1. Do you have a standard HDD installed? Macs tend to get much faster with an SSD.

2. Macs in general have become a meme. The hardware has gone down over the years and the software is overrated.

Google Chrome Helper is the culprit. It clocks in at a high CPU, memory, and disk usage. When I kill all Chrome processes, the machine is fast. Of course, Google is ignoring the problem in the Google Chrome Help Forum.
