is this normal ? 🤔20 -

I’m really struggling to see WHY IN THE HELL it was necessary to delete my FUCKING NETWORK PROFILES to update this FRUIT FUCKED ALUMINUM SHIT BOX!
How did they test this and be like, oh, yea, you can’t connect automatically to ANY of the WiFi networks you have saved, because we deleted all the network profiles. That is acceptable, it won’t cause anyone any real problems.
Sure you need to update some shit. But why are you even touching that part of the disk? Damn you filthy lying fruit fuckers!1 -
If macbooks are so shitty, why do every great developer I see owns it ? Even @dfox owns it ..... Why o why !!33

Ordered a MacBook and it comes in a few days. Any must have apps for MacOs? Also, what are some resources to learn how to make Apps in MacOs?25
-
Alright, somebody enlighten me:
What do MacBooks have that other laptops don't (other than the touchpad and the OS)?43 -
I know that not everyone here is Mac friendly; but my job just helped me purchase a new MacBook Pro, and it will be arriving tomorrow. It's the new one with the AMD 560 x 4GB, and touch bar. I'm literally shaking I'm so excited!!11

When you are installing a macOS update on a 2016 Macbook Pro and it is stuck on “About 0 seconds remaining” for 3 hours...2
-
Fucking cocksucker, I shut my macbook down at home, go to college and BAM the FUCKING THING WONT START ANYMORE
LIKE WTF IT HAS BEEN 15 MINUTES BETWEEN WORKING FINE AND NOT WORKING AT ALL FUCKING PIECE OF UTTER SHIT
Now I probably have to reinstall and all that fucking hell,
(ps its en encrypted drive installation so I can log in see the progress bar and then it shuts down)11 -
Finally got my new MacBook Air. I was beyond anxious to put the first stickers on it.
(The other devRant one is on the inside.)5 -
I bought a Macbook about 6 month ago and I became in love with development in it... I've got a fucking MSI dream PC sitting here with two monitors acting as a glorified paperweight...
Its so weird because I know I could just put some Linux distro and use it more often but its almost like so many years of Windows make you doubt that you can ever fully leave the ecosystem... Its like some sort of sick Stockholm syndrome.6 -
On 2016 I bought a new macbook pro 13’ 2015 mid. I loved it, I still love it, it works so smoothly even after 3 years and I am restarting it only once a month (or even less). I loved it so much, that I completely moved to whole ecosystem: new iphone X - which I love too, apple watch - which is awesome for my cycling workouts.
Anyway, a few month ago I changed a job, and when they asked what laptop I want it’s just natural that I requested macbook pro. And now I regret it...
I got macbook pro 13’ 2018, and it’s worst piece of shit I ever used. My old budget lenovo laptop for 400 euros worked way better than this crap.
* top touch bar is a fucking joke, if I want to skip/pause music, change/mute volume I need at least 3 clicks - good job apple, that’s super productive. I would rant about esc key too, but I kind of got used to it, still I prefer to feel it. But nah, got new keyboard so it doesn’t matter.
* sometimes it doesn’t charge, the only way to fix it - restart.
* if I close laptop it doesn’t sleep, that means every time I go away I need to explicitly tell my laptop to sleep. That wasn’t a case in 2015 model.
* after sleep mode it doesn’t detect my jack connected headphones anymore, so I need to replug them - this one is super annoying, considering I am working in open office.
* Something is always crashing or not working, in 2 months there was no a single time that it would last a single week without restarting.
So yeah, fuck you apple, not ever again gonna buy any of your products nor gonna recommend it to anyone.8 -
Always thought programming on a MAC would increase productivity. Got one, now all I do is changed iTerm themes.4
-
So apple might finnaly offer a MacBook air revision that is under $1000 USD this year... Let's hope it's not too much in Australia and a MacBook air might not be so fucking pointless now!12
-
This is to anyone that has a MacBook Pro that has a Touch Bar.
When you’ve programmed on the MacBook have you ever implemented the Touch Bar’s accessibility into the application? And is it easier or more out of the way to try to implement it into the application. Also could non OSX related languages be used or can only Swift, Objective-C, etc
Only curiousity, my MacBook Air doesn’t have one, and I’m gonna eventually upgrade to a pro and I’ve heard good things about the Touch Bar but not about using it in applications.3 -
Dear Apple, your asshole is what's innovative because all you produce anymore is expensive excrement.1
-
When you go to update your Mac think great I’ll go chill out for half hour, let it update and hit restart, then come back to your computer and realise Mamp stopped your computer restarting without entering a password. FFS rookie error put in the password computer restarts to update. “Calculating time remaining...” 40 minutes. I’m so fucking bored right now just staring at the screen and having a rant.1

