The last year my school installed MagicBoards (whiteboard with beamer that responses to touch) in every class room and called itself "ready for the future of media". What they also got is A FUCKING LOW SPEC SERVER RUNNING DEBIAN 6 W/O ANY UPDATES SINCE 2010 WHICH IS DYING CONSTANTLY.

As I'm a nice person I asked the 65 y/o technician (who is also my physics teacher) whether I could help updating this piece of shit.

Teacher: "Naahh, we don't have root access to the server and also we'll get a new company maintaining our servers in two years. And even if we would have the root access, we can't give that to a student."

My head: "Two. Years. TWO YEARS?! ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME YOU RETARDED PIECE OF SHIT?! YOU'RE TELLING ME YOU DON'T HAVE TO INSTALL UPDATES EVEN THOUGH YOU CREATE AN SSH USER FOR EVERY FUCKING STUDENT SO THEY CAN LOGIN USING THEIR BIRTH DATE?! DID YOU EVER HEAR ABOUT SECURITY VULNERABILITIES IN YOUR LITTLE MISERABLE LIFE OR SOUNDS 'CVE-2016-5195' LIKE RANDOM LETTERS AND NUMBERS TO YOU?! BECAUSE - FUNFACT - THERE ARE TEN STUDENTS WHO ARE IN THE SUDO GROUP IF YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT IS!"

Me (because I want to keep my good grades): "Yes, that sounds alright."

    Wasn't hthere a huge bug in the shell? Just hack the shit out of it (as a project for school, with the knowledge of a teacher). Sell it to them as testing the security, so no one will put porn or sonething on it.

    Change the names of the electronics and you’ve got my situation four years ago. I turned out to pretty much become the technician for my whole last year there, and the real technician would step in to the classroom and publicly tell everyone that I had beaten him at his own job. Loved those times.

    Why do you have to be such a fucking dick? This knowledge obviously eludes him, but he's a god dam physics teacher, do you have to call him retarded and belittle him like that? Especially at schools, the network is maintained by the district and decisions on that are never in their reach unfortunately. Leave the dude alone

    My old High School is doing the same thing. We had account IDs that accessed pretty much everything the school provided us, and they were REALLY easy to find out. Then you got the lousy maintenance of the servers, and the fact that most of the school is on Win7

    @matthewp3247 this is obviously over exaggerated. If you look at our school system, every school can decide for itself what they do in the means of technology. And yes, you're right; a physics teacher doesn't have to know how to maintain a Linux server but he shouldn't call himself "the god of Linux" then.

    @Wack "school project" 😂😂
    I don't think they could pay me money because of - you know - "reasons" ;)

    @DylanG Yep. Exactly the same. All windows 7 (except for 15 PCs with XP), all logging in via smb on the Linux server. There's also a smb share called "only teachers" which has (well, you can imagine)...
