A small cross would be better than a straight single line as the goal is to get an even amount on the *whole* surface.

Plus... Remove the stickers / thermal pad / ... from the CPU.

Make sure you bend every single pin by closing the clamp with the CPU in the wrong way.

That's an expensive mistake to make.