I got my new(to me) MacBook Pro last week, provided by work. I've got all my setup and config done, for the most part, and I've noticed something.
Performance is shit. Has anyone else noticed this about the 2017 and later models? The 2015 model I had before was much, much smoother. Just zooming windows, a previously butter-smooth experience, is noticeably choppy. I/O performance is garbage too. I have a small iotest script that just writes a string a couple hundred times to disk, deletes it, and repeats this activity 100,000 times. On my Linux machine at home with six year old hardware, this takes about three seconds. On my new system76 laptop it takes just over a second. On the 2017 MacBook Pro, it takes about forty seconds.
The 2017 and 2018 models are a direct downgrade in performance. Why isn't anyone talking about this?11 -
There's seriously a girl here following DAE (Game development) with one of them fancy tiny macbooks. Yes the one without escape. I wish her good luck and congratulations on being rich and a retard who ignores school advice on laptops4
-
Ugh, I hate having to port data from windows to Mac. I myself use Linux and windows. My mom got her first Mac for her birthday, but she needed her 200gb of pictures on I cloud. So I thought it would be like Dropbox, put them in a folder or start an upload and then it processes and is on the cloud. NO. It’s a hellscape as Apples windows programs are awful and I’m ashamed they exist. There is no indication of when they have successfully uploaded, you just have to figure it out. It also doesn’t help when macOS Is oversimplified. Ugh. I ended up taking my terabyte external and having to wait 3 hours for files to transfer and put those on the MacBook. I hate I cloud more than comic sans. I know Dropbox isn’t great or even good for security reasons, but it’s a hell of a lot better than I cloud BULLSHIT.
-
Someone hates apple for macbook keyboard sound. I hate apple for poor-quality anti-reflective coating on the screen, which is erased gradually when my laptop is closed.
P.s. macbook pro retina mid2014 13'2 -
So I decided to ditch Apple MacOS go with Linux so I’m the process of trying to sell my MacBook Pro which seems like it’s going to take a while since I don’t have eBay so if you’re in the USA and are interested let me know. Now the trying to decide which Linux distro, I’m currently leaning towards Arch Linux plus looking for the best laptop workstation that’s supported by Linux seems like its going to be a headache. On a good note my unixstickers arrive in the mail yesterday.7

Any macbook owners here faced similar display issue? My macbook air seems to have a minor display issue. See this brightness difference from the middle. Sometimes, brightness varies suddenly like when flickering. Should I take it to Apple store or whatever? Or just ignore this?4

Guys help something has plagued my mind, I was thinking about building a new PC and swapping over to AMD from Intel and NVIDIA... But after Mac as a daily laptop I'm thinking about spending the equal amount on a MacBook Pro and living the dock life.... What have I become?!

Jesus fucking christ how can the latest Macbook be such a piece of crap? I'm currently travelling and wondering why I'm getting such an atrocious 40% packet loss and round-trip time up to 3 seconds.
Then I remember having Wi-Fi issues in the office with certain adapters, one of which I'm currently using, while I'm tethering over Wi-Fi ... disconnecting the adapter yields a perfect 0% packet loss and 30ms RTT. It Just Works® my ass. This is _one_ of the things that suck about the macbook.10 -
Just saw an advert for a macbook Air in a local computer store. They called it "power. To. The tenth power"1

MacBook died, currently in the lab, have a TERRIBLE dual core T4200, 3GB ram temp laptop replacement with VISTA.

Disclaimer!!!
Do at your own risk.
-----------------------------------
- Take a strong magnet, like a neodymium magnet.
- Hold it in your hand.
- Move your hand across a Macbook 15"'s keyboard. Say from left to right or vice versa. Almost touching they keys.
You'll see the screen dimming. If you just hold it there for a little longer, it'll lock your macbook. It's funny, but I am not sure if it's doing some damage to hardware.9 -
What use is a MacBook?
Cause all it is is an overpriced laptop, that has the basic functionality and features that a regular and cheaper laptop has.
My friend and I concluded that all it's used for is to say you HAD $1000.9 -
Couldn’t get my Mac start once I closed the lid.
Didn’t realise it goes sleep automatically once the power supply disconnected 😂13 -
Buys macbook starting uni because it should last six years. Breaks in 3 years, new mobo, new mobo again, new macbook, new screen and finally I'm out of warranty now and the screen breaks again (retina macbook lose some kind of coating because the screen touches the keys). Made it five years without paying any extra but I have an HP laptop costing less than half that has done seven years with no issues.3

Few months ago: Need a new Macbook, I'll just buy the cheap 128GB and replace the ssd myself...
I hate myself as much as I hate Apple now1 -
Need Help
I need a new laptop mainly for Android Development and I am thinking of buying Macbook Air 2017.
Can you suggest me if it will work fine or should I look for other laptops.
And can you suggest some good laptops to buy in India.
BTW this will be my first Mac.22 -
Which Programming Laptop do you recommend? It should be light, thin and 13". My budget is 1800$. My current favorite would be a Macbook Pro but I was always a Windows kinda guy so I'm not really sure...37
-
Got a mac to use for work, and to be honest, I never thought that I would say this... I kind of like it.. The gripe I have with mac's is that it's not user upgradable having the ssd and ram soldered on. If this weren't the case I would probably buy one myself10
-
Yo, have some questions for all you Macbook devs here.
#0. What language do you mostly write in?
#1. Do any of you dualboot / use VM's on your Mac?
#2. Is it better or worse (in your experience) to code on a Macbook in general?
Asking bc Im thinking on getting one for The thin and lightness of it.16 -
[question][laptop][macbook]
Hey guys!
What's your opinion about the 2012 Macbook Pro (13")?
I'm currently in midschool and I going to listen Computer Science next year in the local university. (I'm from Hungary.)
I want to buy a laptop (maybe a secondhand one), and a friend of mine suggested this model, but I never used a Mac or OSX, I'm a Windows/Linux&PC guy.10 -
Well I'm new to MacBook and it's OS, for like 1.5 months now, got pretty much hands on it to have my command over it. And as of now i am loving it ( since i came from Windows) judge me for it if you want to..🙄
Can you guys suggest some **MUST HAVE** tools/ programs/ apps, related or non-related to a programmer to make life easy on OSX?7 -

#need_help
Dear all,
I'm trying to make a choice, a choice that won't make me regret it for the few years advanced, I'm in a dilemma, I don't know which MacBook should I get for my everyday life, I currently work as an iOS developer (Learned iOS using all kinds hackintoshes, yeah I never bought a single apple computer, yet), and always have motivation to learn new stuff (from machine learning, to web development, to making games with unity (or whatever engine), hell I even like to design stuff from time to time using Photoshop, sketch, I sometimes do video editing using premiere and after effects), and I yet have to choose which laptop to get, I got only one week to make the choice so...
Here are the options:
The new MacBook Pro 2016 (Touch Bar edition):
Pros: 'Latest' and 'greatest', have thunderbolt ports which makes it (sort of) future proof, TouchId for unlocking the laptop using a fingerprint.
Cons: You need a damn dongle everywhere, no escape key (Which I use for the autocomplete feature in Xcode), and this touch bar (Which I really have no idea if i will ever use it other than the nyan cat app for 5 minutes), plus I heard about battery issues with it (don't know if they resolved it or not), fucking huge trackpad, and no fucking MagSafe!
The previous model MacBook Pro 2015:
Pros: Ports, lots of them, small trackpad (Which you don't have to worry about your palm screwing up your work), and MagSafe! (Which I honestly don't know if it'll make any difference for my usage)
Cons: has old CPU from Haswell generation (I know that it won't feel different, it's just that I like to have parts that are the 'latest')
Now some questions, for people who have the old MacBooks and new MacBooks:
For the ones with old MacBook:
If you were given the choice to replace the old MacBook for the new one for free, would you go for it?
After all this time, how's the battery performance? is it still great from the time you bought it?
Foe the ones with new MacBook:
Does the huge-ass trackpad interfere your work day?
Do you miss magsafe to a point where you really want to throw out the new laptop and go back to previous model?
Did you get used to carry out dongles everywhere?
Did you like the TouchBar? Does it help you in your everyday work? from designing to coding to whatever, do you think that now you can't live without it?
How's the battery performance?
Is programming on it joyable? or the new keyboard and touchpad are just a meh?

In addition to that I would love that you guys detail me your experience and answer some questions that I posted above, I would be very, very grateful.2 -
So I'm a developer trainee. My development machine ? - was given a MacBook pro that was used by previous developer. The home screen is filled with random project files and documents.
Try to click on the pad, doesn't work, realized you have to press it real hard on side to click , wth, crappy touchpad. Back to setup.
I guess create a new account. Need to make an apple ID, heck no, create account without it, logon and just realized, shit all the tools need be installed..
Go to app store, need an apple id, heck.. , create an id, login, realize most of the tools aren't in app store...
Log back in crazy's account, power windows virtual machine..
Desktop filled with shyteload of files.. try to personalize windows, Windows isn't activated.. the heck.
Give up, just install vscode on corporation desktop machine for now, while the MacBook is a paperweight, and my shield in case of a gun situation
Better I see the crazy Dev who worked on this machine, and hit em in head with this paperweight.undefined developer that covers all the paper underneath mac wth mcshytebook my new paperweight macbook wth!?!? wth??! windows the struggle2 -
For developers MacBook pro is great. I pray to Git god daily for a MacBook pro. Hope Git god bless me with a MBp15

i have a confession to make. I just bought a iphone 7 and already had an macbook pro. I think the hipster live is taking over5

So, I recently switched from a windows laptop (XPS 13) to a macbook pro and my friend has been bugging me about whether I'll ever go back. He is a wannabe frontend developer and wants a windows laptop. No matter what I tell him, he seems to have tunnel vision. What are your thoughts on this? And what is your personal experience with Windows vs Apple for development?
(Pls don't kill me, it's my first post on devrant, thnx)16 -
Goddamned apple. "Just works" my ass.
My girlfriend's 2014 MBP told her an update had already downloaded and she had no choice but to install it, which doesn't bother me. Now, though, it tries to update, then fails, and tells you to run diagnostics. Diagnostics says nothing is wrong, and says to contact support and it boots a minimal version of the OS that only runs a minimal version of safari. You try to access the chat feature and it never fully loads the chat interface. I can probably restore it, but I wanna know what was wrong. It's a really expensive brick right now.4 -
Been using Macbook Pro for 6 months now for development work. Except for the retina display and the battery, I don't like a shit. I would love to go back to ubuntu and a normal keyboard layout.4
-
Well finnaly had someone wanting to swap my laptop for a Macbook, may be an old MacBook Pro from mid 2009 but hey, it's a Mac and should be more than powerful for what I need, plus you never realise how much more lightweight and optimised macOS is compared to windows until you get into it!5
-
While working on our matlab project, my laptop just suddenly stop responding. Even the task manager isn't responding! Everything is fucked up and the file hasn't been saved yet. Then a friend of mine started saying that Mac is better than windows and im like:
"Bitch pls linux is the best"
I won't spend a lot of money to buy a macbook. I'd rather spend money buying a better laptop with great specs and dualboot Linux alongside Windows.5 -
Am I the only one annoyed that the headphone jack on the new MacBook Pro is on the right side? Being right handed, the headphones cable really bothers me when I'm using the mouse.2
-
What a pain it is getting Linux/Arch setup perfectly on a MacBook Pro. Overheating like a mofo. ACPI shitstorm, integrated GPU disabled by default and need a hack to enable it outside of macos, fan control is wack.
Solved most of this crap but still can't completely disable the Nvidia GPU, so both integrated and dedicated are powered on. Frustrated AF.2 -

To all the Mac users in here, I want to get in on the iOS app business, but I kinda don't have money for a new macbook. SO! What are your experiences with MacBooks older than 2013? I'm talking about the Air and Pro. Keep in mind that I won't need to run VMs in this, as I have another new Windows PC fully loaded.16 -

So I’m thinking about buying my very first MacBook but I can’t decide which one to get. Im between the 2017 MacBook Air 256Gb or a 2015 MacBook Pro 128Gb. I’m afraid that if I don’t get 256Gb it won’t be enough for college and work. Just a little background for you guys, I’m a software engineer student and also an iOS/RoR intern at a software development company.
Please help me decide which one to get!12 -
Finally an error I can understand with ease. Up until now, I’ve been getting these weird arbitrary errors that make no sense to me.
I tried to wake my MacBook and the thing hung. I have it some time, and it restarted, restored all windows, and let me know it was a “Sleep Wake Failure”.
Honestly I don’t mind getting an error occasionally. But when the error says “UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP” while I’m gaming on Windows, it annoys me.
Also having WebKit crash the webpage on me without telling me what happened also gets me mad.
TL;DR: Make understandable error messages.2 -
I've always been a strong critic of the mac operating system and apple in general for they're overpriced products. few months back my old laptop kicked the bucket and repairing it was not an option as i was sick of charging the laptop after every 3-4 hours and had to purchase a new laptop immediately. loooking at my options around 50k rs or 700$ all windows laptops available in indian markets sucked (except for lenovo 320s) so i made the shift to macbook air 2017.my daily work involves photoshop illustrator and a dash of premiere pro. I also work on nodeJS and python using the pycharm and atom IDEs. After using it for a month i feel in love with mac platform and macos. Its a wonderful experience. gone are the days of crashes and the windows updates (ugh). the boot of the laptop is like magic and softwares like wmware imovie and notes keynote are f**king awesome. Long hours of work have become fun rather than hell dealing with constant windows gimmicks and bad battery optimisation on linux.
An explanation why all developers (except for the ones who require high powered gpus) graphic designers should shift to macos rn.
Advantages of using mac
No forced updates update whenever now or a f'ing month later no probs.
better battery optimisation than linux
no more installing os again and again (ubuntu)
better vm than virtualbox (vmware)
terminal for running bash commands
no crahes
Xcode platform
trackpad is worlds better than the best windows trackpad
Disadvantages
some softwares not available for macos
storage is generally less on macbooks
UI is simple (less elaborated than windows)
Workarounds
get a vm and install linux(vmware fusion 8)
ps. u may not need it though
wine and wine bottler for using windows apps
get a microsd to sd adapter for macbook and expand storage5 -
Anyone had any luck installing Linux as the boot OS on a Macbook?
I have an old Macbook Pro with a dead battery that I'd like to tinker with, and while it looks possible from what I've found online, I'm curious if anyone here's had any luck.7 -
I bought a MacBook Pro Retina wanting to upgrade the memory, then realized the Retina models have it soldered onto the motherboard.
I need to run Visual Studio for ASP.NET development but can't fathom paying $80 for a Parallels license at the moment. I've tried VirtualBox, but the RAM usage is really high for the 4GB I'm limited to.

Any react native or godot dev here? I just want to ask a question, is macbook air good enough for react native and godot development?
Good enough for react native is it can open xcode, vscode, chrome, and ios simulator at same time without any problems. And for godot, I don't know I never use godot before 😁 but I really want to make a game using godot.11 -
Macbook pro is - at least where I live - considered expensive. Some of my friends have cheaper cars. I really hesitate to buy even a 2015 version, as thats the one I want. Im thinking about buying a used one ffs.
Now yesterday im chatting with this girl, exchanging nudes and so, when on one of her pictures I saw the apple logo, a macbook, I bet its an air, no its a pro, god damnit. So I asked her, that laptop is that yours? She said yes, she buyd it a few years ago with money she collected, because she photographs a lot (dah) and its really good to photoshop on that thing.
Ffs I want one for my work, which pays well, actually I can buy a brand new macbook with one month salary, why am I having these problems deciding? Am I the only one, again?
Wtf is wrong with me5 -
All MacBook haters, please leave, NOW!
I suppose that you, who are reading now, are using MacBook. Do you feel the same, that the touchpad is so fucking amazing so you will not ever touch a mouse again? 😊
P.S. MacBook haters, still here? fuck off!!!18 -
Finally purchased my t480s for university after mooonths of reading reviews and reddit posts. I hoped that the mbp refresh wouldn't be so expensive :( I've got a mid 2009 from work which no one used so they let me take it home and yeah to be honest i like it very much. i wanted learn programming for ios & android, but honestly paying 2,3K€ (student price for the 13" i5 16gb ram 512gb ssd) and having the risk of a (maybe or maybe not) failing keyboard and no chance of upgrading it is too risky for me and my wallet :( I paid 1,5K€ (again student price) for the thinkpad (i7 16gb ram 512gb ssd and the mx150) and i think i'll love it :)
Just wanted to share with you guys :) (i hope i didn't start a pc vs mac fight haha)2 -
So I got the new macbook pro 15 with touchbar .... this is my first macbook that I have ‚issues‘ with.
* the new butterfly keaboard doesnt feel as good as the old one
* ... abd its friggin loud!
* the keyboard backlight just randomly drops out and forces me to cold reboot WTF??
* they bigger left/right cursor buttons make it so hard to feel where you are, that I constantly confuse up and down
* the touchbar is basically unusable for a keyboard centric person like me. It forces me too look down to the keys!
* I constantly hit the esc bc im used to have one finger there to hit it if needed, but now im forced to hover it bc otherwise it is pressed
* and why of fucking why did apple remove magsafe??? Now i dont even see anymore if is is being charged without turning the screen on
* i hate the usb ports too, why not even add a free usbc to usba port? (Well, i guess bc it would make the macbook even more expensive... free wouldnt be free anyway i guess)
It is way more powerful though, but the time i would buy a personal one is over and will probably never come back.
Im a happy hackintosh user btw 😅4 -

My laptop is way to old, and I been looking on to a MacBook. I never used OSX, and I develop mainly in Unity with VS, and I also do Web stuff and administrate servers with Windows remote. It's a good idea to switch?20 -
This is how my macbook keybboard writes the letter "b" it’s not happening all the time though, sometimes it outputs b and and other times bb, wtf I only pressed it once. And it's happening randomly, fuck this shit, I cant even take it to apple customer service and leave it there for a week or more. I guess I'm living with it and don't bbother fixing it. fuck b errr6

I will start my master in computer science at the end of 2018 and I am looking for a new Notebook that I can use for my studies.

So I wanted to ask if anyone has any experience with apples macbook pro or some similar model of another manufacturer, which works well with linux distributions in this field?
My budget is about 2000$7 -
Ok devs, need your help a little bit. Planning on buying a laptop. I'm confused between these two:
1) System76 Serval WAS
2) MacBook pro
Which one should I get and why? Need your opinion. Also, open to any other suggestions.4 -
Are there some good external portable macbook pro monitors that have the vertical/portrait functionality? Also, it should be rechargeable and should not get power from my laptop when there's still a charge. (I use MBP 15" 2018 model)
We are agile at work (all use laptops, no permanent seats) and I need an extra portale monitor because there are no provided external monitors to use.
I was thinking of buying and iPad pro as a portable external monitor via catalina sidecar but it is laggy somehow and very expensive. Thanks! 🙂23 -

I'd really love to be able to use designing tools like Photoshop and Illustrator while doing web development works at the same time, but I'm not sure whether it's worth the price. What do you think?5 -
Has anyone managed to install a Linux Distro over the Boot camp partition on a newer MacBook pro with touch bar? My old 2012 MBP had a tri-boot on it because it had Mint, Win10 and macOS living together in almost harmony. Now I have a 2017 MBP and I can't even get it to live boot from a USB (a type-C one at that! Because of the Nexus 5X I have lots of type-C accessories).3

Unable to run internet on company provide Mac book ..fucking. stupid....Tried to remove proxy but not working..Even wifi getting connected and for a second it runs the internet.

WTF is happening to macbook speakers on bootcamp. Win10 is sucking all the good beats and bass from every sound wave that tries to find it's way out. and the volume is too fucking low.
Anyone here was able to find a fix?6 -
I can't decide if I want to buy a macbook or a good quality windows laptop and run linux on it. My current laptop is way too old and slow so I need to buy a new one. Macbooks are way too overpriced with their €1500 imo and was more thinking of a €1000 budget. I mostly develop in Java and Python (and a lot of web development). What would you guys recommend?11

I want to buy a laptop. I got a suggestion like ssd laptops are very fast. But I got confused wether to go for Mac 128ssd or windows 256ssd.
The reason for above comparison is both price are more or less same.
Give me your suggestion please9 -
I have been developing laravel projects with PHP 7.2 for a month on my new macbook air. Today i had to work on php5.6 project and got really frustrated cause homebrew doesn't have php5.6.
Should i install ubuntu?
Is there anyone using ubuntu on macbook air?
What are the problems?10 -
So I'm getting a new job in a legal software company and I wanted to ask your opinion on computers. I know many are very biased towards OSX and windows and prefer linux but I'm trying my luck lmao.
I'm currently on a late 2012 macbook pro and its starting to fizzle out on me.
Not a bit fan of the new macbooks because of dongles and no direct HDMI. I was wondering if the surface laptop 2 was any good compared? All the reviews online are basically paid to praise it and the reviews on reddit are polarized. I prefer laptops that are thin and in aluminum.12 -
My MacBook Pro crucial memory RAM died after 4 years of using.
Any brand suggestions compatible with Mac ?7 -
I was getting frustrated with my 4 years old work MacBook with 8 GB of RAM, insufficient to run 2 Vagrant boxes simultaneously. Conveniently the letter E just stopped working and IT couldn't fix it, they now have to order a new one.1

My MacbookPro won't shutdown fully. Also while on sleep mode, my apps automatically gets closed for auto shutdown (which will be prevented by iTerm's dialogue box for session saving).
I tried clearing SMC & PRAM multiple times now.
Am from southern India and the temperature here varies between 28 - 35. And my usage is heavy - approx. 13+hrs a day. 'Pro' is meant for heavy usage right?
And I dont usually shutdown my MBP I simply closes the lid, is that a problem? Have you guys experienced such an issue? If so, how do you overcome?
Am concerned about it, gimme ur usage patterns / tips to solve this..1 -
Is it worth buying a Macbook air 2017 now for Android development, web development and other basic stuffs?10
-
I don't have too many complaints about my MacBook Pro but once thing that makes me sad is it's battery life.4
-
Do you think is it worth buying macbook air or some other laptop for the same price? I know I can get better specs for that money but I dont game or do a lot of video editing so I Don't need a beast graphic card, I just need it for coding. What do you think?7

I was hoping it would be possible in a big international company to work (as a software developer) on my own laptop (MacBook Pro) - cause of better parameters = better performance = better efficiency. After I got hired, I was told that it is not possible to bring my own laptop. So I was given an old DELL laptop with Windows + a lot of security stuff in it from the company. The poor DELL is so slow - that even a single commit into the branch takes about 2 minutes because of the security stuff : -O ...I am soooo disappointed... :[ .... On the other hand, by working at home on my MacBook in compare with that DELL I feel about it like I work with some super ultra alien technology from the future :D what a feeling <35

What do you think about the new Touch Bar Apple introduced with their latest MacBook Pro? Please objective answers only! I am considering buying the device (after years of using windows!!)16

RIP my macbook pro.. got washed up by dear water bottle. 😭😑
Bright side: I can move to linux now, thinking about booting up ubuntu or may be arch linux. 😅😁1 -
What will you recommend to me ( for my IT studies where I code in C and Ada ) between an ultrabook with a VM Linux to use the terminal (compile/use graphics libraries) and a Macbook Pro?
(I'd like to keep Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and other app only available on windows and mac)4 -
I am in college right now and want a lightweight long-battery life laptop. Thinking of buyin MacbookPro 13inch 128gb w/o touch bar. Anu suggestions?5

Hey Guys!
Hope to find some help here. So i got a MacBook Pro (2015) from my Workplace and upgraded it to High Sierra. I set everything up and it worked fine untill i did some User configurations. I couldnt access the Settings in preferences because my password was wrong (it wasnt really, but it didnt accept it). So i thought reinstalling would help. I did the reinstall process but got an error at the end of it. “Could not create a reboot partition”. I don’t remember the message exactly. So I have tried several things and hope someone can give me a hint.
- reinstall via cmd + r -> failed
- made a time machine backup from my private MacBook (High Sierra) and put it in my work MacBook -> failed
- recovery from internet -> failed
- external drive with High Sierra installer and booting it from there -> failed
Hope you guys have a clue what to do. Thank you :).8 -
Hi guys, I need your help. Mostly those who use MacBook for development. I'm looking to buy a new laptop and was thinking of getting a MacBook. This will be my first time owning one. I always used Windows but for almost over a year now, I've been on Elementary OS. I do programming on my current laptop in Eclipse, IntelliJ and mostly, Android development in Android Studio. Also, I'm learning HTML and CSS. The battery of my current HP laptop has degraded to the point this thing only last 30 - 40mins when unplugged. Because of this, I can't do much on-the-go. Buying a new windows laptop, I know I will definitely dual boot with another Linux distro or better full boot Linux and get rid of Windows. My question is, how is programming or development on a MacBook. How's does Android studio perform? Are there anything that MacBook users wished worked better on Macs which involves Development? Please help because I can't decide and since I haven't used a MacBook as my daily driver, I'm not sure how it will affect my work writing code in there.
Thanks I'm advance for your answers. 😁4 -
That moment when somebody types on your Macbook Pro as if he was typing on a typewriter and you feel like saying 'Caveman go back to the stone age' but you can't.2

What are your thoughts on Apple's latest conference where it introduced the new iPad and updates to Mac Mini and Macbook Air?6

Curious to know what devRant thinks about a macbook air (newest model) with i5 and 8 gb ram for a developer.
Usage consists mainly of running jetbrains IDEs, like IDEA and CLion, maybe some front end using sublime text.
I know it would work now, but I'm curious if it would still be decent in, say, 2 or 3 years. Thanks!2 -
Someone else having this weird browser render issue on Mac OS El Cap? As far as I know it happens on both Opera and Chrome. (which use somewhat similar engines of course)

Hi all. Can anyone recommend me a good MacBook Pro model that’s suitable for live streaming and video editing?
I’m mostly will be doing live coding, some Youtube videos, and blogging. I really love the 2015 retina model but my friend said to get newer specs. What you guys think?4 -
Someone experience with running Ubuntu on a MacBook Pro late 2017 touch bar and all.
I don’t care about the touchbar but I just want WiFi, keyboard, mouse and battery life to be acceptable.2 -
Need help/advise: 💻 Anyone's experience with Linux on MacBooks - I've had a lot of tried, including Arch, Ubuntu, Cent and probably more I can't remember.
🔴The issue is always the Desktop manager / UI / Window manager: either it's too 👹 ugly, or too heavy(read Ubuntu default).
Want to find the ultimate compromise with reasonable support for hardware, yet with high usability.
Things like multi-touch gestures are a bonus🔥(I know there's extra bins I can install for that)
I don't mind something more to configure, but would rather stick with apt-get and similar rather than having to manually build everything 😉
As you probably understood by now - I need something close to MacOS yet Linux based 😎8 -
Planning to buy smaller laptop myself, prefer lightweight and small ones. First was looking for MacBook air but then heard about project crostini for Chromebooks. So for me that crostini seems good but I don't have any idea what Chromebook would be okeyish for development, so if anyone got any experience with crostini I would happy to take recommendations for Chromebook9

ATTN: Macbook Pro Owners
My cousin has a 2015 model and it's giving her problems, like crawling to a halt and being unresponsive kinda problems. I've already googled it and followed the advice i found then (combing the LaunchAgents and the like).
Any other tips anybody could give me?5 -
Am I only one with this? : Got new macbook, and every time it gets 100% charge immediately after unplugging it, I am checking a lot when it's coming to 99% and trying to make the battery consumption low. When it hits 99% , I tell to myself it's lost, ideal dream is over, let's use it into its full power. And typically adjust brightness, turn on things I was holding on. But it's changing with time :D Sometimes I feel like it's overheating, or too quickly discharging.4

Guys can you help me?
I want to by laptop instead of pc, but i dunno if I should go with asus zenbook ux310ux with i7 and 16GB of ram and linux or used macbook with probably i7 and 8GB of ram.
I can't make up my mind whether to choose linux or mac os. I like linux but i have a feeling that someday I will need to do something, and program for that will be windows/mac os only.
PS. Arch linux with i3wm5 -
Changed to a MacBook Pro 15 2018. I am loving the overall snappy-ness of MacOS. I am not missing Windows 10 so far. Currently I am a senior at University. Studying BSc on Computer Engineering.

I wished to buy a MBP for myself, but this new version. I am not going to need any of that fancy touchbar and all. But again the previous version is too old. Looking for other options (lenovo preferably)4

(not rant)
Hey MBP users! Is there any laptops as performant as a MacBook Pro? I wanna buy a powerful personal machine (Windows or linux) but none of them could match a MBP. Any idea?19 -
I installed arch on a 2012 MacBook pro today, that was fun, learned a lot more about Linux. Now, I don't know which DE to use.
I would use KDE, but last time I used it(recently) it reset the desktop configuration upon every boot, wiping panels and stuff. I'm sick of GNOME and Cinnamon, and XFCE is eh. Maybe i3?
Leave suggestions!1 -
Ok so I have to wait until October in order to find out if XPS 13 is still better than a Macbook Pro. I do have a Macbook Pro (mid 2010), but Dell's product is so good, comparing prices.2

No "Escape" and "Function Keys" on New Macbook Pro? Come on!!
As a Vim user, now I have to learn and adapt "ctrl+[" ASAP.
